Memoirs of an Invisible Man (Thorndike Large Print Series)

this book is like an old friend
I first read this book when it was published in the mid-80s and have read it again and again. One of my favorite books, and a consistently enjoyable read. The author weaves together elements of comedy, sci-fi and thriller effortlessly into one great story. One question, though: do any of you out there know who the REAL writer of this novel is? As another reader mentioned, I too have heard that "H.F. Saint" is a pseudonym, and that the writer is actually quite well-known under his (her?) real name. I'd like to know the true identity of the writer if only to read some of his/her other books!

The most fascinating book I've ever read!
Saint puts a unique and exciting twist on and old concept, that of being an invisible man. The result is a refreshing and fascinating read. We've all fantasized about being invisible, am I right? The main thought is "Think of all the possibilities!". The author seems to have done just that. When the main character stumbles into an accident and becomes invisible, he has to figure out how to survive in this world. Imagine the problems he faces, one example being that the food he eats, until it is digested and a part of him, is visible! Knowing he would now be considered a freak or outcast he has to avoid contact with other humans (except for one special woman)......it would be tough just to get groceries but how will he earn a living? Also, he has to avoid being captured by the one man who suspects his condition and wants to make him a lab rat for the government. The feature that makes this book so special is Saint's approach. The invisible man doesn't tell us his problems and then explain how he handles them. We stumble across the problems with him.....it's almost as if we're experiencing the same things he is. And many times I found myself saying, "Oh yeah, why didn't I think of that." This is the first book that I recommend, and I recommend it to any one that listens! You have to read this one. You will not be dissappointed!

A great book that is hard to put down
The main character in the book becomes invisible, due to a nuclear-related accident, a preposterous, but, in this book, almost believable possibliity. Daily life for Nick (the character of the title) becomes one challenge after another, which repeatedly leave the reader on the edge of his seat in anticipation, dread, and sometimes disbelief. The "cat and mouse"-like chase between Nick and agents from an unnamed government agency further heightens the suspense. Nick doesn't want to be a laboratory guinea pig; the agents just want to "help" him, albeit in light of their own agenda. A nice part of the book is the improbable but happy meeting between the invisible man and a woman at a party professing to her listeners that she believes in ghosts because her grandmother saw one. She turns out to be exactly what Nick needs to help him along in life and deal with the agents. I'm so disappointed that the author, H. F. Saint, does not have any other published work. I thoroughly enjoy this book every time I read it.

KIng of the Wind
I decided to read this book because I have heard about this book from my friends. I also read this because it had been awarded a Newberry Honor award. The day I was introduced to it, I thought it was boring. How I was wrong! Instead, the book was very interesting.
The main character of this book was a young, mute boy called Agba, but the most important main character is a horse called the Godolphin Arabian, or Sham. Agba is a kind boy who took care of Sham from when he was born, and after Sham's mother died. Sham becomes known as the fastest horse in his stables. Sham is a spirited horse that only listens to Agba, and no one else. I feel sorry for Agba because he ia a mute.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was fun reading about Sham and his descendants. The story plot was great. It also talked about what happened to Agba and Sham, and about their trip to France, and then England. This story was told by the owner of Sham's descendant. That's why this book received a Newberry Honor Award.

Great historical fiction for kids
This book was given to me when I was barely eight years old, almost thirty years ago. I learned how to read books that took more than one sitting with "King of the Wind".

The story is of a mute Morrocan stable boy, Agba, and a foal, Sham, who is born to one of the royal mares Agba cares for. Sham...and Agba...are selected to be part of a gift to the King of France. Their adventures in Europe are filled mostly with despair and cruelty, until Sham sires a foal that becomes the beginnings of the Thoroughbred breed we know today (this part is true; Sham was renamed "The Godolphin Arabian"; all Thoroughbreds must include in their pedigreeone of the three specific founding sires, and the Godolphin Arabian is one of them).

There's a lot here: adventure, triumph over adversity, a respect for other cultures, the care of the creatures that share our lives, and a healthy dose of humor about the absurdities of the powerful or elite.

