An Interesting collection of historical documents
An insight into a complicated man's mind. This book is for historians who are trying to put together their own pictures of John Paul Jones. Most people would find this book dull and for them I would recommend one of the many books written about the founder of the American Navy.

John Paul Jones and the American Navy in the Revolution
This juvenile biography shows that John Paul Jones did much more in his life as a naval commander than utter the immortal words, "I have not yet begun to fight." Norman Jean Lutz tells the story of how a young boy born in Scotland named John Paul ended up being buried at the U.S. Naval Academy as the Father of the U.S. Navy. Always having a strong love for sailing on the seas, he became the captain of his own ship when he was only 21, even though he did not have any family connections to aid him in his career. The famous battle between the "Bonhomme Richard" commanded by Jones and H.M.S. "Serapis" is usually mentioned in American History textbooks, but Lutz gives more details about the story, in which Jones wins the battle although he loses his ship. However, what proves more fascinating are the exploits of "Pirate Jones" on the U.S.S. "Ranger," which actually attacked English coastal towns and shipping. Certainly these exploits were as important as his more famous sea battle. The idea that Jones is the Father of the U.S. Navy basically comes down to the fact he advocated a naval college, along with the assertion that other ideas have been adopted and are still used by the U.S. Navy today. Lutz touches on both the ambition and pride Jones evidenced throughout his naval career, telling about the various slights Jones felt he had received in terms of commissions. The controversial side of Jones's nature is not explicitly developed, but young readers will certainly get the idea. This book is illustrated with historic paintings and engravings, most of which actually have to do with Jones and his naval career (this is not always the case with these books). Other titles in the Revolutionary War Leaders series include Nathan Hale, Thomas Paine, Betsy Ross, and George Washington.

Good vs. Evil in 19th Century West
This tape will hold your interest, with all kinds of sound effects, music, and many different voices. It's well done. The story is just a tad trite, with that old dog, W. B. Van Hardin being such an evil fellow, and Tack Gentry such a gallant gentleman. Why did Tack leave his woman for two years? To raise money? A few silly questions in the flush of the excitement of Good winning out over Evil. Diximus.

Liked how Eddie was always trying to be the big shot.
My name is Leigh. I liked that Eddie tried to be always a smart aleck. And how he said that he would prove that Mrs. Waterford wasn't a mermaid. And whenever they got in the lake, Eddie would try to splash her. And I liked when Eddie pulled Liza in the water.

If you are a fanatic...
If you are a Python fanatic, then you will love this book. There are two drafts of the film included, as well as a variety of pictures and lots and lots of Terry Gilliams eccentric sketches.
There is no history of the film given here though, and there are no personla recollections from any of the members. Just the two scripts, a financial summary, and the pictures and graphics. If you are interested in the history of the film, you will have to find other books on Python, or the Grail dvd.

If you've seen the movie....
The format is a mass-market paperback, but this isn't a novelization but rather the screenplay as the movie was made. You'll notice that last has a subtle distinction. Oftentimes screenplays differ notably from the movies as you see them--scenes are cut because they didn't work, cost too much to do, or just because of the limits of time. The screenplays of Brazil and Monty Python and the Holy Grail are full of wonderful little tidbits that didn't make it to the screen. Unfortunately, for Life of Brian, there's only the parts that did get made, which are funny indeed, but you've already seen them.

Easy to read!
This was the first Bailey School Kids book that my son and I read together. He is in the 3rd grade and found this pretty easy to read. We both enjoyed it and will be reading more Bailey School Kids books in the future.

Totally engrossing
John Whitehead comes through as a real person with a not so promising background who emerges as a "bigger than life" Christian man. He truly makes one believe that with God all things are possible. Not only do we learn the truth about Paula Jones, but he also has met Clinton, Dobson, Jim Bakker, Jerry Falwell, Anita Hill, Pat Robertson, Randall Terry, etc, etc. And, though the book is not about her, I am equally enthralled with his wife, Carol. What a woman! She should write her own book about her life with John and how she perservered. You will be fascinated about John Whitehead's "conversion story."
