A True Classic Bedtime Story
I love this book! I can distinctly remember reading it from my childhood. Now, I want to read it to my four children and I am trying to get a copy. It is a special book - the story and illustrations are great. I actually can't remember the exact story line - just that I LOVED the book.

Alexander and the Magic Mouse
An American classic children's book that I read over and over as a child and will now read to my twins. The story is exciting and hart-warming. The illustrations are beautiful. Your child will not only enjoy the pictures but enjoy the story over and over again.

A childhood favorite
I loved it as a kid, and my kids love it now too. I wish I could find something else by this author. Beautiful illustrations as well.

Truly Inspiring
This book is truly inspiring. When I was younger my brother Eric (who is mentioned in the book) was diagnosed with a brain tumor and later passed away. This book helped me understand what cancer did to him. This book helped me cope with the loss of my brother! This book also helped me cope with the loss of the other children mentioned in this book! Thank you very much Mara for writing this book & helping me get through this! I highly recommend anyone who has lost a loved one to cancer to read this book!

Beyond the Rainbow, a journey of faith
Mara expresses the same hurts, disappointments, fears, and anger that the rest of the world does when their world is ripped apart, but she tempers it with her knowledge of God's word and His neverending mercy and compassion. She is able to continue to live and give when the rest of the world might give up..... Truly inspirational!

I Couldn't set the book down
I am probably a biased reviewer knowing the Alexander-Azlin family for about 4 years, but this book is very emotionally moving. I was teary eyed at some points, which should say a lot about the book coming from a guy who usually is an emotionless stone. I am a slow reader and usually it takes me three months to read a book, I read this 500+ page book in just over a week. You will not regret buying this book.

Greene Giants!
This is my first introduction to Greene & Greene's work. If you have never seen it before, think of Frank Lloyd Wright's work, except everything is allot more rounded, and comfortable looking, except for the exteriors. I would say though that Frank Lloyd Wright was a better architect, but he could have gotten Greene & Greene to make his homes interiors allot more homey looking, and less dated. If your a fan of Wright's or the Art's & Crafts movement buy the book.

A magnificent introduction to two great architects
The Greene brothers were architects who designed in the Arts and Crafts style. Like Frank Lloyd Wright, their style was so distinctive that they are not considered as examples of a type, but as architects whose style stands by itself. Unlike Frank Lloyd Wright, the Greene brothers' practice was almost completely limited to personal residences. This has probably limited the reach of their reputation. Outside of the Gamble house, which has been made into a museum, the work of the Greene brothers is generally not accessible to the public. All but one of their houses was in California, most of them in Pasadena. One wonders how well known Wright would be had he never designed the Guggenheim, or the Marin County Civic Center, or if he had never ventured outside of Chicago.

This book addresses the problem by taking us inside twenty-five examples of Greene and Greene's work. The text is accompanied by the breathtaking photography of Alexander Vertikoff. I own a large collection of books on the architecture of this period, and those illustrated by Vertikoff stand in a class by themselves. His photos are magnificent, doing justice to the material he portrays. I doubt if there is a finer photographer working in this field today.

With photos like these, it would have been easy to turn this volume into nothing more than a glorious picture book. Instead, Bruce Smith provides an engaging story of the careers of the two architects. The best writing is found in an extensive introduction, where the author discusses the Greene and Greene style in general terms. One can see at a glance how the style starts with Arts and Crafts. Indeed, there is a wealth of Stickley furniture in many of the houses. It is equally obvious how the two went beyond the plain craftsman designs so common further east. The Japanese influence was much stronger here, and the craftsmanship in the wood joinery was much more refined. There is more woodworking than carpentry here. The woods included Burmese teak, Honduras mahogany, Port Orford cedar, oak, maple and redwood. In some cases, the brothers were able to design furniture, landscaping and gardens to go with the architecture.

For the remainder of the book, we get a tour through twenty-five houses designed by Greene and Greene. Each house is presented in the order of its design and construction, with a history of the entire house to the present day. In some cases, this includes restoration after some abuse. Some of these houses were created on a budget; others were done with no apparent limits on the imagination of the architects. All are works of art, created as a labor of love by all concerned. For anyone unfamiliar with the work of Greene and Greene, this is an excellent introduction. For those who are already captivated, this book is a must, if only for those magnificent pictures.

Greene with Envy
As an aspiring woodworker with apparently very little natural talent, I can only view Greene & Greene's work with a mixture of awe and jealousy. While I find much of what Wright has done to be at times inaccessible and dated (primarily because so many others have attempted to copy or incorporate his style into theirs - and failed miserably by the way), the Greene's work is absolutely gorgeous, and would fit in with many current styles.....But then again you all know that. The question is why buy this particular book?

