Wake-up call for industry!
Authors Curtis Moore and Alan Miller provide a wake-up call for industrialists who have yet to respond to the rise in the number of new markets for environmental technologies. Geared to inspire and catalyze U.S. entrepreneurs, the book offers insight to any business interested in the growing market. Environmental technologies range from consumer to industrial products. The authors write that: "Two of the largest markets are for machines which consume the vast majority of the world's energy and generate most of its pollution as well: motor vehicles and electric power plants." Increasingly stringent vehicular emissions testing, such as in Mexico, create a market for new products. Writing about Japan's investment in air quality improvement in Mexico City, the authors conclude that altruism alone is not a sufficient explanation. "The benefit to Japan is access to enormous markets for pollution control equipment," the authors write, pointing to $246 million which Japan budgeted in 1993 for its international energy programs. The authors are well-regarded in the public policy arena. Moore served as counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works. Miller currently is the director of the Maryland-based Center for Global Change. Numerous illustrations of successful business practices help guide the reader to understanding the forces at work. AT &T, for example, foresaw the approaching worldwide ban on CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) and developed its own substitutes for ozone-destroying chemicals. Environmental protection can be beneficial to the economy. Nations which have spearheaded their own environmental safeguards now have the technologies to sell abroad. Green Gold provides the framework for understanding how countries and businesses can work together to protect both the environment and the economy.

A Radical Green Political Theory (Routledge Innovations in Political Theory, 1)

A very important, overdue subject that is well covered
I found Mr. Carter's subject extremely interesting and overdue.

His research appears thorough and his arguments very convincing without appearing patronizing or annoying in a 'tree hugging - hippie greeny' way. On the contrary, I found his style very level headed and convincing even to a cynic of the green movement.

My only problem with the style is that, as a lay person, I found the technical and political aspects a bit hard to get my head around at times. However, working too many night shifts was probably the reason for that.

My thanks to Mr. Carter for this important work!

PS Please publish a cheaper soft cover version so more can afford and read it.

literate but disturbing
I read this right after I finished The Distant Lands, inspired to read both books by news of the author's deaath in Paris on August 13. So I have read some 1500 pages of Green since he died. Some of the things in this book were annoying, but if one looks at the whole as painting a picture I believe one can see a reason for the sometimes tedious detail. His characters sure do a lot of kissing, and apparently the central character and her husband were more uxorious than the usual fictional characters, which is saying quite a bit.

Basic botany text.
This is a short book on plant diversity. There are lots of B/W drawings and diagrams. The book can be used in botany classes or for amateurs who want to learn more about plants.

Great upper-level book, but not for an intro course
I was needing a book for an introductory botany course, covering plant evolution and structure. This book is too advanced for a course like that, but would be excellent for a 300 or 400 level course after students have the basics of evolution, taxonomy, and plant structures down. As a grad student, this is a text I'd love to have as a resource and will use as a reference text in my course...but it's too dry and the language is at too high a level for beginners. I am recommending this text to a professor of a botany class I was TA'ing for on Comparative Plant Anatomy, a 300 level course. So...if you want to be a botanist, grab it. If you want to teach plant anatomy and origins after an introductory botany course, this is perfect (best I've seen for the price, too!). If you want to teach an AP Botany course to high school students that only have a high-school biology background with no botany experience....not a good choice except as a strong reference. Book explains well, has excellent black-and-white diagrams, follows a thorough and logical pattern of evolution, but simply uses terminology too advanced for a lower-level course. They have trouble with the concepts of transcription and translation, much less page 103, "The passage of materials into the sporophyte is entirely through the apoplast since in all archeoniates the boundary between the two phases lacks plasmodesmata." Clear to me....but not to a beginner. I can't stress how good this book is for an advanced course or a serious botanist/taxonomist/plant geneticist/etc. GREAT upper-level/professional text!!!!!

A good intro for Spanish
We want to teach our daughter different languages, and this book is helping. It allows us to read to her and she can pick up on the words and sounds of a different language. Easy to read if you've had some experience reading Spanish. If it's been awhile, you may struggle at first, but keep going, it gets easier and your kids will pick up on the words.

