Shoah: Journey from the Ashes
In Shoah: Journey from the Ashes, Paul M. Howey and Cantor Fettman have done an in-depth historical prologue which chronicles 2,000 years of anti-Semitism. Then they have recorded Cantor Fettman's tragic Holocaust experiences (and) then they have listed current hate groups who sadly are still part of our society. This book does an excellent job of showing unless we are proactive, history will continue to repeat itself.

Shirley Goodman, M.S. Educator and Author Omaha, Nebraska

Shoah: Journey from the Ashes
"I have had the privilege of hearing Cantor Leo Fettman's story of Holocaust survival personally... As I read this book, I could hear his voice and see the pain in his eyes once again. ...I will recommend this book to counselors, educators, and those who seek insights in the personal impact of the Holocaust that transformed ordinary people into extraordinary survivors. ...I am grateful that Cantor Fettman worked through his own pain of remembering to bring us this great treasure!"

Reverend Steven E. Boes Director of the St. Augustine Indian Mission Winnebago, Nebraska

..searching for a book on the Holocaust..begin right here.
I just finished reading SHOAH: Journey from the Ashes.

For the past 25 years I have read an average of two Holocaust books per week. I have read good books, bad books, mediocre books, and some outstanding books. This book I would gladly recommend anyone read as it goes beyond the Holocaust and goes to humanity.

Cantor Fettman mixes in sociology, psychology, common sense, and his experiences taking him from faith to faith never with a loss for where G-d is in his life.

I am proud that Cantor Fettman was one of the 60 interviews that I conducted for the Spielberg Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation. He is a man that leaves an impact. He is a man who has made a difference.

This book is well written with just enough reference to the Holocaust to be a Holocaust book and at the same time this book becomes a primer on how to live your life.

I dare to dream for a moment thinking how this world would be if in each persons life a Cantor Fettman appeared. It is also leaves that void wondering how many Cantor Fettman's were murdered during the Holocaust.

This book should be required reading for everyone at any age and with any religion.

I would tell anyone searching for a book on the Holocaust to begin right here.

The Silent Miaow: A Manual for Kittens, Strays, and Homeless Cats

Heartwarming
This is a sweet book. Cat lovers will immediately recognize the traits of their favorite feline in the descriptions of kitty's charming behavioral tricks. Gallico presents these with humor from a cat's perspective, which sounds more than a little silly, but which works to the book's benefit. The Silent Miaow was written in 1964, so many of the author's remarks on human relations are quite out of date, but the endearing and manipulative way cats behave clearly hasn't changed over the years! The Silent Miaow would be a nice gift for a friend who loves cats. Read it yourself if you're feeling down -- its sweetness will certainly cheer you up.

Ever get the feeling your cat knows more than you think?
This clever book nicely matches pictures to text. The pictures tell the story of a homely abandoned kitten as it finds a family, moves in, and conquers the humans. In the text, she shares her insights into successfully running a human household with other cats. The book will appeal to anyone who has ever shared space with a cat. However, it is not for the paranoid, because it will serve to reinforce your suspicions that cats really do know more than they let on! The writing is amusing and the pictures are endearing. For cat lovers, this is a book you can come back to again and again

A wonderful, endearing book for cat and photography lovers
I first read this book as a very young child and was charmed by its beautiful feline photos and wonderful story. Almost thirty years later, it is still one of my favorite books; I'm delighted to see that it's back in print. The sophisticated black-and-white photography artistically captures the essence of cat-dom; the story (written by a cat!) is both touching and amusing. A must-have for any cat lover.

Best SAT Book on the Market
Simply the best. If you're taking the SAT, buy this book along with 10 Real SATs and you're set. This book is funny while serious in improving your SAT score. People love to look at stats: I improved from 1260 to 1460 in 11 months with the use of this book, 10 Real SATs and by taking challenging courses in school. This book is worth the $$ just for the jokes, I mean, come on...

Definately the best how-to SAT book out there!
Save yourself $ and buy this book instead of taking an SAT course. I read it about 5 months before I took the SAT and it still helped me tremendously. It's actually exciting to read, all my friends borrowed it! I got a 1380 first try, a score most of my friends didn't beat despite spending over $1,000 on a Princeton Review course. I plan to reread it before I take the SAT again in April and I'm confident I'll break the 1400 mark! Even if you think you're prepared for the SAT, this is a great resource if only for the fact that it makes studying for the SAT fun. GET THIS BOOK!

