A Great sequel to the beloved Veronica and her friends
In this book, told from Peter's point of view, Sachs really establishes the characters. It's about Peter who makes friends with Veronica who is an aggressive yet awkward tomboy who is shy around Peter's other friends and they dislike her because of her reputation as the former school bully. Peter's mom, who is a goofy, shallow woman if you ask me, dislikes Veronica and wants to terminate the friendship and Peter argues with her for months, and he wants to invite her to his special party but his mom refuses to let Veronica come, so he is going to keep fighting until she says yes. This book is full of surprises and very enjoyable. You might find some parts to sort of drag on, as I did when I first read it when I was 10, but they become more interesting upon second and third time reading it. This book will challenge you to consider what you look for and value in a friend. Read it!

A tribute to an unsung hero
The holocaust was a historical event beyond comprehension, not only because it was the largest planned genocide in recorded history. After reading the historical studies dealing with the holocaust, one must arrive at a very disturbing, pessimistic, and hopeless conclusion about humanity: If the whole world actively participated with the Nazis in the execution of the "final solution" for the Jews, the Nazis could not have done a better jon than what they did. The main event that stopped the extermination of the Jews was the military victory over Germany and its allies (Hungary, Rumania, etc). But this was a byproduct of the war, not a mission. With few exceptions (one such exception is the topic of SHAKE HEAVEN AND HELL), Great Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union not only refused to consider any plan to save the doomed Jews, but they did their best to hinder efforts of rescue. This included not only the leaders of the Allies during the war such as Franklin Roosevelt and the State Department, Winston Churchill and the Foreign Office, and the Soviet leaders, but also most of the Zionist-socialist Jewish leaders in the U.S. such as Stephen wise and Nahum Goldman. Louis Rapoport made a major contribution in SHAKE HEAVEN AND HELL, which is a tribute to an unsung hero, Hiller Kook (alias Peter Bergson). With a small band of young Palestinian Jews (loosely affiliated with the Irgun) Bergson managed to enlist the support of wide segments of the American public to put pressure on Roosevelt to do something about the Nazi massacres. This included congressmen, senators, various organizations, writers, and others. Some of the above individuals were household names in the 1940's such as Ben Hecht, Guy Gillette, Randolph Hearst, LaGuardia, Herbert Hoover, and Will Rogers Jr. Their public relations campaigns finally pair off in early 1944 (too little, too late) with the creation of the War Refugee Board which has been credited with the saving of approximately 200,000 Jews from the German ovens. Much of the above activities of Bergson and his group have been described in several books, such as David Wyman's THE ABANDONMENT OF THE JEWS, and in David Morrison's HEROES, UNTIHEROES AND THE HOLOCAUST. The unique contribution of Rapoport is that SHAKE HEAVEN AND HELL presents a chronological account of Peter Bergson activities, and the humiliations that he and his friends had to endure, mainly from the "recognized" Jewish leaders of the time such as Stephen Wise, Nahum Goldman, and Abba Silver. These individuals, in cohorts with Chaim Weizmann, Ben Gurion, Moshe shertok and other fanatical labor Zionists did everything they could to discredit Bergson and his activities due to their timidity and ghetto mentality. During the darkest period in human history, when most of the world collaborated in the torture and murder of six million innocent people, Peter Bergson and those who helped him should stand out as reminders that leaders and governments are not to be trusted. Unfortunately, this has not happened yet, and Rapoport laments on the overwhelming acceptance of Roosevelt, Wise, Weizmann, and others as historical heroes, while the historical research has shown that they were Nazi collaborators. We can add to this list Ben Gurion, shertok, Golda Meyerson, and their heirs. It is disheartening that despite more than half a century of major revelations about the holocaust, such as the Kastner Affair in the l950's (see Ben Hecht's PERFIDY), Eichmann's trial in 1960, and numerous books exposing the labor Zionists and their supporters' shameful betrayal of the European Jews, they are still considered as respected leaders. Roosevelt has been worshiped as a God, and Ben Gurion's heirs have been elected as leaders of Israel for almost 40 years, leading this country to one disaster after another. The six million murdered Jews did not simply end up as fertilizers in German fields. they are ghosts who will exact their revenge on man, as long as he persists in worshipping leaders and governments who have always turned against him in times of need.

Another great book from the gifted P.J. Gomes
Suberb! I especially like his sermon on Mary, the Mother of God. I'm a Roman Catholic and lately have lost interest in Mary to some extent, probably due to the cultic practices of Roman Catholicism. It took the insightful Peter Gomes to give me a better understanding and appreciation of Mary's blessedness in her response to God. Thank you. This is a great book for reflection and meditation.

Is your preacher putting you to sleep?
Peter Gomes has earned a reputation as one of America's finest preachers, and this book -- a collection of 40 of his sermons, many of them delivered first to the Harvard College Memorial Church -- proves that his reputation is well earned. A sense of peace and grace will overtake you as you are seduced by his words.

