Nice coverage on the legend behind Dracula and the movie
I think this book is a must for fans of horror films and artsy movies. This Dracula is an artistic venture into the horror genre, most notorious for its gore and guts aspects. I like the photographs and the conceptual designs being put into the movie.

Marvelous account of the film.
If you liked this movie, you will like this book even more. It is perhaps one of the best books about the making of a film ever written. You will even get a chance to enjoy the script, and the actors' thoughts. Director Copppola is quoted throughout, as well as the costume designers, and other people involved. However, I felt, as I read through the book, that there was not enough about Gary Oldman, who starred as Dracula. I was looking forward to more of HIS insights than any one else's, for it was HE who brought such new and wonderful emotions to the role. The pictures in the book are wonderful. Drawings and little un-known facts are everywhere, making this truly an interesting read.

A GREAT BOOK!
This book includes tons of photos from the hit film Bram Stoker's Dracula.Includes the script from the film and the legend of the REAL DRACULA! A must have for Dracula fans!

boring stupid predictable english crap
Uneventful fluff about british horse racing. No mystery, no murder, a good way to kill time as well as brain cells.

High Stakes
High Stakes was an excellent novel. I chose to read it because it focuses on horses and because I have read other books by this author. This novel was a page-turner because there were several twists in the plot. It was easy to relate to the main character and feel what he was feeling, as if his life was yours. The book had certain sections that the reader really had to think about, because the plot was complicated at times. Also, the author has a way of not describing something until the last possible moment. For example, the characters discussed a critically important plan, and the reader themselves did not know what it was until the plan was executed. At times this made the novel some-what confusing, but did not result in the book being misunderstood. In the future I would read another book by this author.

Dick Francis' best, written intentionally for America
High Stakes marks the beginning of Dick Francis' (or Mrs. Dick Francis, depending upon who actually writes his books) writing for the American market. Tho' not the bone-cruncher the earlier books were, his toy maker is one of the more likable protagonists and the beginning zings!

The Architectural Guidebook to New York City
Published in Paperback by Gibbs Smith Publisher (1994)

not quite
I was a bit disapointed by this book. There is information on a lot of NY buildings, but the information does not always concern architecture and is usually very limited. Gives you an impression of all there is to see, but does not do much more than that. Photographs are not impressive. Much more intersting is The Architecture of New York City, by Donald Martin Reynolds.

Not for a quick trip
This book is really good and best used if you have a fair amount of time to wander around New York. It is like trailing through the city with a friend who has lived there for a long time; Marrone has great excursive lengthy interesting descriptions of a number of buildngs, and that's great. The problem is that each chapter has its own tiny map, and they are never put together in a larger overall map anywhere, making navigation difficult. If you have a lot of time, and want to do just a few buidings per day, that's fine. If you want to storm through NYC and see as much as possible in a limited amount of time, if is difficult.

Great companion to see Manhattan with
The most obvious reason to replace the AIA Guide with this book is size. Dealing with only one borough enables the author to go into more detail while reducing the size of the book. The AIA Guide is about half the size of a large yellow pages. The Architectural Guidebook to NYC is about the size of an average novel. That makes a big difference when you're stuffing it into your backpack or purse for a trip on subway or foot.

The more extensive entries are very welcome. In Union Square with this book and a view of the surrounding buildings, I was able to spend a pleasant and informative hour on a park bench, for free. That's a better bargain than the Staten Island Ferry.

Morrone keeps the architect's jargon to a minimum and knows his subject well. The historical insights and views on clashing aesthetics were skillfully presented. He pointed out a couple of museums of very high caliber that I wasn't even aware of. A book like this is a perfect jumping off point for thousands of topics, from neighborhoods to cultures to politics to construction.

I would encourage him to write similar books on the other buroughs, or better yet, an even more detailed work on each of the neighborhoods of Manhattan: each of them has at least a thousand buildings worth writing about.

Worth it for "Blades" alone, an example of how to do Batman
I've read all of the stories in this Batman TPB, and while the Bat-Mite and Poison Ivy tales are OK, the first tale, "Blades" by Robinson and Sale, is spectacular. If you're a fan of "Starman" or anything else by Robinson, buy this quick. If you like great storytelling and great art by Sale, buy this quick!

Kick Butt!
I especially liked the story with Bat-Mite! HE is so cute and funny. "Hothouse" is a little confusing though, but I think I pretty mush got it down.

historical value
Poetry is a means of understanding the human aspect of history. Pure history books do not illustrate the lives of the people. Great ballads are written in every culture to document the world that evolves around the common man. They also develop into tall tales which I feel is also valid on a cultural level. Contrary to the belief of many Americans, John Wayne was not the first folk hero in history. Francis James Child has collected a group of British ballads. These ballads give one an overview of British life through the ages. This is an abbreviated version of Childs collection. That is unfortunate since there is a wealth of great material that was cut from the ranks. Still ballads like Bonny Barbara Allen and The Unquiet Grave are glorious examples of folk poetry. I would reccommend this book as a beginner course. I hope to get my hands on a copy of the full collection. These ballads are classic components of English language literature.

good little book
The Dover Thrift edition of this book is a pretty good value. You get a handful of the great ballads Child gathered--like "Sir Patrick Spens", "The Unquiet Grave", "Lady Isabel ad the Elf-Knight", and "Bonny Barbara Allan"--without spending the fortune you would on the complete collection. It's a good introduction to the ballad, and these are some of the best written of the ancient British ballads.

Expensive, but a lot of useful information
A CD-Rom jammed with articles from EXECUTIVE EXCELLENCE. I actually got my copy as a bonus for subscribing a couple of years ago. Many of the articles are interesting, but they are all quite short, almost MTV-ish. This seems to be the preferred style for this publication. If you are a fan of Warren Bennis, or one of the writers who regularly contribute to that publication, this is a good way to pick up some new material from your favored writer. The articles are on a variety of topics, which means that there will probably be something for everyone with an interest in this subject, but by the same token, there will be a lot that won't interest you. The CD includes a search engine that is workable. I benefitted from the magazine and the CD, but they didn't set my world on fire.

Made an good attempt at relating to teens of today.
I had to read this book as part of a theology course(St.Ignatius H.S. Cleveland. It was a valuable tool to relating to the course I took. While I didn't agree with everything in the book, I admired the strength of Doc Pennock's beliefs and I fully reccommend this book to any school with a Morality course. The book also has great debate questions that can give a teacher or other students valuable insights on how others think.

Janes Cowan's St. Francis
The book is chock full of information, theology and philosophy.
I especially enjoyed the footnotes which are placed with the text rather than being at the bak of the book.

Francis was complex and this is a complex read.

thorough review of mcintyre's years in la.
weber does an excellent job in compiling and reviewing the work of cardinal mcintyre's tenure as archbishop of los angeles. the man built hundreds of parishes, schools and hospitals in his twenty plus years at the helm.

the author does not shy away from the cardinal's legendary battle with the ihm nuns in the wake of the second vatican council, nor the conflicts with latino militants. the text is fair to both sides.

mcintyre built la into one of the major archdioceses of the american catholic church. eminence is the record of this man's achievements and shortcomings. one of the best books of this kind.

Return to Centaurus-sci-fi novel: a review
There is quite a lot of action in this book. It is essentially a vision of the near future (the later 21st century). A crew of 25 astronauts from Earth travel to the Alpha Centauri star system on the latest design in spaceships and get involved in a local war between two kingdoms on two different planets. There are references to pop music and the characters are believable. If the reader has already read "The Third Star" by the same author, then the plot and characters referred to fall into place. This novel takes modern warfare into the space exploration era with some courageous imagination.
