Excellent fictional account of the life of Paul the apostle

Billy Graham himself encouraged Johnny Cash to finish this book when Cash had started it and then put it aside, feeling like he could not finish it. Graham recommended Cash finish it for good reason, as it gives the reader an insight into the life of Saul, and later Paul the apostle, that you cannot possibly get from the bible itself.

Well written, this book, which was titled to be a play on words of Cash's autobiography titled Man in Black, draws you into Paul's life from a fictional 1st person perspective, and is at all times totally believable and spiritually uplifting. I highly recommend this book for Christians and non-Christians alike. Unfortunately, it is currently out of print (2/97)

Golden Years for LC-MS's Radio Missions
A wonderfully detailed and moving account of the life of Dr. Walter A. Maier, professor at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and first speaker for The Lutheran Hour. One gets an idea of the incredible faith, drive and far-sightedness of the man who oversaw the formation of KFUO Radio in radio's infancy, and the trials and triumphs of starting The Lutheran Hour during the Depression, and in the face of those who controlled much of the liberal drivel that characterized religious broadcasting of the time. This book also shows how a theologically conservative Church body embraced the latest technology of the time in Bringing Christ to the Nations. The World War II years are also covered, describing the profound effects of The Lutheran Hour's messages among laity, clergy and our Armed Forces around the world. One is amazed at the tremendous response to the broadcasts by so many, and of the huge Lutheran Hour Rallies that sprung up during the time which will, most likely, never again been seen in such magnitude. For a good overview of the "Golden Years" of Radio for the LC-MS, and for catching a passion for proclaiming the pure Gospel of Jesus Christ today, this book is a must read.

Mid-life crisis self indulgence leads to real tragedy
A disillusioned barrister attempts to recapture the idealism and passion of his youth -via entry into politics and the commencement of an extra marital affair. The novel charts his ruthless re-aninmation with a sensitive eye for the ironies of life. It is a novel that despises what it describes -but is canny enough to invite the reader to draw their own conclusions. The familiarity of marriage and its killing effect on passion are unflinchingly exposed. However, no easy answers are offered. All that is certain is that we are responsible for our own actions -that these actions have consequences is the hardest lesson of all. A book of bleak, profound truth.

Compelling, interest description of teaching on Virgin Mary
As a young man in the process of converting to Catholicism, I found "Mary: God's Yes to Man" to be a very compelling, deep, and driving study of the role of the Blessed Virgin in History, in Tradition, in the Church, and in the lives of the modern believer. I went into this book with very little knowledge of who the Church says the Virgin Mary is, and coming out of it, I feel like I could comfortably explain the doctrine to anyone. The use of Biblical exegesis, and the style of Biblical interpretation was quite interesting for this former Protestant Evangelical. The Holy Father is an excellent writer, and both Cardinal Ratzinger and von Balthasar offer interesting commentary on his writings. A good read, seeing as it took me less than 36 hours to do so.

The New Thinking Man's Guide to Pro Football

Gameplans of the Gridiron
Paul Zimmerman has an advantage over other profootball writers because of two facts. First he was a player, in college and in semipro ball; where he played on the line of scrimmage no less. And second his devotion to covering the game. There is no writer that covers football that has his historical insight into the game, and meticulous analysis of the strategy underlining it. Zimmerman, also known as Dr. Z to Sports Illustrated readers demonstrates this knowledge in his 1984 book The New Thinking Man's Guide to Pro Football. While football is often seen as a game of brutal force, and violence, beneath this are strategies and planning that make it seem more like organized chaos. Every running play to gain a few yards is planned carefully in blocking schemes, the reading of a defense by a quarterback if further appreciated when realizing the pressure put upon the man. Each position of a team is divided, and then broken down by Zimmerman. From the offensive line to the scouting department, he gives the reader a careful understanding of each section that makes up a team. While this book will appeal to the die-hards, it will also appeal to the casual fan; not only in what may be learned, but in the human element as well. There are characters throughout the book, from Conrad Dobler's maniacal play to Joe Don Looney's loony lifestyle. Zimmerman does not forget that while football is a carefully planned sport, it is also a game, and there are many characters over the years that are just that, characters. Also established is the dynamic nature of the sport to show how football is reactionary; where a style of play is established and then acted upon by opposing defenses and offenses, to create a sport that is in constant change. Unlike baseball, basketball, or hockey football is a kinetic sport that is prone to new directions and changes over time, changing in style of play due to minor details and this makes it wholly unique. No other writer has captured this than Paul Zimmerman in writing about football.