Reading "Beyond Tragedy" I was reminded of the powerful imagery associated with Palm Sunday; reading "When Life Begins" I was comforted by the reminder that Christianity tells us not to fear death; reading "Getting to Yes," I was reminded of the spiritual emphasis placed on changing one's mind. The language Gomes uses is poetic and simple; the ideas he expresses are brilliant musings on the true meaning of many Bible stories.

Above all, it is Gomes's understanding of the Bible, his ability to makes sense of its sometimes inscrutable stories, that makes him such an effective preacher. I can't say I've ever heard a sermon in the variety of churches I've attended that has illuminated Christianity in the way this book does.

They are amongst the greatest users of language¿
The tragedy is most of what they "write" is never written down, it is delivered orally, the great news is that one of the best has written 40 of his, and created "Sermons". Mr. Peter J. Gomes has collected this group of his sermons, and now people outside of his place of speaking may enjoy the words of this great communicator.

I am not suggesting this book because a member of the clergy has written it; religion is an individual and very personal choice. I enjoyed this book as I feel some of the greatest users of our language speak rather than write, or rather speak but with no written record, and this is truly a loss. Whether or not the religious denomination of which Mr. Gomes is a member that you have adopted as your own, is not the reason to read this work. An appreciation of language is all that is required.

Mr. Gomes is considered to be one of the finest "Preachers" speaking today. I have never heard him speak, but if his written words are any indication of his live presentations, they must be special indeed. If you have never had the experience of being amongst those present to hear one of these orators you have not enjoyed a singular experience.

I have had the privilege of enjoying some sermons delivered in tiny churches, in parts of our Country where I was the minority, and a "Yankee" in a good-natured way. I attended what I had been raised to refer to as Church in buildings that were anything but conventional Churches. I was not in massive structures, in one case it was an old converted fire station, in another a school. But the "Preachers" I heard were remarkable, and while they most certainly are in the profession of spreading The Message as their denomination practices it, they are unique purveyors of the spoken, and in this case the written word.

The speeches of Mr. Gomes are excellent reading, and regardless of your faith or lack thereof, you will find more common sense ideas, and more useful information than you will find in a dozen self-help books, be they personal or business. All of these books I refer to can be accurately described as how to conduct yourself as an employer, a manager, a person. None of these books hold any great mysteries; none hold a thought that is not derivative. Being happy with your life, running a company that retains employees because they have no desire to move, being a positive contributor in any manner you choose, all these manners of personal conduct are known to us all, placing them in books that give them new names is just repackaging, it's not new. Want to keep employees, guess what, treat them well. Want to be a better person, listen more, the hundreds of books on how to behave are presentations of what in many cases you already know.

I doubt that Mr. Gomes sets out to create anything more than people who are more cognizant and sensitive to those around them. But then that describes just about every self-help book, personal or professional I have read.

Great reading from a brilliant orator.

Great 2nd Edition Update
This is a great book to introduce business people to information architecture, for architects to reinforce their skills, and for web designers to principles to apply to site design. The second edition has more information and is more in depth than the first, and is well worth purchasing.

The first three chapters of the book explore what information architecture is and what it is needed. Chapters 4 - 9, the "Basic Principles of Information Architecture" have the most substance. Several chapters bear reading several times, including:

Chapter 5: Organization Systems, Chapter 7: Navigation Systems, Chapter 8: Search Systems and Chapter 9: Thesauri, Controlled Vocabularies, and Metadata

The sections on Process and Methodologyactice, and Organizational fit are all good for people learning about IA, but may be too basic for anyone that does a lot of work or reading in the field. The Education Chapter is already out of date, which is to be expected.

IA for the World Wide Web is a great book, worth reading and worth hanging onto for reference or to use to explain the IA to others.

An Outstanding Book
This book is perfect for those involved in research, strategy, design and implementation of corporate portals, intranets, CM/DM, and metadata projects. An exciting time in this field; Rosenfeld and Morville have performed a service for practitioners by packaging their knowledge, experience and perspective into this well-written book. The authors help one to realize how recently the role of information architect has become a professional role. For IA's, this book will help you effectively articulate your perspective throughout the organization; it's worth the price for that advantage alone.

That's one sharp Polar Bear!
This book is now in it's second edition, and the update is well worth the $20 investment. The authors give the best all around introduction to the subject that I have seen. What I like about their approach is that they don't claim to have all the answers and they seem to understand that this is a field that is in evolotion. What's great about the book is that it's in plain English and is aimed at programmers and graphic designers who don't have a degree in library science. What I enjoyed most about the book is that there is quite a bit of good common sense. Not only would I recommend this book to someone starting in the field, but I would also say that if you are an old timer it's a worthwhile read to get a better taste of what best industry practices are these days. While the book has some illustrated examples, it manages not to be a pretty picture book which tells you what you already know.

Fast moving story with a lot of great characters. I'm not normally a cop book reader but this was recommended by a freind and I really enjoyed it. Would make a great action movie!

