Concise text with high quality pictures.
I bought this pocket book atlas when I was a junior medical student 3 years ago in a Book Exhibition. It has joined my "illustrative books collection" since that time. Illustrations explain better than texts, and you tend to remember the diseases quickly.

Features of this pocket book include:

- It covers wide range of infectious diseases compared to its size.

- User-friendly format.

- The text is on the left side of the page, where each disease is dealth with according to its etiology, incidence, pathogenesis, clinical features, complications, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

- High-quality color clinical pictures on the right side of the page. These pictures include microscopic (histopathology) pictures, macroscopic specimens, electron microscopy, imaging (e.g. x-rays, CT), diagrams (e.g. hepatitis antigens), and clinical bed-side pictures.

- Contents include:
Classical infectious diseases of childhood [Measles, Rubella, Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), Mumps, Erythema infectiousum, and Chickenpox], Herpez zoster (shingles), Herpez simplex infections, Kawasaki (mucucutaneous lymph node) syndrome, Lyme disease, Orf, Herpangina, Hand foot and mouth disease, Infectious mononucleosis, Toxoplasmosis, Cytomegalovirus, Viral hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Staphyloccocal infection, Osteomyelitis, Infections with Streptococcus pyogenes, Scarlet fever, Anthrax, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Enteric (Typhoid and paratyphoid) fevers, Infantile gastroenteritis, Pseudomembranous colitis, Meningococcal infections, Bacterial meningitis (non-meningococcal), Viral meningitis, Tuberculosis, Pertussis, Acute croup and bronchiolitis, Community-acquired pneumonia, Legionnaire's disease, Lung abscess, Erythema nodosum, Stevens-Jonson syndrome, Antibiotic rashes, Syphilis, Gonococcaemia, Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), and Index.

- It can be used for quick revision among medical students as well as residents.

- This pocket book is in its 2nd edition (1999), published by Churchill Livingstone company, and comes in 125 pages.

All in all, this pocket book is recommended for high-yield revision.

A Must Read
When I first heard this book, I was brought to tears. I had to have it. You do too. This book does an excellent job of explaining Jim Crowe to young children. It is a must read during Black History month. All teachers should keep a copy for your library. It should be read it again and again.

Great Teaching Tool!
This book is well written, beautifully illustrated, and thought provoking. I use it to teach about equal rights and letter writing to 3rd-6th graders. Check it out!

Undiscovered Chekhov: Forty-Three New Stories
Published in Digital by SevenStories Press ()
Authors: Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, Spalding Gray, and Peter Constantine
Amazon base price: $12.00
Average review score:

A "must" for Chekov fans & Russian literature students.
The Undiscovered Chekhov is a compilation of superbly crafted short stories by the Russian literary master writer Anton Chekhov (1860-1904), drawn from his work in the 1880s when he was a young man in his twenties. These witty and original short stories are very ably translated for an American readership by Peter Constantine, who discovered these literary gems in the New York Public Library while browsing through old magazines in the Slavic and Baltic division. The Undiscovered Chekhov is a "must" for Chekhov enthusiasts and an essential, core addition to all academic and public library Russian literature collections.

Pure delight - early Chekhov as enjoyable as later
The only elements holding these 43 pieces together are (a) they are short and (b) they are earlier works of Chekhov. They include character sketches, experimental literature, humor, groups of aphorisms ... all done with great wit and excellent writing. The translation is very readable; there is no sense of reading foreign syntax.

Examples of pieces in the book: "First Aid" is a short story in which the inepitude of the civil service/nobility kills a drunk "drowning" victim through folk medicine (tossing on a rug) and vague "CPR" instructions.

"From the Diary of an Assistant Bookkeeper" is a tale of perpetual hope of promotion based on the demise of the current bookkeeper given in the form of a diary.

"Questions Posed by a Mad Mathematician" presents the worst fears for a mathmatics test. Example: "I was chased by 30 dogs, 7 of which were white, 8 gray, and the rest black. Which of my legs was bitten, the right or the left?"

"Confession - or Olya, Zhenya, Zoya: A Letter" is a bachelor's explanation of why he has never married - the disasters (from hiccups up) that have foiled each proposal.

The remaining pieces are as diverse and entertaining. The pieces are the best of over 400 short pieces available from the early period. Even if you don't generally read Russian literature you will enjoy these pieces.