If you are looking for wonderful, full-page color photographs this is it. The first 50 pages are devoted to the G&G style; there is a page or two devoted to Materials, Joinery, Lighting etc. Descriptions are quite brief, and include a couple of pics.

The next 170 pages are devoted to 25 different houses with narration about the original design process, the ensuing history, and the current state. Again tons of color pics, and lots of shots of the furniture they designed to go with the particular house.

If you are looking for an in-depth discussion, check out Randall Makinson's "Architecture as a Fine Art/Furniture and Related Designs. These two books (now available in one edition) cover the G&G history in detail, but have less photos (many in black and white). They do have many front on center views of the furniture (as well as early drawings) so if you are interested in building their furniture, these books make a suitable companion to the one being reviewed.

A great read that you will remember
Dennis Alexander has crafted a story that is hard to put down and easy to remember. He has created an alternative reality that rings frighteningly true, which he has combined with a knowledgeable representation of the peoples of Central and South America. Alexander's eye for detail and his ability to create a fast moving plot will pull you deeply and quickly far into the jungle and to other places you never dreamed of. When you close the book after the last page, you will find yourself wondering what is more true: what you thought you knew about the world - or what you have read in THE SABASTIAN CANE CRONICLES. That is the sign of a classic!

Thrilling "by the seat of your pants" action at it's finest!
I have to admit, after just a few pages, I was hooked! This book was most exciting, fast-paced and had me sitting on the edge of my seat all the way through! I took this book to the beach and just could not put it down - I ended up staying the whole day just to finish this MUST READ! The author has an obvious talent for writing in a way which makes you feel you are looking at a visual image of this exciting story - and it would easily compete with the fast paced action movies of today! The sheer experience of this story was one I will not soon forget! Its very interesting characters, so very human and yet somewhat bigger than life, are the types of characters you "feel" and experience with throughout the entire story.

The Sabastian Cane Chronicles are completely entertaining with excitement and thrills while remaining well rounded and well researched. In fact, this is the kind of story that leaves you wondering just what IS possible and true in our world! Mr. Alexander paints the perfect picture of ensuing action, real life adventure, and universal chaos and blends it with both fantastic myths and cold hard facts. Weaving in much of the Mayan beliefs and culture - this story took me on a roller coaster ride of sheer pleasure! Not your typical story of good vs. evil - yet while reading it I felt connected to the age old good vs. evil beliefs. Overflowing with good twists, action and thrills, I'd rank this novel as one of the best in it's genre. I simply could not put the book down until the final page!

An afternoon with Dennis Alexander is a treat and an enjoyable experience indeed! I can't wait to get my hands on his next works! I urge you to check out this page-turner... You'll be very happy you did!

Exciting, Erotic, a Page Turner
From the moment I began this book I was hooked ! I could not put it down. At four in the morning I finally had to stop because I had to work the next day. I took it to work and read it every chance I got, when I went to the dentist I sat in the waiting room laughing and crying. The range of emotions Dr. Alexander brought out in me were wonderful. No book I have read has ever taken me into such entertaining places, or kept me wondering what was going to happen next. The torment and joy that Cane experiences I experienced. This book is very well written, Alexander is right up there with Tolkin and Herbert and probably Hemmingway.

Ty Cobb
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (1985)
Author: Charles C. Alexander

The true historical record of Cobb
Alexander approaches baseball history as a historian; not a mere storyteller. This book reflects that approach. Alexander reports the feats and faults of Cobb, but doesn't try to pass judgement. Cobb's career speaks for itself (men are still chasing some of his records). However, in our age of political correctness Cobb's misbehavior speaks louder.

Alexander details a complete Cobb. For all his faults Cobb was mannered and gracious in public (most of the time), a perfect host (if he liked you) and a generous philanthropist. This is the side most other Cobb bio's whitewash.

This book proves useful as a resource about Cobb. It details the facts about his life season by season. The only way to improve the book would be to add more detail and color to some of Cobb's exploits-- but then the book would have to be about 500 pages.

I consider this to be the primere biography of Ty Cobb. However, those looking mostly for anidotes, stories and that harsh personality brought to life might want to check out Al Stumps' "Cobb". I suggest reading both to develop the full image of the Greatest innovator baseball has ever seen.

A fascinating biograph about baseball's legend
Ty cobb was the most ideal hitter in baseball before "the Babe" opened its new era.

The author described well enough for me to understand 1900-1910's players, ballparks, other circumstances around baseball.

