Physics of the Interstellar Medium

Good Introductory Text
A concise and clear introduction to the interstellar medium. Chapters 5 to 7 on radiatively excited regions and gas dynamics are particularly well written (half the book). The rest of the book is perhaps too concise to cover adequately topics such as dust properties and star formation.

Politics Indeed
Edward Koch has done a remarkable job illlustrating to the reader the true story behind politics in which he includes controversies such as the death penalty and gay rights among others. "Politics" depicts his rise and struggle in the game of politics stating that it is extremely important to understand our government and know our politics if we would like to better our surroundings; participation is key. This book was quite enjoyable to read because Edward Koch has a great sense of humor. "Politics" is not at all boring to read, you would think so because of the title, but really, trust me, it is not.

The Reality of Community Policing
Ed Reed examined the rhetoric versus the reality of community policing in Seattle BEFORE the World Trade Organization fiasco exposed it to the world. He has also got important things to say about community policing generally. This is a book that deserves a wide audience.

Excellent
A fine account of a most interesting and crucial series of Civil War battles. Stackpole treats everyone very fairly. Broad in its scope, audacious in its execution this book analyzes the Confederacy's third and final invasion of the North. A very excellent work that is well worth the time.

A Look at "Steam Locomotives of the New York Central Lines"
I'm a pretty serious New York Central RR fan, so I had to have this book for my collection. I found it to be extremely comprehensive in its coverage of the Boston & Albany and the pre-consolidation NYC. I only wish that: 1. A release date for the planned Vol. 2 would be announced, 2. More photos had been included (maybe this is an idea for a companion series), and 3. More plans were included (see previous comment). A must-read for NYC fans, from that road's last Chief Mechanical Engineer. I also own Edson's book on NYC diesels, and he seems to have a real genius for laying things out and breaking data down into smaller, more manageable chunks. All in all, it's a pretty good piece of work, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Sisters fleeing cousins.
This is the first play of a trilogy by Aeschylus (c. 525-456 B. C.), the other two being lost (Aeschylus wrote over seventy plays of which only seven are extant). It begins the story of the daughters of Danaus. The brothers Aegyptus and Danaus were descendents of Io. Aegyptus had fifty sons and Danaus had fifty daughters and the sons are determined to marry their cousins. The daughters flee to Argos, seeking sanctuary from Pelasgus, King of Argos. The play, which contains very little action, is really serving as a prologue to the other two missing members of the trilogy.

A West Pointer's 1850-1860s recollections.
This interesting autobiographical account was written by a West Point graduate of the 1850s. His experiences in the pre-Civil War west are especially informative, as not many first-hand narratives of that era have been published. His assignment after graduation from the military academy was to the New Mexico territory. There, he participated in the short Navajo war, and with vivid descriptions, tells the story well. He was wounded during the conflict and after being sent home for convelescence, tells about the most difficult choice confronting those classmates of his from the southern states in their future direction. Although Averell didn't excel at his later military career, never the less his work with the pen makes for interesting reading.

The Bible of Rheumatology - Still true?
Kelley's et. al., Textbook of Rheumatology has been considered the Bible of Rheumatology ever since its 1st edition. The 5th edition still lays claim to that honour. However, the appearance of Klippel and Dieppe's Rheumatology has effectively relegated it to a second place. Kelley's is lucid and far-reaching into areas of Rheumatology, but it is more concise, less illustrative, and harder to digest than Klippel's. Moreover, the tendency to have the same editors and authors write chapters throughout the history of the book has made the book rather stagnant, with few differences between the 4th and 5th edition. The book is rather ethnocentric in concentrating on research done in USA, largely ignoring research (and authors) from other parts of the world, while Klippel's is more cosmopolitan and has more global representation in authorship and content. For example, in the chapter on Rheumatoid Arthritis in Kelley's, it is held that the occurrence of the disease is constant in different areas of the world, while Klippel's points to evidence to the opposite of that statement. Still, Kelley's is a very useful reference textbook for the specialist rheumatologist who knows quite a bit about his subject, less so for the beginning fellow.

Great book, but not easy reading!
I wouldn't recommend this book to the beginning student of textual criticism, but it is a very well done work. Burgon died in the late 1800's, when people in general could read beyond a 5th-grade level, so the language and sentence structure used within do not yield an easy-to-read book for the modern reader. Not that that is a detriment, of course, but many readers might find reading it too much work. While not necessary, an ability to read Greek and even Latin would be helpful in getting maximimum benefit from this book.

That said, this work does an excellent job of discrediting the "revised text" that has in many circles replaced the Traditional Text of the New Testament (from whence came the King James Version of the Scriptures). The reader will also get a lesson in some of the methods scholars (and quasi-scholars) use to determine which of two variant readings is the one that the Holy Spirit insprired.