A Fun Cop Story
I really enjoyed the book. The story was fast paced and the characters were interesting. I've read a lot of police stories, but this one was really unique and hilarious. I liked the main characters to much that I'm hoping there will be a sequel!

An excellent text, even for inquisitive Paramedics!
The book comes in 3 hardback volumes, well worth the price. I am a practicing Paramedic with a desire to know more about the how's and why's of patient care. The book is well organized, with a reading level of college sophomore. The section on resucitation takes ACLS just a little bit further. I consider this book recommended reading for Paramedics who want to stay on top

Encounter all Kahn's master pieces.
In one book, you can see through Kahn's famous works, like Salk Institute of Biography Reaserch and Yale Center for British Art. Nice photos and descriptions. This book can be the beginning step for approaching Kahn's philosophy of architecture. He say, "Existence will determines the every nature of things". He used the simple forms to establish a fine-art-class architecture style. Kahn's works could be said as "Simple in FORM, but not simple in MIND."

A great overview of Kahn's career.
A beautiful book...It's filled with so much information about Kahn's major projects. Interesting, well-written text and dozens of sketches and model photos accompany each major project. I'd never heard of Grant Mudford, but his big, color photos are beautiful. There's a list of all of Kahn's projects and buildings from the 1920s until his death in 1974, and a section of Kahn's travel sketches and artwork. The pages are large, the print quality is impressive, and the impeccable graphic design, by Massimo Vignelli with Abigail Sturges, suits Kahn's style perfectly. And it's a good buy, too.

German backbone defense machine in a mini publication format
I am really impressed by the mini coverage of this assault gun given in this tiny book. The text is clear, many data are provide, all the pictures are described and support written information. The graphic cutaways and the drawing reinforce the well-balanced text/images conception of the New Vanguard series.

The real lack of all the Osprey book is the source. Nearly all the books edited by Osprey are lacking the bibliography and Index. Most of the books are from renowned historian with many years of background research, but they end-up with no source to validate their works.

I had to go with the more complete book Sturmgeschutz & Its Variants (Spielberger German Armor & Military Vehicles Series, Vol 2) from Schiffer publishing to ascertain the trueness of the facts imply in this Osprey book.

Typical INtroductory Study
The Vanguard series is intended to give a brief introducton to various weapons systems used in the major wars of the 20th century. As such, they include color plates of various paint schemes on campaign, a sectional drawing of a representative vehicle, and plenty of B&W photos in the text. All this is wrapped in an elementary text based on new research in newly opened archives and presented in an attractive format. Useful to war gamers, students, and model makers.

Excellent ideas on IA
This is another example of a book I wished I'd known about a year or so ago. I'm an amateur web designer and up until just recently maintained web sites for three different volunteer groups. Now one of them has decided to get another person to run the site. If I'd known about the concepts presented in this book, I might still be running it! The book discusses how to organize the content on a wbe site and covers a lot of areas the average site designer might not consider on first glance. There's nothing more frustrating than being in the "middle" of a site and "getting lost" with no way out other than to start over. While this is an extreme example, too many sites suffer from navigational problems.

This book offers choices on how to organize the information on your site, various ways to design it, the types of systems you can use to search for specific data on the site, researching and planning it (with a great outline on what you should include in your research), and the business of creating and maintaining your design. The book's authors stress the importance of keeping everyone in the process involved in it at all times, as well as pointing out that just because you finally finished it does not mean your job is over! There's always the job of keeping the site as current as possible.

Anyone responsible for maintaining a site (even if it's just your own) should take a look through this book.

At last! A concise, practical guide to web site design!
I had been looking around for a book like this for some time now: one that guides me through the crucial conceptual design phase of web site development. Most books on web site design are really about user interface design. This book offers a top-down planning approach to getting from the recognition of a need for a web site through to the final working design. It plugs up a lot of the gaping holes that topic-specific design texts leave open.

The over-riding concern and emphasis in the first section of the book is on how to organize the information on the web site in such a way that the target audience can readily get at it. To this end, the authors focus on three 'systems' that need to be developed, implemented and coordinated on a web site: a navigation system, a labeling system and a searching system. Once these systems are thought through and designed then the rest of the work becomes a matter of filling in the information content, functionalities and the bells and whistles.

Clear, concise and even a bit humorous, this book will definitely give you a peace of mind if you find yourself a bit overwhelmed at times when deciding on just how you will approach building a web site.

Heavy-duty Web design
This book presents a thorough introduction to the concept of information architecture for Websites. Written by librarians who specialize in information retrieval, this book explains why some sites are easy to navigate and others are impossible. It explains the steps necessary to plan the architecture of a Website, especially a large Website that will be created by a team of people rather than an individual. The authors suggest techniques for making clear to clients the importance of information architecture before work on the site actually begins. The book covers navigation systems and labeling systems (choosing useful names for links). It also contains a very thought-provoking chapter on search systems and factors that a Web manager should consider before choosing or building a search engine for a site. I would recommend this book to anyone in charge of planning or maintaining Websites, especially large Websites.