I sincerely recommend this book to all the baseball fans.

Excellent
Perfect companion to Al Stump's bio of Cobb. Alexander is more factual; Stump gives the reader a more thorough understanding of Cobb and his peculiarly ferocious personality. (The Alexander and Stump biographies portray a man who is one part Bedford Forest, one part Patton, one part Perot and one part Michael Jordan). For instance, Alexander devotes little more than one paragraph to Cobb's nervous breakdown in August, 1906. On the other hand, Stump details the inhumane hazing Cobb received from his yankee teammates in 1906 due to southern upbringing which led to Cobb's breakdown and fed his massive paranoia. Stump does a much better job on detailing Cobb's rivalry with Babe Ruth. Alexander briefly mentions the rivalry; Stump details the intense hatred Cobb felt for Ruth. For example, as player-manager of the Tigers, Cobb would often scream at the thick-lipped Ruth from the dugout, "You Nigga', Nigga' etc., etc.." However, where Stump takes many of Cobb's stories and yarns at face value, Alexander sifts through the clouds and tells the reader what is definitely true and leaves out what might be lies. Ty Cobb is the most interesting baseball player of all time though not the most important (Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, Roberto Clemente and, because of his role in free agency, Catfish Hunter were more important than Cobb). To get a real good feel of Ty Cobb, you need to read two books. Mr. Alexander's book is one of the two.

One of the Best
Alexander 334-323 BC: Conquest of the Persian Empire (Campaign Series 7) by John Warry is one of the best of the Osprey Campaign Series. Unlike most to the other books, Alexander does not focus on a given battle or a series of battles, but on the almost decade long conquest of Persia and neighboring countries, such as parts of India. If one is looking for an overview of Alexander's conquests then there is probably no better book. The battles are described in such a manner as to acquaint the reader with the ins and outs and the maps are beyond excellent.

Warry does a fine job in explaining how 50,000 infantry and cavalry troops were able to defeat an empire with troops several times their number. Focusing on the the tactical brilliance of Alexander and the innovations in battle field technologies, the book explains why Alexander was victorious. It is written in a readable fashion and is a good place to start for anyone who is interested in the conquests of Alexander.

A bit bias
It is a very interesting book. But it is written from the Greeks point of view about the Persians. For examole, it is well accepted by modern historians that the Persian army was not 600,000 men and yet the author fails to mention this and just repeats the old fictional account that was passed on from the past. However, I recommend this book for anyone interested on ancient history and Alexander the great. But it is a bit bias.

Like a Discovery/History Channel TV special in a book!
Don't let the size of this book fool you---the point of reading is to understand and this is the best book I've read that puts Alexander the Great's campaigns together in a way that military professionals and casual readers can understand. Every war form we use today has its antecedent in the past--there is a lot to learn from the past if we take the time to reflect on it.

Warry shows some remarkable things--that Alexander's Army of 40,000 defeated a Persian Army of 600,000 and did it with almost no casualties because in ancient war shields defeated arrows and spears. The Macedonian phalanx--a formation of men with shields linked together would close on the enemy at foot speed led by Parmenio, while Alexander surged ahead with his cavalry and collapsed his enemy while the phalanx held the enemy. Think of how Commanders combined their arms in the film, Braveheart to see how Alexander waited until the time was right before placing himself and his Cavalry force at the critical spot to smash his enemy's structure. It was when enemy cohesion and formations collapsed---when they threw down their shields and ran---that the high casualties we usually associate with 1st Generation muscle-powered combat come from. That we are having too many casualties on the modern, automatic weapons fire swept battlefield, means its high time we re-examine the individual Soldier shield to recreate a phalanx capability today.

When Alexander confronted the walled island city of Tyre/Sidon he built siege engines on both ships and rolled across a causeway of land he built by throwing stones into the sea as foretold in the Bible in Ezekiel 26. Warry shows the siege in amazing detailed, color illustrations that enlighten without boring the reader as a dry "scholarly" book tends to do. He then marched across the known world at amazing march speeds--Warry describes the weaponry/equipment in great deatil--you'll notice the macedonians wore a "himation" which could be used both as a sleeping blanket and as a coat--there was no wasted weight being carried on the Soldier's back--a lesson we could stand to relearn today.

Reading Warry's book with its long-range and close-up maps and illustrations from ancient engravings and modern depictions is like an inter-active computer simulation of the battle---you can see both the "big" picture and the "little" picture, in short this book is a masterpiece. We need to re-evaluate our views that for a book to be "accurate" it has to be visually dull, especially in the computer age we live in where we can with hyperlinks go to an entire world of background information from all walks of life on any given subject.

