Just when you thought evil couldn't get any worse...
Truly a master of his art, F. Paul Wilson grabs you HARD and doesn't let go with Nightworld. I read The Keep. Scared the hell out of me. I read The Tomb and The Touch. Great stories, but I never saw the connection. Then, with Reborn and Reprisal, I was beginning to see what was coming. And Nightworld was it. Rasalom (evil incarnate) is freaking nasty. There is nothing he wouldn't do to get this planet called 'Earth'. Nightworld was a 24-hour book. Set aside 24 hours straight, becuase you cannot put the book down. Characters that span 5 novels come together to fight an evil that is older than "Old". To take the time and patience to write 5 books to set the stage for this final novel is a talent most of us can only dream of. I'm glad Mr. Wilson chose to share it with us. You MUST read the five aforementioned novels to get the true feeling of this series. You won't be sorry.

EXCELLENT BOOK!
F. Paul Wilson really intermeshed the characters and storylines from his five "prequels" in this final book of the series. (The five "prequels" are The Keep, Reborn, Reprisal, The Touch, and The Tomb.) The amazing fact about all of these books, and even Nightworld, is that each may be read individually without having read the others, and you still understand what occurs within each. My husband and I were very impressed with the way Mr. Wilson pulled all the intersecting stories together and made sense of it. This is definitely an "Edge of Your Seat" and "Can't Put it Down" book. Job well done Mr. Wilson.

Apocalyptic horror with fantasy undertones.
In Nightworld, the sixth and final book in the Adversary Cycle, F. Paul Wilson achieves a beautiful climax to the millenia-old war between the champions of good and evil, Glaeken and Rasalom. As the days become progressively shorter because of a late-rising and early-setting sun, cries of armageddon resound around the globe. Then a 200-ft hole opens up in Central Park, each night out of which pour swarms of alien insects who devour anything and everything they can. As scientists futilely try to understand these phenomena and the world is plunged further into inescapable madness, one wizened old man must struggle to gather a group of unlikely heroes together for the final stand against the force behind the chaos--Rasalom, ancient champion of evil. In Nightworld, F. Paul Wilson manages to stitch together the previous books in the series(The Keep, The Tomb, The Touch, Reborn, and Reprisal), most of which seem to have been thought up on completely different drawing boards, into a skin-crawling page-turner. Although adding The Tomb and The Touch to the Adversary Cycle seems somewhat of an afterthought at times, when you finish Nightworld you will have nothing but fond (as well as freaky) memories of the series. I reccomend that you read the rest of the books in the series before you touch Nightworld, as it might otherwise make quite a bit less sense. Also, reading the previous books will help you develop more of an understanding of the characters, particularly Glaeken, Father Bill, and Repairman Jack. Also, if you like fantasy, the series hints several times about earth's distant past...

If you own a small or home-based business . . .
this book should be your marketing and PR bible! There are 678 pages in this book and every one is packed full of invaluable information. If you're looking for a book on attracting clients to your small or home-based business, this is the ONLY one to buy!

Really Big Bang for the Buck
I read this book cover to cover in about three days. I have used the knowledge I've gained to grow my own business. I also share the information with my accounting and consulting clients to help them grow their businesses. The book is very readable and the methods are definitely "real world". One of the many useful topics is finding a marketing strategy that works for you. Many people find cold calling an excruciating way to get new business. This book provides a wide range of marketing activities that are much less painful and more effective. If you want to grow your business, this book is a great investment. For me, it more than paid for itself within a week.

More Than a Book; its a Road Map!
I not only purchased this book for myself, but a copy for my business partner; mine was too furry with Post-Its, notes, and dog ears to let it out of my sight! I have lived with this book close at hand for the last month, and feel it has brought tremendous focus to my business development activity. It is very readable, well organized, and packed with specific tasks to speed you on your way to success. Unlike marketing and business books that are long on theory, but fall short of actions and tasks, I translated this book, chapter by chapter into a project plan to carry my company, Big Head Interactive, through the first year. A Must Have, with spare copies for gift giving!