As a kid, I eagerly devoured any Marguerite Henry book I could find. It's well worth it to get hard-cover editions that include the wonderful full-color illustrations by Wesley Dennis.

this is a great, breathtaking book for horselovers!
this has to be the most wonderful book ive ever read.from the moment i read it,my mind was instantly taken to the stables of morroco(sp?)with his beutiful horse.it is so imaginative, adventorous that you'll want to read it over and over.i think its one of the best books ive ever read.im reading it for the..........20th time i think:)you'll love this book if you love horses.it is very discreptive and i highly recommend this book to people, horsey or not.hope you read it.buy it,you won't regret it:0)

Charmed Life (Lythway Childrens Series)

Fantasy, wonderful fantasy.
I remember when I was 20 years old and discovered The Chronicles of Narnia for the first time. Now, 23 years later, I can look back at hours and hours of great fun. First reading the books myself, then reading them over and over for my four kids. A little later I discovered The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, but for about 20 years those were to only fantasy books I had read.

Then, three years ago the Harry Potter era started in our family. And now we live in a Harry Potter world here. But, in spite of all the pages a Harry Potter book doesn't last forever. It was with great pleasure that we some time ago opened my daughter's birthday gift and found the series The Worlds of Chrestomanci. They are perfect while waiting for the next Harry Potter to come, and perfect when you want something to read :-)

The first book in the series is Charmed life. It tells the story of Eric Chant, known as Cat, and his older sister Gwendolen. Cat and Gwendolen's parents dies in a boat accident, and all Cat have is his older sister. She is a witch, and Cat adores her. They first live with an old woman in the town, but it soon shows that Gwendolen has a very special talent for witchcraft, and to their joy they are asked for to come and live with the great Chrestomanci in his castle. Their life in his castle is not like the two kids expected, and Gwendolen, the witch, takes the easy way out and runs off to another world, Cat has to stay and fight his way through the days.

The novel is filled with fantasy and unexpected events. And it never let you get bored. The book is meant for young readers, and any booklover between 9-12 will love it. I even think any book lover between 9 and 99 will. Try the book, and you will be so charmed by it you just need the others in the series as well.
Is it magic? Who knows......

Britt Arnhild Lindland

An emtertaining story
Cat looks up to his sister Gwendolyn more than anyone else. It's prefectly obvious why, she's a very powerful witch. And ever since the two sibling's parents died Cat has clung to her every day. And when he's sent to llive with Mrs. Sharp, all she wants to do is nourish Gwendolyn's gift. But when there sent to live with the fabled Chrestomanci Gwendolyn is more or less put in her place. SHe is not allowed to pratice witchcraft. SO she sets up into proving the Chrestomanci wrong and porving that she is the most powerful one of them all. But Cat know's what his sister is capable of and when she dose something so powerful, he's the one who has to fix it.

Like many people I found the title of this book on a online list called "what to read after Harry Potter." When I read this I was very entertained. Cat's story is thrilling and suspenceful. I reccomend this book to fans of fantasy books such as Harry Potter and/or Tamora Pierce. Though it's not as good as JK Rowling's creations it's definatly a novel any fantasy lover should put in their collection. I'm planning on reading the other four novels in the series too. Read it you won't be dissapointed.

Just Another Great Novel She Has Written
Just as she has done in many of her novels, Jones cleverly animates the life of the young hero in Charmed Life. In all her stories, she demonstates the ability to take the reader around many obvious turns before they know the real truth. She does this in the life of young Cat, a unsuspecting magician in the making. She paints the average life of an unaverage boy. And she kept me going throughout the book, oblivious to the dark aspects of several of the other characters, and what the eventual outcome of the story would be. The presence of the patriarcal hero Crestomanci should indicate to anyone familiar with Jones' work that this one is another great read. I began reading Jones in junior high school, and continue to do so now that I am past college. Charmed Life is another of her books that I pick up and reread when I am between books. I have read all the Harry Potter books and loved each one. But in the back of my mind, I know that it was Diana Wynne Jones that originally inspired within me all the reasons that I all love Harry. Anyone will agree with me if they give Jones a chance. I also highly reccomend Howl's moving Castle, The Lives of Christopher Chant(especially for Harry Potter fans), Dogsbody, and Eight days of Luke (my personal favorite).