Arranging Roses

Authors: Emma Gray and Peter McHoy
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Great book that you'll use again and again! Great for brides
The book is perfect for the home designer, or whoever is interested in making rose arrangments. I love my copy because I live in San Diego, CA where I have roses all year round and always like to find soemthing to do with them. If you are a bride or know someone who is going to ne, this book has everything you need: party-table-edge swag, centerpiece arrangments, heart-shaped wreaths, wreaths for around candles, bridal bouquet, victorian bridal posey, bridesmaids posey, bridesmaid head crown and bride head crown, and bridesmaids baskets. There are also corsages, the popular rose tree sculptures and much more. One of the great ideas was for a centerpiece that goes around, say a nice tub of ice with champagne or etc. This is great for decorating any event. The only thing that would have made this book alot better is if the editor had included window treatments. The pictures are good, and the directions are clear. It's simple to follow and fun. This is a book you'll get use out of time and time again!

Gray Ghosts: U.S. Navy and Marine Corps F4 Phantoms
Published in Hardcover by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (01 February, 2000)
Author: Peter E. Davies
Amazon base price: $49.95

A Fascinating Read
The entire focus of this book is the personal experiences of flight crews who flew the Phantom. I find it a refreshing break from the typical aviation book laden with boring and dry technical jargon. The personal anecdotes of how this awesome aircraft started out as a fleet defense fighter and was eventually used as almost everything else is much more interesting.

Gray's Anatomy: The Anatomical Basis of Medicine & Surgery

An infinite book for "finite" science?
A book you can still dream on.

This was written and rewritten when Victorian erudition was in the making. Some authors in the long series of its well parsed institutional writing would still like to see it continuing in THAT well established tradition.

Alas, the times have changed. Recent anatomy texts are dwarfs not even climbing on the shoulders of the likes of Gray, Braus and Testut. Those authors professed ideals of "seeing through the skin structures", "synmorphy" and "mentally reconstructing the living". Today we do all this with machines...

I stopped reading the huge text linearly at the complicated review of angiogenesis, but still browse dedicated chapters for standard, if somewhat elaborate descriptions. Comprehensive knowledge parsing seems to have lived a fruitful life and then exit the scene to enrich scientific obituaries. But if Gibbon were still an example of style, the fifth star would be added when that clarity, in my view mandatory for monuments, will be eventually reached.

Excellent reference!!
This book is absolutely amazing. It was the required reference text for a gross anatomy class I took in graduate school and it made studying so easy! I used to go through and take notes out of it in order to have a solid base of what I should see when I would dissect. This book also described a lot of the abnormalities and variations that we would regularly see in the human body. A MUST HAVE FOR ANYONE WHO WILL BE STUDYING ANATOMY!!!!!!

A cogent description of the human body.
This book is truly a masterpiece. The writing and layout is good. Descriptions and illustrations are clear and well done. I am not a medical professional and yet I find this book fascinating in its breadth and scope. To better comprehend some of the anatomical structures I first read relevant portions of this book and then go to Netter's Atlas Of Human Anatomy. One point of caution though - get the 38th British Edition. This is by far superior to the American Edition which costs half as much. The extra money spent will be well worth it. After all there is a lifetime of adventure embedded in this volume.

Psychology
Published in Hardcover by W H Freeman & Co. (1999)
Author: Peter O. Gray
Amazon base price: $85.95
Average review score:

great
I thought this text was great--it provides information in a very clear and well-explained manner for the student who has never taken a psychology course before. Gray proves he has a sense of humor as well, injecting funny lines every now and then. It provides a lot of pertinent information in an interesting manner, and covers everything from theories on development and society to cognition and neuroscience. After finishing my intro psych class I even found myself wishing I could still use the text for my other classes (in fact I still refer to it every now and then).

Best Psychology Textbook
As an Intro Psych instructor, I reviewed dozens of psychology texts. Gray's "Psychology" is clearly the best.

First, because it is written by a single author, it maintains a consistent style and viewpoint throughout--that is, the application of evolutionary biology and cognitive science to the study of the mind and behavior. Consequently, he does not shy away from putting forward strong arguments where they are needed. On this, see especially his superb discussion of the fall of behaviorism and the rise of cognitivism.

Second, the author has a powerful command of several lines of important research, and he uses this to "smarten up" the text to make it *more* understandable. As an example, see particularly his discussions of the heritability of intelligence.

Third, the text is beautifully organized.

The text does, however, suffer from two small weaknesses: the discussion of self-esteem owes too much to James, with James' errors especially, and the discussion of mental health and happiness needlessly bore little imprint from the chapters on cognition.

Still, Gray produced a superlative volume.

A Great Book
If truth be told, I do not even like psychology, and feel contemt of some sort for it.I took it this semester to fulfill my humanity requirement.Nevertheless, I cannot deny that this book is wonderfully written, and it was a true pleasure reading it ! Peter Gray is obviously very fond of psychology, as well as of teaching it.It was much fun reading a book written so sensitively and with so much enthusiasm. I know many universities assign this book and am therefore surprised only one person reviewed it so far.