Excellent Book
This book is a great way for anyone to polish their math / verbal skills for the SAT. The lax mood of the book makes the SAT seem less formidable, and maybe even "enjoyable"(yea right). Of course, everyone feels more comfortable knowing that the authors of the book scored higher than a 1500, which is pretty good. This book doesn't waste time providing futile practice tests which fail to simulate the actual SAT. Instead, they encourage you to buy 10 Real SATs, which is really the best way to help you improve. The book contains useful tricks and even some shortcuts. The only way this book could have possible been better is by having a section which accentuated on math shortcuts, but nothing is perfect. When the new SAT comes out in 2005, alot of people are going to wish that this book is still out there for the new one. Overall, great prep book, and there's no harm in buying it -- it's cheap and useful.

A fan (if you did not guess ! )

Love in a Basket
I've just had an incredible tour of Paris. I love the city, but I never appreciated the depth of the people and their everyday life as much as when walking through the wonderful markets with the Misses Smith and Meyer. This is a total effort, not just a beautiful picture book. It is for us who appreciate the food, people and, most of all, love for each other. We get a chance to interact with people just like us. This is the stuff that gives beauty to reality.

A Valentine for Paris
Any lover of good food and great photographs will adore this book. Using over 50 Paris markets as a backdrop, recipes and pictures for wonderful cuisine bourgoise dishes are presented, as well as a plethora of historical vignettes, photographs of almost 50 cheeses, pictures of commonly encountered French seafood, and a drawing with explanation of French beef cuts, plus photos of Parisian scenes. Among the vignettes surrounding the history of Les Halles, who can forget the explanation by a turn-of-the-century father to his young daughter that all those seductive ladies lounging in the vicinity of Les Halles are "secretaries" to the local businessmen? This beautiful book is the next best thing to being in Paris on a sunny spring day with somebody you deeply love.

A Must Read For Christians and Non-Christians Alike
Paul: A Man Of Grace and Grit is an extraordinary work detailing the life of the apostle Paul. The book outlines and explains the biblical and cultural history and signifigance of the life and times of Paul in a way I have never before discovered. I cannot recommend it enough. The book presents history mixed with important lessons mixed with timely analogies. It is a must read for Christians and non-Christians alike. I guarantee that reading it will affect your outlook on life and make you feel uplifted as it did me.

Paul: A Man Of Grit And Grace
I have had few heroes in my life. This book has brought one home to me. I hung on every word. My book is filled with tabs and notes. The world of Paul is not so much different from what we live today. Searching for God and the Truth, this one book has given me new hope and reinforced the faith I am growing in. Charles Swindoll was able to blend his experience and the experience of others in the study of Paul without distorting the word of God. At the end of 22 chapters I found a new beginning to my life.

I'll never think of Paul the same way again
This is a wonderful book. I found myself staying up late so I could read "just one more chapter."

I have to admit that in the past I have had trouble with some of Paul's writings, while at the same time, his letters to the churches never fail to deepen my relationship with Christ. But,
I always tended to think of Paul as the "saint of saints" and this was very intimidating.

This book has helped me to see Paul as a real human being. I am still overwhelmed by his total faith in the grace of God, but I now have a deeper understanding of the journey he took and how he let God use him. I no longer feel that this type of faith is reserved for "the chosen few."

I appreciated Mr. Swindoll's way of showing how Paul's experiences could be applied in my life. This book is not just a traditional biography of a great man, but it has helped me see how to let God increase my faith.

Bottom Line : It does what it says it will
I didn't know about Access. NOTHING. I read this book and now I do. After reading this book I wasn't a master, but I was fluent in Access terms and had a good understanding. Easy to follow, well designed. I recommend this book to Access newcomers/beginners but will be to easy for Intermediate to Advanced users. The book even gives summaries of advanced topics so the beginner after completing the book will know where the future of his learning will take him. Great Book.