The main characters are Pual, Maureen,a hose named The Phantom, and Phantom's colt Misty.Paul and Maureen buy Misty and her mother at Pony Penning Day ,when men from Chincoteague go up and try to get wild ponies Assateague Island. Pual and Maureen raise Misty and the Phantom on their own. Their grandpa didn't think that they could raise both of the horses on their own because they were just kids. They proved him wrong by giving a lot of their time to train them. They had to work hard on the Phantom because she was wild.Tthe two kids learned that hard work pays off. Both Pual and Maureen changed in the story. In the end the kids are more resposible and work harder.I like this book because it shows that can do things that grown-ups usuay do. The Best!
This was the first Sandra Brown book I ever read. I stayed up till 6am to finish it. I loved it. Sandra Brown has gone on to be one of my favorite authors. I have read every book of hers I can find, and I am always looking out for new ones. Mirror Image and the Texas series are my favorites. I recommend these books every chance I get

One of my very favorites!!!
This was the best Sandra Brown book I have ever read--and I've read all her books. I have read, and re-read this book at least a dozen times and I think it just gets better every time. You really feel Avery's anguish and fustration--not to mention the love she has for Tate. I wish you could give a book more than five stars--I would probably give it twenty and still not think thats enough! I agree--this would make a GREAT movie!!!

Excellent Book!
This is the first book I ever read by Sandra Brown and it made me read all of her work. This is a great novel. I love it. I still pick it up and read the love scenes from time to time. I've been looking for a book that is as good as this one, but haven't been able to find one yet!

Essential Reference for the serious programmer
This book and it's Volume one companion are the best books available for anyone with at least a mild understanding of Java. Every method has accompanying sample code (available online for download). The format is perfect for the serious programmer. If you can only have two Java books, this two-volume set is it!

The most comprehensive Java reference
This is the best Java reference book available (along with volume 2). Good code examples and clear explanations of every class and each method within each class. A MUST for any serious Java developer.

wonderful, marvelous, buy, buy, buy
There is a reason this book is rated so highly. It is worth every penny you will spend on it. I would pay double the price, but don't tell the publisher. This is my favorite reference book, and my Java programming would not be as productive without this book. The book is huge, because it covers every class within the standard library (io, net, lang, etc.). As much as I appreciate the O'Reilly Nutshell book, this is far superior to that book. This has something Nutshell doesn't. Context. Not only does it have all the classes with all their methods, it puts each method in context. It shows you how they are used by providing relevant example code and descriptions. And the descriptions in the book are wonderful. You will look up a class and find a related class that will work better for your needs. I especially recommending getting this book for a team of developers. Leave the book in the room for office use. If you can so afford, get it for each developer. This is like the Post-it note. You would never live without it, even though you managed and may have even done well before it came along.

The Lost Son: A Life in Pursuit of Justice (Thorndike Large Print Biography Series)
Published in Hardcover by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (2002)
Author: Bernard B. Kerik
Amazon base price: $30.95
Average review score:

A Talented Man!
After reading Mr. Kerik's autobiography, I'd work for him emptying his trash or shining his shoes, just for the experience of learning from him. This man has so much to offer regarding work ethics and practices, running a company, prison, city, or department, raising employee morale, and living your life to your fullest potential. He could have used the setbacks that he encountered during his life to go down the wrong path, but he clearly demonstrates that you make your own choices and you make your own decisions on how to live out those choices.

Mr. Kerik grabs both horns of the bull and never lets go.

I believe this book would be enjoyed most by those who have interest in public service and law enforcement. It contains great stories, and was very exciting to read.

