Valuable Summary
I use this book as the recommended text for both undergraduate and graduate courses in landscape ecology. It has a useful synthesis of recent trends in the field and particularly good chapters on scale, landscape metrics and disturbance. The accompanying CD has jpeg versions of most of the figures, which is handy for preparing lectures, although the quality of some of the digital images from CD (especially graphs and line charts) isn't so great. The literature review is thorough without being overwhelming, so it's a good entry point into the professional literature in most areas of landscape ecology. My main criticism is that the writing style is somewhat dense; I didn't find it easy to read from cover to cover. People looking for a cursory introduction to the field may do better to start with an alternative text. As a teaching and reference text for landscape ecology, however, I think this book is the best available.

A Must-Have for Anyone into Landscape Ecology or GIS
If the credentials of the authors didn't convince of the quality of this book, I'm not sure I can. I will say that I have read and re-read the book several times, and that it's a vital resource in our laboratory. From the various issues of scaling to what analyses do what, this book is an excellent resource of theories and technologies involved in Landscape Ecology.

Cesar Landscape
It is a good book that help us to maintain an equilibrium of the landscape when we mad some changes to it. The content will be usefull for different areas of study, maily ecology, but also here in San Luis Potosi we have a class that we call landscape ecology. This class is the architecture carrer. We got many information from the book.

Say Again, Please: Guide to Radio Communications

This Book Saved My Radio Calls...
I loved this book. Plain and simple. My instructor was completely wowed by the improvement in my radio calls and my ability to think clearly and respond intuitively after reading this book. No pilot should be without this book, especially no beginning pilot. You want this book. I'm not kidding. Really, you do. ;-)

Should be required reading for all who suffer "Mike Fright"
Okay, I admit it: I'm afraid of the microphone. My tounge used to swell to twice it's size and my brain would to freeze whenever I pressed the push-to-talk switch. I came to the realization that this behavior stems from my lack of communications confidence. I just wasn't sure of what I should say and what to expect as a reply. After one reading of this small book, my level of confidence with the radio has grown tremendously. I barely even stutter when I talk to the Big Guys in ATC now. It would be exceedingly difficult to write a book that covers all aspects of radio communications but Bob has somehow managed to cover most of the bases in a book that can be read in a couple of hours yet doesn't insut my intelligence. I am on my second reading now and am picking up more and more useful tidbits this time around. Bob has also been willing to answer quesitons on just about any other aviation topic in a newsgroup called rec.aviation.student. His book is a is not meant to cover everything you'll ever need to know about communications. For me, it has been a great foundatation-builder for effective radio communications.

A must for student pilots
As a student pilot, with less than 30 hours flight time, I still find radio communication intimidating. Particularly with the towered airports. A while back, I completed my first supervised cross-country solo. What a disaster I was on the radio! (TIP FOR STUDENTS: Remove your finger from the talk button when pleading for help from your instructor). At any rate, I purchased this book and found it to be extremely helpful. It is very readable, and the examples are "true-to-life" situations that the typical reader has probably already experienced. Not to long after reading the book I completed my first unsupervised cross-country solo. Frankly, I probably would not have made the trip without the knowlege that I had gained from "Say Again, Please". Buy it.

Elements of Real Analysis
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (1976)
Author: Robert Gardner Bartle
Amazon base price: $17.00
Average review score:

Good stepping stone to Rudin
I read and studied this book before moving on to Baby Rudin, and it helped a great deal. Although it's not perfect by any means, it's one of the best undergraduate analysis texts I've seen. It has the rigor and thoroughness of Baby Rudin, combined with more motivation, a freer style, and a willingness to talk to the student more (rather than past the student, as Baby Rudin often does). It's too bad more people haven't heard of it.

OUTSTANDING!!!
I have read a number of texts on real analysis and I have been somewhat critical in my reading of late because I am an aspiring author of a calculus text. The conclusion I have reached is that Bartle has written one of the two best books on real analysis that I have seen. (Maybe even THE best!!) The other book that I would say might be it's equal is "Real Analysis and Point-Set Topology" by Donald and Mildred Stancl. Both of these texts give excellent introductions to the ideas of metric and other topological spaces, which I think is essential to a proper understanding of continuity and, of course, the heart of analysis itself.

Better than "Grendel"
After my initial dissapointment, (This book is not about the John Gardner who wrote the post Ian Fleming James Bond novels) I came to embrace this amazing book. Never has so much perspective been shoe-horned into such a space. The real gem in this book is the work of Kathy Vanspanckeren, whose winning personality and wit is evident on each page.

Vanspanckeren is the star here!
Robert Morace and John Gardner maybe be the big names that will draw in the public, but the real superstar work here is the work of Kathryn Vanspanckeren. She could edit the pants off a bonobo--and I've seen her do it! Her critical perspectives on John Gardner are so critical and perspective that they should be separated, expanded upon (maybe proof-read) and placed in a larger book, preferably with a picture of a her on the front. Because, as most publishers know, all the best books have pictures of chicks on the front.

Go a mazing with this amazing book!
Looking for the perfect gift for that puzzle buff friend of yours? Look no further. Mad Mazes is a delightful book of 20 different mazes, each with its own rules for traveling through the maze. Each maze is challenging and fun and, if you solve it, you will shout Eureka! In this book, you see the genius of Robert Abbott at work and at play! We call him the O. Henry of puzzles as his solutions often have a surprise or twist to them. Each maze is preceded by a fun story which gives the rules for traveling through the maze. So, whether you are 7 or 107, if you enjoy challenging puzzles, this treasure of a book is for you. The good news is that Robert Abbott has written a wonderful sequel to Mad Mazes. It is called SuperMazes.

