a completely mesmerizing book of early times in america.
elam bartholomew kept copious quantities on notes his entire life about the daily adventures of living in western kansas. his life span encompassed travel by horse, then train, then automobile not to mention the advent of electricity and a sod home. a deep and abiding devotion to god country and family propelled this tough individualist thru life. his hobby of plant life and cultures turned into his live work. but his dairy entries on a daily basis opens a window to the reader to feel and experience life on the frontier of america

Facinating window into the life of an extraordinary pioneer.
Pioneer Naturalist on the Plains.. is more than the story of Elam Bartholomew. His diaries not only gives the reader an insightful look at this remarkable man, we are given a spectacular view of pioneer life. The book does what novels cannot. We see and feel what is like to live the pioneer life through the eyes of Elam. As he carves out a life for his family on the wild frontier, the reader lives his triumphs and tragedies. Beautiful Well Researched Needed Resource
Carleton Watkins is an overlooked figure in the history of American photography--Artistically we could not have wanted for more in someone recording the "wilds" of the West. Beautiful photographs of San Francisco and the Northwest's industrial beginnings, and timeless representation of Yosemite's natural wonder.

The Computer Training Handbook: How to Teach People to Use Computers
Published in Hardcover by National Training & Computers Project (1989)
Authors: Elliott Masie, Rebekah Wolman, and David J. Morris
Amazon base price: $39.00
Average review score:

The IT trainer's bible
If you are an IT trainer or someone responsible for IT trainers, this book is a "must read".

I have had the privilege of not only reading this excellent book on how to train people to use computers (and putting it all into practice) but also to have heard the gospel being preached from the horse's mouth. I have been training people to use computers (and training trainers) according to the "Masie" way for over eight years - and his teaching is still as effective in today's ultra-technological world. He puts it all across in the most "easy to read and remember" fashion with lots of hints and tips for the trainer. The company I work for develop software for the advertising industry and our trainers have to go out and train our clients to use our system. They all follow Masie's "Sagamore Design Model"(explained in detail in the book)and feedback on our training has been consistently high over the last eight years. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who is responsible for training people to use computers. I can assure you that your training effectiveness will double at least!

The Culture of Pain
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (1993)
Author: David B. Morris
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

A splendidly rich set of reflections on living with pai
This is an extraordinary book, serious and varied and passionate; I recommend it to anyone who has encountered pain, and would be happy if all doctors had to read it in medical school. It argues that modern society no longer has any effective ways of coping with suffering - especially chronic pain -, of finding meaning in it, and explores some of the ways people in the past learned to live with - and learn from - pain, pain understood not as an enemy attack on human lives which ought to be pain-free, but as a part of life which must be lived with and which can be meaningful in itself, not just a deprivation of meaning.

This is the perfect book for anyone who loves the Grand Canyon. Not only do you get gorgeous photos and historic shots of the 1905 El Tovar hotel, but there's more on Mary Jane Colter's Grand Canyon work and a chapter on the park. This is a perfect stocking stuffer or very reasonable little gift for someone heading to the canyon for a honeymoon or anniversary!

English-Spanish Dictionary of Plant Biology
I am in a college botany class and this book has been a life-saver. Its loaded with definitions of everything under the sun about plants--and all in one volume. My need was mainly as a plant dictionary but you could also use the Spanish portion of the book. I would strongly recomend the book for people who need a botanical reference guide with clear definitions of hundreds of terms.