A Very Well Docemented Book That Is Clear And Easy To Unders
I did the CIPT training course hoping that it would be enough to pass the exam. Although the instructor was excellent, the documentation was not. It did not couther certain topics in detail, and was hard to follow. As I had to pass the exam for myself and so that the company kept its Cisco Partner Status I had to get some good documentation.

Although I am only half was through this book I am finding it excellent. It goes into good detail on the information, which you have to know, whilst not sending you to sleep on information, which is not relevant to call manager, networking, or telephony. I am confident that once I have read the book a few times I should be able to pass the exam without too much trouble. Cannot say this about the Cisco training documentation.

Excellent Book!
There is no more authoritative book on the market on Cisco CallManager. This book answered questions for me that I couldn't find anywhere else. In particular, the dial plan chapters unravel the difficulty of complex route plans and helped me to understand each component of the dial plan process. I reach for this book frequently as I administer my CallManager systems!

Excellent In-depth Information about Cisco CallManager
This book includes signific in-depth information that I have not been able to find in any Cisco documentation. After reading this book I have gained a much stronger understanding of the inner-workings of the software. Understanding the architecture of the software will help anyone who is installing, designing, administering, or troubleshooting a Cisco IP Telephony network. I highly recommend this book.

Superb!
This is like a Nancy Drew book only better. Vesper Holly is a young woman who is in the care of a couple - Brinnie and his wife Mary are friends of her deceased parents. Vesper is headstrong, courageous, daring, fun, exciting, smart and talented.

In this book her guardians are invited to a diamond jubilee and Vesper convinces them to go. So off they go only to run into their old nemisis who has tried to kill them in previous adventures. This time is no different. A kidnapping, traveling with gypsies, a bomb, and many other exciting things happen.

What an excellent book. I learned a little bit while I read this book and I totally enjoyed the read.

Enjoy.

It's Vesper & Brinnie again... in The Drackenberg Adventure!
"Look out Indiana Jones! Here comes Vesper Holly!"... how completely true in this fantastic book by the author of the Prydain Chronicles. Vesper's back, along with her insufferable guardian Brinnie and his suprisingly strong-willed wife, Aunt Mary. The dear girl has dragged them off again, this time to a diamond jubilee for the Grand Duchess of Drackenberg, where they promptly bump into the notorious Professer Desmond Helvitius. Naturally, Vesper wants to know why Helvitius is visiting Drackenberg, so off she goes, dragging Brinnie around with her like Sherlock Holmes dragged Dr. Watson about the streets of London! Like all of Vesper's stories, adventure is the key. Kidnapping, exploding sausages, and a portrait by Leonardo DaVinci follow, making this a non-stop action adventure! Move over, Indiana Jones! Make way for Vesper Holly!

Vesper is the girl of 1870 and 2001!
This is a great book for all ages to read. Creative, original and not to mention funny, this book keot me reading until four in the morning. A girl named Vesper, a courageous, smart and strong girl, goes off to the country of Drackenberg with her aunt and uncle. Her dear aunt is then kidnapped, catapaulting them into a high-racing adventure that ends up with a DaVinci painting and guard dogs snapping at their heels. I could not put this book down. It was exciting, suspensful and funny all at the same time. It was a good change from all the books about courageous boys to find one about a smart, strong girl. This book is a great read for anyone.

Informative
This deck makes a good attempt at making the ancient art of tea leaf reading, normally inaccessible to the fly-by-night psychic, into something that can be approached and appreciated. The readings it gives are easy to do and understand. The only problem I have had with this deck is its unwieldiness - there are far more cards in this set than almost any other. This makes it a bit hard to find some other box or holder to put it in later, as well, since the original box doesn't keep closed very easily. That aside, though, this is a very fun and interesting deck.

no more tarot!
I just recieved my tea leaf cards and I already have a special
connection with them. I spent years trying to understand the tarot and its esoteric nature only to find that I cant interpret
them as well as these. At least the meanings are printed on each card, and the writter insists not to read them as one, but as a spread. With time and patience, one can become a good tealeaf fortune reader. Good Luck-

Wow! Is this kit accurate!
I have been using this kit for a few months now and am amazed at how accurate it is. In fact, I have gotten to depend on it so much that I divine my weekly fortune without fail so that I know what kind of a week it is going to be.

I think the reason Tea Leaf Fortune Cards are so accurate is because there are 200 cards and each card has a very different meaning, unlike Tarot which doubles up and triples up on its meanings so that you have a hard time knowing exactly what the cards are saying. These cards are also quick and easy to read as the meanings are printed on each card. They're really great.