Freedom
This excellent biography of the great Paul Robeson chronicles his life as the son of a runaway slave beginning in the 1890s to his disappearance from public life in the early 1960s. This book is wonderful for reluctant readers because it is interesting AND easy to read.

The wide time span covered by Paul's life covers many of the most tumultous years in American history. This book covers many important historical and personal themes such as hypocracy of the federal government (democracy in the 1910s-1950s) and society, search for acceptance as an individual and performer, desire and struggle for social justice, and hatred and opposition to fascism.

Paul's activist stance is a wonderful example for all young readers, no matter their ethnicity. His life was lived to the fullest, and his legacy is an important one in African-American history specifically and American history generally.

This bio is a great way to introduce young readers to the strange times of McCarthyism and how these times affected individuals such as Mr. Robeson. It is also a wonderful way to introduce young and old readers to a positive role model who was actively seeking positive changes in our federal government and our global community.

Paul Robeson's life story is a great way to show readers the importance of keeping an open mind and keeping open opportunities to make new friends, despite the consequences (Paul's relationship with communist Russia).

This book is patiently awaiting attention..it deserves more.
H. B. has provided a fine read with graceful and interesting phrasing. Her descriptions are easy and vivid, and having a minimap at the start of each chapter is just plain clever..and useful. She invites us to come with her and follow Paul on his journeys; she points out events with enough space to allow the reader into the situations; she offers up without lecturing. What more could you want? No verbosity-no bombastics-but an emotionally rich telling of a fabulously interesting and crucial time and transition in human existence. The book is a brilliant rendering to match the subject she set out to cover. I liked it most of all for its loving manner corresponding to the loving communication of Paul. Highly recommended, and a book you can easily finish in a short time but may want to reread/refer back to. Not a text on the subject, however.

The Poetics of Fascism: Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, Paul De Man

Morrison's book is an interesting take on T.S. Eliot
Morrison's timely post-Marxist screed comments sagely upon a variety of contemporary critical debates. Those familiar with the polymathic cultural critic's briefer interventions will not despise this, his first sustained engagement with Modernism's embryonic (and full-blown) fascist affinities. Those who fashionably scorn and/or valorize Modernist pieties, or who rest secure in the "knowledge" that the Modernist trajectory has trailed off the cultural radar screen, will find much to raise hackles here. If, like a PoMo Pilate, you find yourself questioning Truth, but not staying for an answer, you'll really relate to the characters in this book, and you'll hate when it ends. There's some unnecessary talk about a guy called "Ideology," and frankly offensive references to a brother named "DeMan," but the true-to-life characterizations of the protagonists and visual descriptions of settings carry the reader through and make this page-turner impossible to put down. I hope Morrison keeps up writing like this, and I will recommend this book to all my co-workers.

Highly Recommended
Enter the hearts of a man and a woman, newly married and swallowed like a drunken night on Bourbon Street in the dangerous criminal world of New Orleans. Ruffin's power lies in his ability to use incredible imagery entwined with an amazing storytelling ability to hook his reader and slowly unwind the tale to its dramatic finish. You will be hooked, and you will not be disappointed.

I had the fortune of hearing Ruffin speak live in his hometown of Columbus, MS during a book reading and interviewing him for a newspaper story. His skill live convinced me to read his written work. He is an incredibly talented writer I grow to increasingly appreciate the more I read.

Absolutely a "must have" book for every Elvis fan
This book is one of the most impressive Elvis books I have ever read. Over the years, like countless other Elvis fans, I have owned or read dozens of books about the King. So, by now, readers would think they have read most of what is known about him. Wrong. This book is loaded with stories and facts that I have not seen elsewhere. In fact, even Peter Guralnick's books (ie: "Last Train..". "Careless Love"), do not have some of the information that is contained in this book. For instance, I didn't know that Elvis and his father were going to testify in a FBI case involving them being scammed out of $950,000 (over the purchase of the Jetstar airplane Elvis bought). The author points out that this can be found in public FBI files. Yet no other book has every mentioned it. I could go on and on. There are highlighted pages devoted to Elvis concerning race, girls he was involved with, an untold story that occured when he was 16, etc. The chapters are broken up into segments: his life, his music, influences, people who influenced him, his essential albums, essential songs, etc. I strongly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed. It is among the top three books I have ever read on Elvis. Absolutely essential.