Extraordinary
NIGHT OVER DAY OVER NIGHT is a remarkable book. The author meticulously researched events and locations in preparation for writing this convincing story. It is a fine example of precision writing. I have read this novel several times since its initial publication. Told from the first-person viewpoint, Sebastian involves the reader in the action at the SS training camp, visits home, and ultimately combat. Stark, realistic, brutal, memorable. This novel deserves to be on the "must read" list for anyone interested in World War II, or for anyone who is a fan great writing!

Simply brilliant!
I have always claimed to not be a fan of "war stories," so for ten years, I resisted my father's strong encouragements to read NIGHT OVER DAY OVER NIGHT. What a fool I was! Paul Watkins' first novel captures perfectly the anxieties we all face as we try to figure out "who we are," the backdrop of the Third Reich's waning days providing flavor for the reader as well as fragile though believed comfort for his characters. The climactic battle scenes kept me glued to the book and up way past bedtime as Sebastian Westland's world disintegrated before his eyes. NIGHT OVER DAY OVER NIGHT is a powerfully written, harrowing account of of the evils that war foists on unsuspecting youth, and should be read by everyone. Period.

a personal favorite
I've read Night Over Day Over Night dozens of times, and every time I appreciate it more. Sebastian transforms from a good natured yet slightly jaded high school student to an emotionally dead battle survivor in such a natural and believable manner, and the development in many characters is beyond that found in most novels. It always astonishes me to think that Paul Watkins was but 21 when he wrote the book. Everything about it has an authentic feel; it's hard to believe that Watkins did not live in WWII Germany. The scene between Sebastian and Breder in the woods, and the one where Sebastian is carrying the dying Schwerin on his shoulders, are two of the most memorable I've ever read.

The Story of a Soldier: Something for All Ages!
I think everyone will find something to relate to in this book! For the generations of people who lived and fought during World War II, this book will bring back memories of that intense and brave time period. For younger generations, you will experience a sense of pride and patriotism as you read about those who fought for our country. Author Ivan Mehosky makes us feel as though we really know his father, Colonel Mehosky. I could not help but think of my own grandparents as I read this wonderful narrative.

A Patriotic Success Story
As a professional educator, formerly a teacher of U.S. History and now a Principal, I found Ivan Mehosky's work a wonderful read and tribute to his father. This is the type of book, one with a personal story, which is so very useful to show students that those wars which have ensured their freedom are more than dates on a timeline or points on a map. Several times, I felt like I was part of the battle myself. The story goes much deeper than a book about war. Mr. Mehosky does an excellent job of telling the story of an era gone by but not forgotten. Being from the Reading, Pennsylvania area myself (Col. Mehosky's hometown), I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to attend a local book signing for A Story of A Soldier. It was incredible to see how the book touched so many. Old classmates, with yearbooks in hand, and neihbors from the old neihborhood showed up to greet the author and talk to him about his father, Col. Mehosky. They talked about the "good old days" long before he ever entered the Army. The stories I heard reminded me of things I had heard from my own family about the early part of the 20th century. This is a great book for anyone with a passion for that time period. Without question, this is a book for anyone who is a fan of the human spirit and the American Dream.

The Story of a US Hero by a proud son for a Grateful Nation
This book follows the military career of a man who deserves a sincere thank you, not only for his heroic actions in WWII, Korea and Vietnam but more importantly for his steadfast committment to providing leadership and superb training for the men under his command. He taught his men to think and react and without a doubt his leadership saved countless lives. At whatever rank, Col. Ed Mehoskey, an original member of H Co. 506th Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne (HBO's and Stephen Ambrose's epic Band of Brothers focused on E Co.)led by example and raised the "Bar" to heights that were attainable and necessary to prepare men for battle. War is hell but when the going got tough, the tough men under Mehosky's command got going! This true account of a soldier's military career spanning nearly 4 decades is testimony to the American Spirit. Mehosky is a great example of the "Greatest Generation" and he personally instilled in his men the desire to "Be the Best". Learn what it meant to go three up and three down and to be trained and ready for combat under any circumstance. This excellent book left me with a greater knowledge and understanding of the sacrifices and triumphs an officer in the US Army had on the men under his command while geting ready and fighting to defend the freedoms we Americans hold so dear. For any reader who wants to know more about the spirit and courage that has propelled America to become the leader of the Free World you must read this book. God Bless Col. Ed Mehosky and the men of his generation and above all else God Bless the USA.