Wondefully intricate puzzles for the stubborn or brilliant
By saying the word "maze" I'm probably conjuring the image of those flat angles of black lines. This is NOT what you'll get if you buy this book. Mad Mazes is precisely that--each maze has a complex set of dynamic rules. One allows you only to turn right--unless you pass a certain point, after which you can only turn left. Another is three-dimensional, and you climb and descend levels in an effort to reach bottom. You actually have to (gasp) think. I first got this book 6-7 years ago and still haven't solved all the puzzles! (And there are only twenty, to my everlasting regret.) Each is accompanied with illustrations and a delightfully humorous story.

Fun!
This book has been a great step-by-step guide to getting financially organized. It's geared to average working-class folks, not aspiring accountants and brokers. The author's humorous approach makes the material accessible and interesting!

The book begins with steps to determine where your money goes, then works through ways to eliminate debt, plan for emergencies, and invest money for various purposes: retirement, college, and other large expenses. The book also includes advice for buying insurance and completing your taxes.

The book is a beginner's guide, not an exaustive reference -- so don't expect to find all the information you need if you want to invest in individual stocks or understand each line of your tax return. Rather, it gives clear advice to new investors through commonsense arguments that require almost no background information.

Only two complaints: First, health insurance is not discussed. Some advice on such an important kind of insurance would have been very helpful to me. Second, the authors repeatedly advertise their website. (To their credit, the website ...is a pretty good resource. You might want to try it before you get the book or even instead of the book. It has free trial membership as of this writing.)

Fun & Informative
06/10/03 I like this book so far. I love the way it's written it gets you in the good mood for financial planning. It has me excited about learning how to manage my money.

It does not make you feel like you are going to deal with a seroius & tedious issue. I look foward to doing this. I feel like this is going to be fun especially with the jokes. It sometimes catches you off guard.

So far I give it 5 stars I will come back & update this later...

Architecture (Yesterday's Science, Today's Technology)

Author: Robert Gardner

This is my 9-year-old's favorite architecture project book.
This book has everything-science, art, history, math, and fun experiments using equipment that you may already have lying around the house. Some chapters include "Architecture, Mathematics, and Beauty," which explores symmetry and the Golden Ratio, and "Toward the Sky," with projects to build towers and bridges, to "The Sun and Building for the Future," where you can compare the heat absorption of different colors (using construction paper!) and insulation. While there are a few pictures of actual buildings used as examples of some of the principles in action, this is more an overview of engineering than of architectural styles. My nine-year-old has looked through a lot of architecture books so far this year, and she says this is her favorite because it contains so many interesting projects that she can execute on her own, the illustrations are uncluttered, and the instructions are so clearly written.

The photographs tell the real story, and truly represent body surfings roots as we know it today.

A Great Read
As always,Dr.Bob makes it easy to understand the strategies and economic outlooks of the market! In Where The Money I$, Bob writes as he speaks, giving readers useful and down to earth information they could put into practice for themselves or when recomending to others. There is always going to be short-term information and daily events that affect us as investors or professionals. Bob gives us the global, long term perspective that will allow us to be successful.

Dr. Bob is Right on the Mark!
Thanks, Dr. Bob, for a great book on investing! This book is something I have needed to read for a long time. When reading investment books, the advice is often about IRAs, 401(k)'s, bonds, stock market, market timing, etc.

Dr. Bob's advice is in a totally different area. He believes in something called "sectornomics" which means if you look at all the industry sectors and determine which ones will do well in the next five years, then invest in several companies in that sector, your portfolio will do well. Don't worry about which particular stocks too much, just pick the right sector. Pharmaceuticals, let's say. Then, for the majority of the book, Dr. Bob goes on about the various trends in the US and worldwide which will whip the stock market sectors one way or another.

Should you bet on a Japanese resurgence in the next ten years? Don't think so. How about betting on the graying of America? Sure, says Dr. Bob, but remember, Europe and Asia are graying too.

Doesn't sectornomics break the rule of investing that "the only thing that makes the stock market go up or down is a surprise?" Doesn't everyone know about the graying of America? Yes, they know, but no, it doesn't break that rule. Sectornomics means "looking at the same thing everyone else looks at, and seeing something different." Your own perspective can give you the added advantage over the market.

Inspired by Dr. Bob, I began my own personal portfolio based on alternative energy, because I have found out that this sector is about to boom in the next 10 years. A little research (using the Internet of course) and now I have a list of about 30 companies who are extremely well positioned to make a lot of money once alternative energy goes big. The key for me was seeing the big players (United Technologies, Idatech, Xcel, BP, etc.) investing heavily into this sector. BP makes millions of dollars yearly from manufacturing solar cells.

Dr. Bob's knowledge of statistics is absolutely amazing. And his writing style is very approachable.

I heard Dr. Bob speak at an investment seminar in Columbus, Ohio. His speech was good but his book -- excellent. Just buy it. It is the best investment you will make this year.

Serious Investors Only!
If you want to learn the principles behind the stock market, and optimize the value of your money, then this is the book to pick up. Bob Froehlich gives you a new an innovative approach to the market arena. The book is Overall a terrific read, and an invaluable tool for guidance to investment practices.
