Formula medical thriller.
Not my usual type of book, but my mom thought I'd like it so I borrowed it from her. A new doctor at a psych bospital becomes involved in something dangerous when he discovers forbidden experiments being performed on human patients, and with another doctor (read: love interest) decides to do some investigating of his own. "Kindling" is a method of electrically burning out criminal tendencies in the human brain, but sometimes it has the opposite effect. Two of the patients, one a serial killer and rapist, the other a once relatively harmless pervert, are somehow freed and embark on a killing spree that culminates in a painfully drawn out showdown in the mountains.

I have to admit, the hero's (and apparently, the author's) pro-animal research stance (he calls animal rights activists "nuts") put a bad taste in my mouth early on, but it still doesn't affect my opinion of the book as a whole. It just isn't very well written and the story isn't new or even exciting. It seemed like something Hollywood would spew out into the multiplex with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in the leads. I know I'm not very experienced in the med thriller genre as far as literature goes, but there's got to be better work out there than this.

Do I agree with the 1st reviewer...
NOT AT ALL. I found this book to stimulate my brain waves as it proceeded to enlighten me to the possiblity of "brain-tampering" to alter criminal behaviour. Though (I hope) this book is border-line science fiction , I fear that its future possibilty might in fact exist. It is both fast-paced and suspenseful. It is also somehat graphic..if you are "squeamish", I would suggest you forget the book, get a plate of cookies, a glass of milk and retire to bed early. But, as for me, I found it to be time well spent.

Barron's "How to Prepare for the GED" (Fail's quality Test)
Having just completed the GED testing in Santa Clara County, CA, I wanted to take a moment to share some observations I made while using "Barron's, How to Prepare for the GED" (11th Edition). While I did find the guide helpful, I also found a highly disturbing number of errors. Most of the errors I'm referring to go far beyond common typographical or publication errors. Considering the purpose of the publication, I expected quality but found a total lack of it.

Of particular concern, is the math section. The cover of the guide advertises "Extensively revised and updated," and "All new math review." However, is where I found the greatest number of flagrant errors.

I don't know if primary responsibility for these errors rests with the author(s), editor(s), or publisher, but I'm certain most everyone will agree that the quality of educational materials of this nature is everyone's concern.

I have sent a sample of the errors I encountered to the publisher for review. I have also forwarded a copy to the Board of Education in California. Based on the number of (obvious) errors I encountered, I think it safe to assume the actual number of errors, in this particular publication, goes far beyond the 50 "+" question and answer errors I documented.

Barron's GED
I bought this book because I have had so many positive experiences with other Barron's series. I will be taking a general math/English exam as a part of an application process to work at my children's school. I wanted to review various subject areas that I thought mught be covered on the exam, and so I picked up Barron's GED and CBEST books. I am still making my way through the GED book, and haven't yet started on the CBEST.

I am almost through with the math portion of the GED book, and I am so angry. By the time I realized how many errors were in almost every micro-section of the math review, I had already thrown away my receipt. This book is unbelievable. Granted, the portions that are written accurately are thoughtful and mostly easy to follow, but the amount of errors (3 errors on one of the math pages) are incomprehensible. How did this happen? Error after error after error.....I think you get the picture. I am now on page 522, where the "ANSWERS" portion of a chapter review test lists the answer to problem #6 as choice "7." Well, hello, but the choices only number from 1-5. Choice Number 7 doesn't exist!

Barron's wasted my time and my money on this one. The discussion portions are extremely helpful, but need to be backed up with consistantly accurate math problems and answers. If Barron's can go back and fix these errors (and maybe offer the poor saps who bought this version an unconditional money-back return policy, with or without receipt in hand), this would actually be a great book.

These editors cannot calculate!
The book is pretty good except of the chapter maths. Maths is lousy. There are more than a dozen real terrible mistakes! I've never seen before a book with so many mistakes.

The Eye of Klemantaski
Published in Paperback by Klemantaski Collection (1993)
Authors: Louis Klemantaski, Peter G. Sachs, and Charles W. Queener
Amazon base price: $17.00
Average review score:

Thin volume disappoints, doesn't match description
Disappointing. In reality this "book" is little more than a catalog for the large Klemantaski collection of photos. Not only is it a very thin volume, but it's small too - only about 5"x7". The selection of pictures is very good and the reproduction is better than average. Text is minimal, with only a 1- or 2-sentence caption per picture. It's really too bad, because Klem's body of work is generally outstanding.

The Man in the Iron Mask
Published in Hardcover by Carcanet Press Ltd (1986)
Author: Peter Hoyle
Amazon base price: $18.50
Used price: $3.98
Collectible price: $7.14
Average review score:

A modern novel that toys with pointlessness.
This novel is set in vaguely modern Britain (the precise date would be a spoiler) and deals with a charater who discovers that his upstairs neighbor believes himself to be the Man in the Iron Mask, both of history and of Dumas' novel. The action follows the character's increasing involvement in and frequent resistence to this madman's fantasy world. Likewise the character is drawn into the madman's family life. Without getting specific, the novel is about the "cantagiousness" of madness. This is a serious issue, but this is a modern novel and is mainly interested in the question for "effect" and not in any philosophical way. It is well-written, and those who want no more from a novel than literary in-jokes and surreal effects should find it thoroughly satisfactory. For my tastes (and I do like the surrealism of Borges and Kafka, for example) the book did not seem to be about real people; nor had it anything interesting to say about Dumas; nor anything interesting to say about the historical Iron Mask. I came away from this book feeling that it had been a pointless exercise.