Best Tracking Book to Be Found
This is a truly magnificent tracking book. The book has no pseudo-spiritual dribble about tracking ants across rocks or pressure points; it is full of useful information, and it is clear that the author is as genuine of an expert naturalist as they get. He shares an incredible wealth of information on how to examine and analyze the wilderness from a microcosmic level. The photography is outstanding and the descriptions of animal signs are excellent. Being a survival instructor, I have read many fine books on tracking animals and observing their signs, but I have never read one that I learned more from than this one.

My First Choice
I do a lot of tracking, both animal and human. I have read most books on the subject in print. This book is excellent for the beginner and expert and focuses on animal tracking. Rezendez helps the tracker learn both the animals track characteristics and its living habits. If I had to recommend only one book on tracking, this would be it, hands down.

This book should be the "Bible" of all novice trackers!
Paul Rezendes brings to life and makes possible the intimate experiences of wildlife interaction. This book has allowed me to track such elusive wildlife as black bear, moose, and timberwolves. As a Native American, I was pleased to read and experience the same intimate interactions with nature that my ancestors once experienced. The detailed descriptions of individual tracks and the explanations of the differences between similar tracks has proven a great assistance while on my own expeditions. This book also contains the most important element necessary for successful tracking which most fail to provide - pictures. The impressive photography clearly provides undeniable evidence of Paul Rezendes actual expertise in his field of practice. I highly recommend this book to all trackers - from novice to expert.

big bad book
...not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good.
This book is the ultimate guide to Directors new 3D features. It is pretty big and you might have to take a few weeks off to read (and understand) it all.
I only gave four stars because to me it is a little too technical. After all most Director users are not only programmers but designers too. What i have been missing is some inspirational stuff showing what the 3d features could actually be good for and how to use them in a useful way in a real project, maybe a little chapter about the basics of 3d game development, the structure of interactive 3d shop-programmes, whatever.

At last, a book devoted to Director 3D
It's very exciting that Director now does realtime 3D. Since the product is relatively new, there has been a lack of clear documentation available for the 3D aspect. I've been waiting for months for a book to be released to help with developing in Director 3D. I recently started reading this book and I thought i'd give a quick reaction to it, so others might accelerate their Dir. 3D learning curves. (I'll post another review after i've dug deeper.)
I'm more artist than programmer, with pretty basic Lingo skills. I've already quickly solved 2 problems that i was stuck on by skimming thru a few pages in this book. What a relief that is! I've also enjoyed skimming thru the movie examples on the CD and looking under the hood at functioning code. (Cut and paste is fun.)

I find Paul Catanese's writing to be flowing and precise. I've only got one book within hand's reach of my work area. This one.

Swerve

*(If you are new to director, i'd strongly recommend buying an additional 3rd party book devoted to the non-3D aspects of director.)

Excellent book on Director 3D and 3D in general
The book is an excellent introduction to using Director 3D and provides wonderfully diverse examples. I found it easy to read and the examples are clean and fun to study and experiment with. There are issues covered in this book such as camera control along the contour of a mesh that simply is not covered in any other book and even very few C/C++ 3D books. The book has a good progression from chapter to chapter and topics span a wide range of topics including collision detection, dynamic mesh generation and transformation, using video for a texture, and the creating charts and pie graphs.

A brilliant play
Required to read Henry for my AP English Language class, I came into the play with a bias. I honestly felt that it would be a boring political play. I was utterly wrong! A huge fan of Shakespeare, I found Henry V to be a formidable match for the Bard's more critically acclaimed plays, such as Hamlet and Macbeth. Henry has it all! Shakespeare's attitude toward Henry the King is certainly one of admiration. By communicating the fact that an effective monarch must have a complete understanding of the common subjects (Pistol and Bardolph and Quickly), Shakespeare sets up Henry to be the ideal Christian king. The controlled language of Henry's speeches, particularly his response to the Dauphin's idiotic insult, also glorifies Henry. I certainly recommend this play to anyone, fan of Shakespeare or not.