Trashing Reality
The authors certainly make a big deal about presenting the "little known" FACTS about environmental groups that will supposedly support their premise that these groups are out to "trash the economy." First of all, this requires the premise that there is no financial value to the environment, no financial value to clean air and water. No where in this book do the authors present facts of actual & SUSTAINING damages to the economy resulting from these groups, except for the notorious case of the alar scare and the dolpin tactics used to control huge, out-of-control nets. They lump legitimate tactics with the fringe radical groups, painting all environmentalists with the same brush. They are very righteous about foot-noting their sources, most of who are malcontents, or who have their own hidden adgenda for which another book could be written. The authors continue to malign the groups for being "rich", large , and interconnected - SO WHAT! They operate just like big businesses, as they should. One example of many unsupported contentions is that the Nature Conservancy's buying of three islands off the coast of Virginia robbed the economy of thousands of jobs!! The authors failed to present facts to support that statement! They fail to include the dollars generated by eco-tourism, one of the fastest growing segments of our economy. I guess these guys would like to see bridges to the galapogas islands. What a one-sided rip!

Opinionated
It seems the authors of this book are writing by opinion and backing their opinions up with facts they find to make them sound right. I don't argue the fact that some Environmental groups can become overzealous in their cause and forget what their goal is BUT... what about the people like the average farmer who has been practicing conservation efforts from the begining. They till the earth, plant a crop, fertilize the crop with animal bi-products, reap the harvest, feed themselves and the animals, over and over, etc... Most people today have no idea what it takes to grow food for themselves, their families and/or their animals. All most people know is that they go to the store and their is food. Centuries ago, people grew their food and raised their animals and fed themselves. With the newest technology, we all WANT WANT WANT. What do you think all of this WANT does??? It causes the supply and demand curves of general economics to be put into motion. People need these high paying jobs just to live because we have caused the cost of living to rise so far that we cannot survive on the means of a famer, or simple laborer. We've caused this economic destruction ourselves by simple WANT and not NEED. So who do we blame??? Ask the authors and you'll hear what was written in the book, Environmentalists. Heaven forbid we blame ourselves.

Ask a child today where beef comes from. You'll probably hear "the grocery store". It is this false sense of nature and naturalism that "most" environmentalists are striving to help people recognize. People will not open there eyes to see the fact that each of us has an impact on the earth and people who sit back and say go ahead; drive your old clunky cars; drill oil; pollute the air, we won't be around to see the destruction it causes. They choose to live for themselves. The gift from God that we were all born with was free will. What we choose to do with it is determined by the individual. People gather into many groups to consolidate their efforts to use their free will. In almost every type of group, we see the end result of arguments over who is right and who is wrong.

The Painful Truth
In "Trashing the Planet", Arnold and Gottlieb pull the curtain back on the current environmental movement. They show that the policies and beliefs of most of the mainstream environmental groups would shock most of the "average" environmentalists. Being Green feels good, but cannot be intellectully supported by the new-luddites of today. Arnold and Gottlieb deliver a well reasoned, logical, expose of the movement.

Outdated, Outdated, Outdated!!!
Don't let the book's publication date fool you... the information in this book is outdated from 1998-99. The listings include schools by old/outdated names, had outdated contact information (to the college PR offices in many cases, not even coaches for the sport, I might add), and has sports that have long ago been dropped from intercollegiate competition to "club" status. With the changes in the college sports scene brought on by the gender equity rules, the men's sports programs listed in this book include more sports than are actually at most colleges. Conversely, the women's sports programs listed here show fewer programs than are now available. This book is outdated terribly. Purchasing it at this time would be a total waste of money for anyone trying to find current athletic scholarship information.

Don't be fooled by the title
The title of this book would lead one to believe that there was actual information on scholarships in this book. The reality is that this book is not much more than an alphabetical listing of schools and their sports. The high school counselor's office has this info for free. I found this book to be useless and feel cheated having bought it. It is so general (and I use the term loosely) and simplistic, it's almost laughable. If I could return it I would. IT WAS A WASTE OF MONEY.

reader from Jersey
I'm a sophomore in a community college and I read this book to help me get into a good 4 year college next year. I play a sport and I found this book to be the best one I have read so far! Not only does this help with the recruiting process, but it has $400M worth of Athletic Scholarships! I highly recommend this for any high schooler looking to play sports in college and for students wishing to transfer and participate in athletics.

This non-novel is an obvious attempt at marketing consultancy services. Real people are not like that, and real companies are not like that.