Well worth the time and money.....
As an Engineering Leader, my time is of a high commodity. I found this book to be all inclusive in helping me achieve the databases I desired in managing personnel, projects and tasks. the book is an excellent source for a novice access user in bringing them up to speed in understanding basic VBA programming and tips in creating databases. The beginning chapters are a little slow for intermediate users, but they are helpful as a "refresher" course. The remaining chapters are excellent and well laid out in understanding the material. I found that by reading the book and creating a specific database that would address my needs simultaneously was the favorable approach. Overall the book is highly recommended for novice to intermediate users. I also recommend .."Access 97 VBA programming" for any novice looking to further there knowledge. Both these books have allowed me to create databases that once were well out of my capabilities.

Very Good Introductory Book; A great value
This book is a very solid intro to Access 97. It covers most of what you would hope to be covered in a text of this depth. The examples are easy to work with and demonstrate principles clearly. The text does not come with a CD, which no doubt kept the cost so reasonable. Example files that would have been on a CD are available for download from the web site, but are not mandatory for working the book examples. One problem is that some of the example files are not correctly set up to correspond to the chapter exercises. It is a shame that there is not a Teach Yourself More... follow up text to address topics like VBA and others not mentioned. Until that time, try Beginning Access VBA Programming by Smith and Sussman as a place to go from here.

A Beautiful Bargain
This is an incredible book, a collaboration, really, featuring reproductions of the wood engravings that were created by Gustave Dore in 1875, inspired by this epic poem by Samuel Coleridge. (the editorial reviews are confusing, because they describe books by different artists) There are 42 magnificent illustrations, on 9 x 12 pages no less, for just six bucks and change. You won't find a better bargain here.

"Water, water everywhere...
And all the boards did shrink. Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink." These famous lines, like the opening lines of Coleridge's Kubla Khan, are often quoted, but I sometimes wonder if the people who quote them have read this wonderful poem. The poem is full of mystery and horror, from the Mariner stopping the wedding guest, to the incident w/ the albatros, to the gambling of Death and Death-In-Life... I could go on and on. The language is so rich, and the poet's comments make the content more clear for anyone who becomes confused. The illustrations of this edition are beautiful and definately complement the text. This is a haunting poem that you will want to read again and again. If you have not read it before, do yourself a favor and find a copy.

Beautiful woodcuts bring vivid imagery to this great poem
I have to disagree with the bad rap this poem often gets. Sure, Coleridge's 4-3-4-3 meter is simple and easily imitable, but that does not change the fact that he used the meter masterfully, that his verse is beautiful and his imagery splendid (even without the woodcuts). The story is fairly simple, though its effect is somewhat chilling. Yes, I've even heard the Mariner compared to Popeye with a dead bird around his neck. But all joking aside, this is a beautiful poem.

On the surface, this may just seem to be a simple poem by an English Romantic. But there is so much more. There is a lesson to be learned, one of respect for God's creatures and for all of creation. This is certainly a Romantic point of view, and Coleridge puts it forth very nicely in this poem.

This is a great beginning poem for novices of poetry, for beginners and for people who dislike poetry if it doesn't rhyme and have a definite rhythm. This is definitely Coleridge's best poem, one that everyone should be familiar with. This version with the woodcuts makes for a very attractive package--the illustrations add nicely to the poems overall effect.

Great read, though focuses on cold & wet climates
As the other reviews say, this is a great read for those interested in straw baling. I especially liked how the authors are balanced with their approach to straw bale: they tell you the good and the bad, and are conservative about what straw can do given its limited history. I feel much more confident knowing that they're not just trying to sell the idea, but are really attempting to spread their knowledge and experience on the subject.

I was a bit disappointed with lack of information on climates other than the cold and wet Northeast. (I'm hoping to eventually build in the hot dry San Joaquin Valley of California.) The subtitle seems to be written by an editor in an attempt to sell more copies. Unlike other construction books I've seen which weigh different weather needs across the country or the continent with descriptions and maps, this focuses on New England and Eastern Canada. This focus is fine, of course, but only if the book is initially presented as such.

No Bale Left Unturned
This book now rockets into the forefront as the most complete straw bale book. It seems pretty much to be all here: Interested in mud floors - got it; Interested in earth plaster - It's here too. All the main building subjects are covered, often exhaustively. Once one strays from the 2x4 and block foundation, into alternative building, there are by definition a lot of options. There isn't a standard set of details yet for bales, which partially accounts for the length of the book.