Excellent Publication/Version (Arden Shakespeare)
I looked long and hard (and asked many a scholar) for the "perfect" Shakespeare publication that I might purchase to study "King Henry V" (for a experiential education requirement, I had undertaken the translation of Henry V into American Sign Language). The Arden Shakespeare came highly recommended by everyone, and has lived up entirely to all its rave reviews.

I will never buy Shakespeare from another publisher. While these books may be slightly more expensive than a "mass market" edition, I believe that if you are going to take the time to read and understand Shakespeare, it is well worth the extra dollar or two. The Introduction, the images, and plethora of footnotes are irreplaceable and nearly neccessary for a full understanding of the play (for those of us who are not scholars already). The photocopy of the original Quatro text in the appendix is also very interesting.

All in all, well worth it! I recommend that you buy ALL of Shakespeare's work from Arden's critical editions.

Profoundly Brilliant!
Written by Shakespeare for Queen Elizabeth I amidst a time of Irish rebellion, Henry V more than adequately serves its intended purpose of galvanizing nationalistic fervor. It proved itself to be an unwavering and unfaltering impetus of patriotism in Shakespeare's day, during WWII, and still today it continues to resonate and reverberate this provocatively telling tale of the most gloriously revered monarch in English history.

Henry V's stirring orations prior to the victorious battles of Harfleur("Once more unto the breach") and Agincourt("We few, we happy few, we band of brothers") astonish and inspire me every time I read them. Simply amazing. Having read Henry IV Parts I&II beforehand, I was surprised Shakespeare failed to live up to his word in the Epilogue of Part II in which he promised to "continue the story, with Sir John in it." The continuing follies of the conniving Bardolph, Nym, & Pistol and their ignominious thieving prove to be somewhat of a depricating underplot which nevertheless proves to act as a succinct metaphor for King Harry's "taking" of France.

Powerful and vibrant, the character of Henry V evokes passion and unadulterated admiration through his incredible valor & strength of conviction in a time of utter despondency. It is this conviction and passion which transcends time, and moreover, the very pages that Shakespeare's words are written upon. I find it impossible to overstate the absolute and impregnable puissance of Henry V, a play which I undoubtedly rate as the obligatory cream of the crop of Shakespeare's Histories. I recommend reading Henry IV I&II prior to Henry V as well as viewing Kenneth Branagh's masterpiece film subsequent to reading the equally moving work.

My daughter's current favorite at age 4
She & I enjoy reading it aloud before bedtime. The book seemed to help her understand the context of love outside the family. My only concern is that Mr. Hatch's mood seems totally governed by outside influences, rather than him making choices about how he can present himself to the world. However, the message that you can really influence other people's mood when you are happy is a great one.

I Loved Mr. Hatch Too!
It was fun when Mr. Hatch thought someone sent him a Valentine even though the mailman sent it to the wrong address. He became really happy because he thought someone loved him. ...And since he was so happy, everybody really did love him!

This is a great Valentine's Day book because there is a lot of love in it!

Beautiful book about shared love and friendship.
This is a book about a man with seemingly no personal connections. He doesn't speak to or socialize with anyone. No one loves him because he is detached. But when a valentine package is delivered to his house with the message "somebody loves you" things begin to change. He begins to look at everyone differently - having no idea from whom the gift was given. Before you know it he has become a loving friend to many, and he is loved in return. He then finds out that the valentine package was delivered to him by mistake and returns to his old ways assuming that nobody does love him. But by this time he has made many new friends who care very much and inspire him with the message that somebody does love him after all!

This is a story that teaches that to receive love you have only to give it. A great book to share with young children.

