Reveals The DuBois you Didn't Know
Most Black History fans think they have DuBois figured out. You either hate him for his haughtiness and elitism or you love his militant stands. This collection of DuBois' writings shows that the truth was somewhere in between. We see DuBois change his mind on Marcus Garvey and the elitist "Talented Tenth" idea. We see DuBois evolve from Integrationism to Black Nationalism to Communism. We basically see a man who is not afraid to change his ideas and admit his errors, a very human and complex man.

Especially recommended for students of DuBois' writings
Du Bois had many interests and writings from artistic ventures to tackling the political issues of his times: his life was filled with controversy and essays here celebrate his scholarship, examining his influence in the academic world and considering the extent of his social, political and racial insights. Especially recommended for students of DuBois' writings at the advanced high school and college levels.

Reconceptualizes African American Political Thought
When most think about Dubois, one of the first theoretical formulations that come to mind is the oft-quoted "double-consciousness." In this work, Reed's central task is to situate African American political thought squarely within the material context in which it occurs using W.E.B. Dubois as the focus for this project. Along the way Reed slices and dices Henry Louis Gates and the new black intellectuals, as well as the troublesome concept of "double consciousness" that Reed shows to be overstudied at best. Clearly among the best works of its kind to come to light in some years.

"The human soul cannot be permanently chained"
"The Journey to Freedom" series educates children about the achievements and contributions of African American leaders, inventors, educators, scientists, entrepreneurs, entertainers and sports figures. This volume tells the story of W. E. B. Du Bois, an author and teacher who lived from 1868 to 1963. Du Bois was the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard, one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), a key member of the Niagara Movement, and an advocate of Pan-Africanism. This volume covers both Du Bois achievements and his controversial positions over his long public career. Du Bois was a radical thinker on racial questions who criticized the position of Booker T. Washington that blacks should "accommodate" the racism of the white majority in exchange for economic opportunities. All of the books in this series confront the racism of the times directly. In this volume there is a grim photograph of a crowd about to lynch an African American man in Texas and another of a "This Door White Only: Colored in Rear" sign above a door in the segregated South. Students will clearly understand Du Bois in the context of his times. Don Troy presents a lot of biographical details about Du Bois, but always within the historical and social contexts of the time. You never forget that no matter how much Du Bois achieved in his distinguished career he was still a second-class citizen in his own land. Ironically, in 1963 Du Bois became a citizen of Ghana, the land from which his great-grandfather had been taken away into slavery and died on August 27th, the day before Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his "I Have A Dream" speech. This is one of the most impressive volumes in a very impressive series of books.

Enjoying the chaos of literature
Caution: Not to be read by graduate students or untenured faculty who need to stay wedded to one particular ideology in the turf wars of literary criticism. (But a solace to those who enjoy maintaining their senses of humor about those who contend they are *the objective thinkers*.)

Pechter stays, if not *above* then at least remarkably non-attached to the ideological wars into which he provides insights. For the informed outsider, his wit and insight make for an enjoyable safari into the minds (and even emotions) of those professionally involved in lit crit. and theory. What a delight to see gibes with affection instead of venom, as when Pechter refers to Richard Levin as enjoying a "richly deserved and entirely honorable reputation for stirring up trouble..." or remarks on the irony of how at the end of an acrimonious conference, *everyone* seems to express a sentiment similar to Gayle Greene's "If you really want to know, I feel beset from all sides."

Pechter's final analysis is upbeat about the possibility of actual light being shed during the heat of Theory's ideology wars. Unfortunately, the very absence of personal attacks and diatribes may leave his insights largely unread by the warring factions. For students who afford to entertain a broader perspective on Critical Practice (not feeling pressed to join a 'side' in order to succeed at the academe) Pechter offers a breath of fresh (though not sanitized) air. Enjoy!

good for teaching ESL
The book is based on a well-known jingle.
It is written in a simple pattern which ESL students can easily follow.
It is good practice in the interrogative form.
It repeats the word "cookies," so it is good for a lesson on plural nouns. If you are teaching Asian students, this is a generous bonus.

Profound Knowledge
Deming's concepts are profound, and seemed abstract enough to require some type of meat to hang on the hooks before I could understand and apply them (especially to improving safety performance). Thanks to this concise, informative, and easy to read book, I know longer feel like I'm re-arranging the deck-chairs on the Titanic or nailing poached eggs to trees. I am now empowered to persue the Deming philosophy with renewed confidence and accuracy. A must-read for business leaders, management consultants, and teams dedicated to continuous improvement. I will be providing a copy to each member of our corporate safety team.

A meticulous, articulate, and valued contribution
General William Dorsey Pender: A Military Biography is a superbly presented contribution to Civil War studies as biographer Edward Longacre relates the life and career of this Confederate officer. William Pender of North Carolina first came to prominence during the Seven Days' Battle when a number of junior Confederate officers took bold action to counter the battlefield errors of some of their better-known superiors. From id-1862 to mid-1863 he commanded a North Carolina brigade and soon came to the attention of General Robert E. Lee as he distinguished himself on a series of battlefields including Seven Pines, Gaines's Mills, Cedar Mountain, Second Manassas, Harpers Ferry, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. Pender meet his fate at Gettysburg in July of 1863 when he was felled by a wound that would eventually take his life. General William Dorsey Pender is a meticulous, articulate, and valued contribution to Civil War Studies reading lists and reference collections.