As someone with a great interest in law enforcement and who's trying to become a law enforcement agent, I would benefit the most if I had a mentor like Bernard Kerik.

I hope New York City is able to retain itself without the leadership of Mr. Giuliani and Mr. Kerik.

Gritty Portrait of an Outstanding, No-Nonsense Leader!
Caution: This book contains a lot of coarse and vulgar language and subjects. The purpose seems to be to provide honest texture about Mr. Kerik's life, rather than to provide shock value. Unless such things are very offensive to you, you will probably be able to look past them to the underlying story.

I delayed reading this book because the publicity about it was somewhat misleading to me. I thought that the book would simply capture the story of another outstanding police leader. Fine, but I don't normally think of police leaders as ranking among the great leaders. Was I ever wrong! I wish I had read this book when it first came out. I intend to read it again . . . and again!

I found this book to be one of the most inspiring and moving autobiographies that I have ever read. Mr. Kerik is the real life version of the sort of dedicated crime fighter that the movies love to create out of their imaginations. His story makes even The French Connection pale for me.

"You will read about true everyday heroes." That statement is profoundly true about this book. First, Mr. Kerik is clearly such a hero. Second, he has also worked with a lot of heroes and describes a lot of them. Third, as a leader, Mr. Kerik also takes great pleasure in finding and honoring heroes. Those three perspectives permeate every page.

The book has three primary story lines. The main one is how a tough kid who dropped out of high school found his way to become the 40th Police Commissioner of New York City. A secondary one is his search for his roots, which reveal some pretty daunting facts that he handles very well. The third one is added at the end, which is to describe the events of September 11th from the perspective of trying to direct the police response from the scene near the World Trade Center. Any one of these story lines would have made this an outstanding book.

Mr. Kerik's character has many unusual qualities. Although he is a person with little formal education, he is very interested in learning and applying new and better ways of doing things. With his talent, he could have made a lot of money doing things other than being a New York City police officer. But he wanted the challenge the job brings. Some of the roles he has taken on (such as running Rikers Island) would have been too much for almost anyone else. Yet he could look past the problems to focus on the important values of treating those who work and are imprisoned there with dignity, safety, humanity and fairness. In addition, he has lots of courage. He played undercover roles in the drug trade that could have cost him his life on almost any day. Perhaps the most appealing of his qualities is that he doesn't see any of this as being very special, and goes out of his way to point out others who did more.

Although it would be a joy to share with you all of the things I found remarkable about Mr. Kerik in this book, you'll enjoy discovering them for yourself by reading his words more than if I interpret them for you.

Where do you have a passion to do the right thing? Are you pursuing that passion? If not, how could you?

Turn loose all of your creativity and energy to accomplish something important . . . for all of us . . . and for yourself!

My review of The Lost Son
I enjoyed reading about Bernard Kerik's life and accomplishments. He had a rough start being abandoned by his alcoholic prostitute mother at age 4. It was really touching to read about how Bernard Kerik learned about his mother who died at age 34.

Bernard Kerik dropped out of high school at 16 when it was predicted by his principal that he would be nothing but a vegetable. Kerik began his law enforcement career as a military policeman in Korea in the Army. He studied and excelled in the martial art of Tai Kwon Do. His martial arts traning paid off as he later trained a Delta Force fighting group of soldiers. Kerik later became a New York City police officer where he seized tons of cocaine off the streets in the late 80s. Overall crime in New York reduced by 63 percent in 10 years There were 2,245 cases of murder in 1990 and 671 cases in 2000 mostly under the leadership of Mayor Giuliani and the efforts of cops like Bernard Kerik. He later became head of corrections of notorious Rikers jail where he reduced the number of assaults by inmates from 1,200 to 12 in just 1 year.

The events of September 11th are talked about in this book. Kerik talks the courage, compassion, and dedication of the people who risked and lost their lives that day. These are qualities that Bernard Kerik has shown all his life. This is a wonderful book.

