historical perspective
Dr. Sutterlin has written a truly remarkable and intriguing book. Since the fall of the Wall, it is important to understand the diplomatic intrigues involved in the Munich Revolution against the background of American Wilsonian missionism. The ironies involved in the Munich situation often parallel those of more recent history. This book is a wonderful source for all who want to know every detail of the almost hippie-like backdrop of the Munich Revolution. It is exceptionally well-researched, extremely analytical. It also is very well written and reads like a novel. I could not put it down.

A Basic Necessity for Pain Care Providers
This book, written by two of the world leaders in pain research, has what you need to understand the mechanisms of pain and chronic pain conditions. This is a "must have" reference for anyone who is involved in the treatment of pain patients, both acute and chronic. Many cases of chronic pain could be avoided by the prompt recognition, diagnosis and appropriate treatment. This book gives you tools that you need. Pain management is a largly neglected field of medicine, and the patients and the health care structure pay dearly for that lack. This book can do a great deal to remedy that situation, but you must get it and use it well for this positive outcome to occur. The time you spend with it will be time used wisely. Devin Starlanyl

Moving poetry from a time of loss.
If only one worthwile thing came from the forst world war (1914-1918) it may have been some of the finest poetry in the english language. Several poets represented here (Rupert Brooke, Edward Thomas, Wilfred Owen and others) lost their lives while ironicaly producing their finest works. This fine collection, splendidly arranged and read, gave me in turn feelings of hope, outrage, regret, humor, and resignation. The final work, Laurence Binyon's "For The Fallen" eulogizes the dead and their memory. Although written for the English dead, it serves well as a memorial for all war dead. Set against Elgar's "Nimrod" music, it is moving and emotional.

Teachers, help your students succeed in elementary school
"Preventing Failure in the Primry Grades" details a catch up program for the child who is seriously behind in basic arithmetic and reading skills. It is aimed at teachers more than parents but parents will find the information on teaching techniques very helpful too. There are chapters on mangaging your classroom, teaching (and remediating) reading, developing language skills, and teaching arithmetic. Another excellent book by Englemann.

MY CHILD IS PROOF THAT THIS PROGRAM WORKS
My oldest child Devin is living proof that this reading program works. When my oldest was in 3rd grade, his reading level was at kindergarten level. We tried everything for him, tutoring, spending the extra time with him to no avail. His school, Rio Altura, in Riverbank CA piloted this program for their Special Education class. By 5th grade, he was at beginng 5 grade level reading. His math skills caught up as well. By the time my youngest started kindergarten at Rio, the entire school was using this reading program. My youngest, Marcus, and I was so scared that he would have the same reading disabilities that the oldest had, is at 1st grade reading level where he should be, because his foundation began with Reading Mastery. Since then, we have moved to the Sylvan School District in Modesto, and I wish to help incorporate this incrediable reading program into my youngest school.
I cannot thank Rio Altura School and Mr. Fletcher enough for all the help and incrediable job they did for my sons.
Thanks for reading this! Michelle

A great next-step!
At a loss for where to turn after my four year old finished "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons," (Engelmann) and its suggested reading list, this book allowed me to further guide my son in his love of reading. I found it easy to use. My son found it both challenging and rewarding.

My son truly enjoys this textbook
We bought a copy for our home since the school does not permit the children to bring the texts home. We truly enjoy this book. It presents alot of science and cultural information while helping children master their reading skills.

An Excellent Study by an Underrated Social Critic
Kracauer's "Salaried Masses", finally translated after seventy years, is a fascinating study of Weimar society, with a particular emphasis on the workforce and the dynamics between employers and workers. This analysis, along with his collection of essays entitled "The Mass Ornament", shows a side of Kracauer that surfaces only occasionally in his more popular works like "From Caligari to Hitler", a side that is highly critical of social institutions, especially those structured upon a fascist hierarchy. His discussion on the tactics employers use to train and pacify workers is outstanding (early secretaries were taught to type with the rhythm of music coming from a phonograph; the corporate "trainers" slowly increased the speed of the record until the women were typing with sufficient speed). The role of company-sponsored sports or recreational events (baseball, picnics, etc.) does not escape scrutiny and it's amazing how relevant much of this material is in today's corporate-dominated culture. It's a brief and highly-engrossing read that anyone interested in the functions of social institutions should enjoy.

Constructivist graphic design
This book presents a comprehensive overview of work from a two-person graphic design team based in Switzerland. Siefried is a self-taught designer which I believe makes it even more interesting. A lot of their work has constructivist roots and shows good design process. The range of work is over a long time period and the designs have a certain timelessness which is a quality indicator in my view. I would love to see a new book by this team.

Excellent study of the man and his work.
It is a commonplace observation that the Great War changed Western culture fundamentally and ineradicably, lending to formerly respectable sentiments like Horace's "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" an indelible bitterness.
Sassoon, one of the most prominent figures among Great War writers, produced a influential body of poetry and memoirs which are accessible and worthwhile today, yet the man himself is largely unknown, partly due to his own reticence. Moeyes, a Sassoon expert, in this admirably readable work traces the elusive writer's life and career with examples of his poetry and prose, examines his relationships with contemporary literary figures, and places his work in the context of Georgian poetry.
Highly recommended for students of English literature in general, and Great War writing in particular.