The authors come from the enviro alternatives camp, but they aren't romantic about it. Expect some well deserved skepticism about the virtues of Nebraska style load-bearing walls in cold climates. On the other hand they leave the decision up to you. After spending 12 pages telling you why you might not want to build load bearing walls, they spend 22 more pages telling you how to do it (not to mention the countless other pages devoted to related topics).

This book covers the subject of framed straw bale walls more completely than any other thus far. This is an important addition to the literature. While the authors are driven in this direction by the realities of snow loads that are not experienced by all, those who live in wet climates, or wish to build multi-story houses will find much of use here also.

The straw bale book we have been waiting for!
I have been designing and building straw houses for a decade now, as well as teaching others how to do it. Across that time there have been a small handful of books on straw construction, each a great contribution in its time. But now we have what I feel is the book we have been waiting for: solid information in a well written format.

The authors are experienced builders with a common sense, grounded approach. Where most of the earlier books were coming out of the desert South West, this book specifically looks at the detailing needed in the colder and wetter parts of the world.

A wonderful contribution to the growing field of natural building. I recommend this book highly.

Scariest thing i have ever read
Ok, I am in 11th grade, and I read this book in like 4th grade. I still have nighmares and flashbacks about it. It really scared me. I will not even touch the book if I ever see it. If you do buy this book for your child, I highly suggest that your child is not a fragile on or one who is even a little scared of "creatures" of the night. Ok, that's it.

Excellent Halloween book - not toooo scary!
I, an elementary school librarian, have been using this for my Halloween read a loud. I like it because - read right - its scary but not so bad as to give them nightmares. No ghosts, no witches, no gore! Even the parents don't mind! :-)

The perfect book to scare your little kindergarden pants off!
We read this in kindergarden, and some of our friends are still having nightmares about it. We loved this book because it is sooo scary! Even in seventh grade SOME of us are still shrieking at the word TAILYPO. This IS a really good book, but beware of its impact on young people, especially those with, uh, overactive imaginations. The perfect book for reading around a campfire in the middle of the woods with lots of noises and glowing eyes all around...

Well Written and Common Sense Presentation
The authors of Understanding Terrorism have done a great job with presenting complex and difficult material in a manner that is easy for all responders to understand.

This book covers all the bases and met all of my expectations. It has become a permanent fixture in my response bag should I need a ready reference. Frankly, this is perhaps the best book on the subject for emergency responders that I have seen to date. A great value for the price!

Great Source and Reference!
I was skeptical at first about another book on terrorism. After being disappointed by several other terrorism response books allegedly written for emergency planners and responders, I was very satisfied with Understanding Terrorism and Managing The Consequences.

This book is a breath of fresh air that restores my confidence that responders who have the experience and background of planning for & operating at terrorist events are sharing their expertise & knowledge.

Understanding Terrorism provides you the VITAL information you need to perform your duties as a responder as well as provides security directors & safety managers expanded knowledge on what is expected for their functional areas in times of terrorist events.

The information is provided in a cohesive manner that aids the users with easy comprehension and utility of the material. It also compiles all the needed references under one cover to make your job easier.

The approach the authors have adopted with this book is a big bonus. Frankly I am tired of books that adopt a "shotgun" approach or use theoretical [terminology] to convey the message of safe and effective response strategies; they fail to address the implementation and operational application issues effectively. THAT IS NOT THE CASE WITH UNDERSTANDING TERRORISM. This book helped me each step of the way as well as provides me with the benefit of being a "one book" planning and response reference.

Public or private sector emergency managers, responders or security officials, if you are responsible for the emergency response, Understanding Terrorism is the one book you should own, read and use.

Solid Text with Great Application for Field Response
After having to climb through so many books looking for the information I required to understand the issues and response to terrorism I came across Understanding Terrorism by Maniscalco & Christen. What a relief to find a comprehensive, cohesive and no nonsense book.

These authors have done a remarkable job with synthesizing complex data and rendering it into a discussional and informational manner easily comprehended by all emergency planners and responders. The constant reinforcement of "system" play and interoperability as well as a function rather than an agency approach lent great assistance to my team being able to immediately apply the knowledge to the crafting of our contingency response templates.

Great job by the composers, fantastic text for you or your organization!