AN ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL BOOK!!
SHADES OF TWILIGHT is the story of Roanna Davenport and Webb Tallant. Theirs is a love that took years to finally roam free. At first is was a simple crush Roanna had for Webb, her second cousin who's always treated like a sister. Years later, Webb is married to Roanna's mean spirited cousin, Jess. On one fateful day with one fateful kiss, Roanna and Webb sizzled and Jess is murdered. Though found innocent of her death, Webb is angered and hurt at his family's accusations and suspicions. He leaves the heritage he has been breed for and vows never to return leaving behind a shattered and heartbroken Roanna. Ten years later, at the request of her grandmother, Roanna set out to bring Webb back. They meet once again and that very night the passion that had been sparked that day so long ago explodes. But soon it becomes evident that someone is out to destroy their blossoming love. This book is filled with incest, murder, suspense, and best of all, a steamy, passionate and long awaited love. This is another fabulous book written by Linda Howard. You'll love it. Trust me!

PEOPLE, PLEASE, CHILL ABOUT THE INCEST
I won't bother to tell the story because it's explained in a lot of the other reviews. I felt I had to review this book for one main reason. Shades of Twilight is a wonderful story, the best Linda Howard book I have read and I can't understand the fuss about Webb and Roanna being related. Incest is a relationship between parent and child, brother and sister, but nowhere at all, in no religious book or oterwise does it say a relationship between cousins is incestuous. I thought Webb and Roanna's story was beautiful because they truly love each other and by negatively judging their relationship because of a mistaken idea of who should and should not love, I think you belittle the depth of that emotion (no offence to anyone). I think the book should just be taken as a beautiful example of enduring love and not be tainted by any prejudice. Oh and for the readers who seemed to think it was an example of Southern life, I think you should try and remember that the South was the setting but it could happen anywhere.

What Can I Say It's Linda Howard
Mystery, Romance, and Sensuality this book has it all and is written by a great author that keeps getting better and better.

Roanna is raised on her grandmothers estate in Alabama when her mother and father are killed. Her life is a torment and her torment is in the form of her perfect cousin Jessie who is cruel and mean to Roanne. The only bright spot in her life was Webb. He stood between the imperfect Roanna and the spoiled Jessie. Roanna finds herself falling in love with her hero. Webb eventually marries Jessie but finds out to late what a mistake that was. Webb's wife and Roanna's cousing Jessie is killed and the finger is pointed to Webb.

Webb leaves the area and years pass and Roanna goes and finds him to bring him back to their grandmother who needs him now. Webb comes back to the house that his wife was killed in to a killer that was never caught and to the feelings that he is starting to have towards Roanna.

This book really sizzles and is a great story by one of my favorite authors.

God calling...you.
A friend had given this book to me. I thumbed through it, thought it was good but then moved on. When I found myself in a tough situation not long afterwards I instinctively returned to this book and began taking it wherever I went, seeking and finding encouragement, support and most of all, peace. This book, in no small part, saw me through a rough period in my life. Each time I read it I'd find something else that it was saying to me (and still do). I've given my highlighter a good workout on these pages. Its message is the same throughout but never redundant. I am encouraged to move in a new direction. A little persistent practice of what is offered yields results. To seek God in our lives there must be action. Actions taken reveal the depth of our willingness to know Him. Wherever you are in your spiritual walk, either for many years or just for today, this book can only enrich and inspire you, and in turn, those who are in your life. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

God Calling book helps us answer HIM
A friend gave this book to my sister during a trying time in her life. She then gave me one and I in turn have given it to others and they too in turn have been so inspired, known and felt the Lord's embrace in challenging times of illness, solitude, that they too have bought the book for others. It's that good..you can't wait to read tomorrow's reading. Many may read their daily Horoscope but this is Gods-scope for our lives if we but answer when we hear God Calling and directing us daily through these morsels of love, joy, guidance, and blessings called daily readings. Others may NOT be open to a biblical gift or hearing about the Lord ...but they love their God Calling book. Get the leather bound and have a bookstore imprint the name of the wedding couple, graduate, grandparents, children, friends, boss, person that makes your life miserable at work etc...on it and give it to them as a gift. CU@2:00 IN PRAYER at this page...