Empire of the Sun

Amazon base price: $
Used price: $26.97
Average review score:

A harrowing coming-of-age story
While captioned a novel, J. G. Ballard's Empire of the Sun is very much a true life memoir. In this book (made into a film by Steven Spielberg), Ballard first tells the life of a boy ("Jim") in pre-Pearl Harbor Shanghai, the privileged young son of an English business executive. When the war begins, Jim and his parents are separated, and Jim survives for weeks on his own, living of the food left in his and his neighbors' abandoned mansions. Most of the book is set in the Lunghua prison camp, where Jim is forced to grow up under circumstances no boy should endure. Finally, the war ends, and he is reunited with his parents under the shadow of nascent Chinese communism. Ballard tells a compelling story, and pulls no punches. Much of what Jim experiences is shocking, and Ballard neither embellishes nor understates Jim's experiences. Flies, death, and decomposition are everywhere, as are avarice and (occasionally) kindness. This is a very different "coming of age" story, but one I thing a high-schooler would enjoy. (Query: Ballard assumes from his reader a fairly good grounding in World War II and cold war history, which I have. I understand that many young people lack such knowledge. Would such young people understand and appreciate Ballard's story and artistry? I don't know). I suspect this book will be read and recommended for many years to come.

Not what you expect
This is an account of JG Ballard's childhood in Shanghai during World War II when he was imprisoned in an internment camp away from his parents but just knowing that alone tells you nothing about the book. Yes, it takes place in WWII but that's almost irrelevant to the book, Jim is barely aware of the war as far as most people would conceive it and the entire war seems to take place mostly on the periphery . . . if it doesn't affect him directly than he doesn't care. On one level this is a nicely detailed account of life in Shanghai, especially in the beginning. Ballard is a good enough writer that he can describe such mundane events with enough flair that they take on another ambiance entirely. This becomes more pronounced as Jim winds deeper into the war itself, with the book becoming almost dream like in its quality. A lot of people I think object to the actions of Jim, which are very much what we don't expect. He's fairly self centered and makes a lot of weird rationalizations but I had no trouble understanding his POV, even if I didn't totally agree with it. He's a kid caught in something he can barely understand, so he has to break it down into something he can understand and sometimes that means making it a game and sometimes that means doing some things that most of us would interpret as cruel. That was the most interesting part of the novel for me, watching Jim trying to cope with the events around him, deal with the fact that he can barely remember his parents, with the fact that the only life he can really remember after a while are in the camp itself. With everything filtered through his perceptions the reader has to evaluate for him or herself what exactly the truth is . . . Jim's perception of some characters can change over and over, or maybe not even agree with what the character is doing, but that's because he's looking at it through the eyes of a child and by way of Jim, so is the reader as well. The white flash of the atom bomb that comes toward the end isn't even a climax, it's just another strange event in a war where everything strange is normal and for Jim it doesn't even signify the end of the war, for him the war never really seems to end. Haunting in its grim depiction of reality, this stands as one of the better books to come out about WWII simply for its personal perspective.

Page turner
My friend recommended this book to me because I'd read the color purple so she thought I'd like it. I did! The books about a young boy who is abandoned in Shanghi during world war II. The events that follow the boy through finding himself alone and to eventually, being held in a prison of war camp by the Japanese are breath-taking. Some parts of the book were a little drawn out for my liking but all in all, this is a great book for your collection.

One good man defeats terrorism
Eilart is an honest corporate salesman who unwittingly finds himself tangling with IRA terrorists, and stage-center in a controversy which could unseat the president of the United States. I liked the character of Eilart, and the pacing of the plot. Especially by the end I was furiousy turning the pages. This book has more depth than Ken Follett's, whose books used to be my favorite thrillers, and a story-line worthy of Grisham. I look forward to more by this author.

The Eilart Affair
This book was a joy for me to read. I could relate to the value system that made the story so real. The way the story evolved and developed is what I enjoyed most. The author has a great imagination and was able to bring it together for an emotional conclusion. I think this story would make a super movie. I hope Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman) could play Fred.

I hope Mr. Bergstrom keeps writing, I would enjoy reading this quality of book in the future.

A MUST READ!!
I really felt that this book was very well written because it never has a dull moment. Each time you finished one page it left you with so much suspense that you had to keep reading to see what exciting events would unfold next. The whole idea behind the scandels definitely make you wonder could this really happen in this day and time? I was intriqued to learn how terrorism could be actually be taking place right around us and how the government could so easily be covering it up. I enjoyed the clean nature that the author choose to write with so in return it can be a book that you could share with all.