Means To An End
I have read this devotional every day for the past seven years. I have found this book to be inspirational and helpful in keeping me focused on my daily walk with Christ. This book comes to us from two "Listeners". It occurred to me that it doesn't really matter how these God-inspired messages came about, it only matters that these messages lead others to God's love. A truly comforting and uplifting source of peace.

The best Study Bible
I love the New King James Version, put out by Thomas Nelson, but I loath Thomas Nelson Bibles. This is how I happened upon the Thompson a few years ago as I was relieved to find a NKJV not made by T.N. I first bought an NKJV in bonded leather. After 2 years of very heavy use, I bought an NKJV in genuine leather, and later a handy size KJV in genuine. All three of these Bibles are wonderful in every way.

The Thompson Study system is very helpful and they've graciously spared us from a myriad of religious cliche and personal opinion. The page layout is smart. The Bible text actually fills the page and all study helps and references are relegated to the side margins. There are so many ways to use the studies and references, I am unable to number them here. The concordance is as extensive as any I've seen. The 14 maps are colorful and very well done. Simply put, it's a complete, Jesus-exalting study Bible designed with excellence.

The construction of these Bibles is equally impressive. The paper is just right--not too thick, not too thin. The print is dark and sharp. Their font is subtil and very appropriate for the Bible, if you ask me. The red words of Jesus are RED. They're not muddy brown; they're not pink; they're bright, deep, beautiful red. They are printed consistantly page to page, not some pages lighter or misprinted, as the Thomas Nelson folks are plagued by.

Now that I own three Thompsons, I feel about them the way a good ol' boy down in the South feels about shotguns. "I have more than I need, but not as many as I want!"

Incredible Depth
I spent about 2 hours browsing this thing in a bookstore today and it is incredible. Full of historical facts, bibliograpies, topical idex, charts, timelines, background on the books and the authors, explanations of archeological sites and finds (and photographs), an amazing concordance, etc., etc., etc.....

What makes this edition most unique is its chain reference system. If you're the type who will take the time to flip a few pages to find the depth of a passage, this is for you. It gives other scriptural refences to things you might never have thought to put together. It will give you a very complete sense of the overall biblical context of a verse. It pulls easily overlooked concepts from verses and gets to the heart of matters beautifully.

This bible is known for its quality binding. It advertises its specific binding process and gives instructions on how to take care of it. I tear up bibles, but I would be comfortable knowing that this one will last for a long, long time.

It's not *huge* in size (especially for all that's crammed in there!), but it is a study bible and bulkier than your standard reference bible. I would not recommend this for those who aren't specifically willing to take the time and the effort to dig as deep as possible into the context of God's word. But if that's your purpose, go to it and God bless!

ALL-IN-ONE BIBLE LIBRARY!
For many years, I searched for the "ultimate" Bible. Being an avid New King James Version reader, we don't always have as many resources available as the King James or NIV people. My most useful Bible study tool is many, many cross-references, which I always looked for in NKJV Bibles that had the most. The Thompson Chain has much more than the standard cross-references. The chain references are just that: you go to the alphabetical index to find your subject, (which there are listed around 4,400 different topics) and you go to the first reference, and simply chain through the scripture references. In other words, they are cross-referenced in sequence order! The topics are as detailed as "blue" and as extensive as "God"; these more extensive subjects are then broken down into various sub- topics. Also, in the back of the Bible, the subjects are listed by title, then all the references are given, and the more main ones are chained throughout the scriptures, and some topics' scriptures are written out in the back also! There are also absolutely no commentaries, nor any conclusions drawn in this Bible! I would 100% recommend this Bible (in any version you use) for those of us who love many, many cross references, and believe first and foremost to compare scripture with scripture (1Cor. 2:13) in Bible studies. For those who like this, this Bible has everything!
