if smart is sexy...
This is what social science should be.

First, take a topic every one is interested in and that is genuinely important. Next, get the best possible data about it -- quantitative and qualitative. Think really hard about it, taking seriously both past academic and popular writing on the subject. Then find new ways of putting things together, and teach us new things about the world. Then write, rewrite, edit and reedit until your prose is tight, precise, means exactly what you want it to mean, and is a pleasure to read.

That's what the authors of this book did. I heartily recommend this book -- you'll learn stuff, and have great material for dinner conversation for week.

A concise and well thought out guide
As a new resident of Washington D.C., this book, "Short Bike Rides: Washington D.C.," has become for my family an invaluable introduction of the area's numerous bike trails and routes. Each route is introduced with a short synopsis of its main attractions and challenges, followed by precise yet easy to follow directions. The book was obviously well researched.

The Social Organization of Sexuality: Sexual Practices in the United States

Most Comprehensive Book on Sexuality
We have adopted this title as a textbook for our Social Aspect of Human Sexuality course. In addition to our sexuality course, I use data from The Social Organization of Sexuality: Sexual Practices in the United States for my courses in Social Statistics and Research Methods. I note the importance of employing random sampling by contrasting this data to data collected found in Shere Hite's The Hite Report: A Nationwide Study of Female Sexuality (#06963).

The Social Organization of Sexuality: Sexual Practices in the United States is clearly a scholarly book. The authors also published a volume for the general public entitled: Sex in America: A Definitive Survey. This title includes nearly the same information. However, it is much more readable, but doesn't included all the scholarly details.

At this point in time, it is not likely that readers can find a more comprehensive study on human sexuality.

Superstring Theory: Volume 2, Loop Amplitudes, Anomalies and Phenomenology

Still worth the effort
As with vol I of this set of two, the material here is somewhat dated. However, while there is more to the story then is presented in this text, this text still serves an essential purpose. For example, vol II contains detailed exposition concerning anomalie cancellation and calculation of one (and higher) -loop amplitudes, which is a subject crucial to many recent developments in string theory. Similarly, this volume's expositions on compatification (orbifold, Calabi-Yau, and so forth) and lower dimensional effects will prove both instructive / illuminating for readers wishing to begin similar investigations, or who seek to augment other sources in the literature.

Again, a compelling reason for reading this text is the insights these particular authors provide. For example, the volume's discussions of physical implications from differential / algebraic geometry are more then enough reason to purchase the text.

Another triumph
Professor Edward Younkins has selected 29 articles from newspapers and journals, beginning with Novak's first break from social democracy "A Closet Capitalist Confesses" Washington Post (March 1976) and " An Underpraised and Undervalued System" (Worldview August, 1977) up to "Solidarity in a Time of Globalization." He collects these essays under five headings -- the theory of democratic capitalism; free persons and the common good; religion and morality; the responsibilities of the corporation; the global arena - and concludes with the autobiographical essay "Controversial Engagements." Younkins located these articles in well-known journals such as The Public Interest and First Things, in lesser-known journals such as Worldview, Public Opinion, Economic Affairs (London) The Journal of Ecumenical Studies, and the Dravo Review and previously unpublished material. He has included substantial essays such as "The Communitarian Individual in America," "The Silent Artillery of Communism," "The Evangelical Basis of a Social Market Economy," "The Future of Civil Society," "The Jewish and Christian Foundation of Human Dignity," "Economics as Humanism," and "The International Vocation of American Business." He also retrieved two unpublished pieces, one of which offers a new definition of social justice to overcome the powerful objections of Friedrich Hayek. Much of the periodical literature in which Novak has developed the idea of democratic capitalism over the years appears in this collection, in addition, Younkins appends a valuable bibliography listing further articles. The collection displays the development of Novak's thought on democratic capitalism from its embryonic beginnings through its later unfolding.

Why Love Lives On
I fell in love with the story of the Duke and Duchess after reading the love letters in this book. The touching and informative letters help the reader to understand the true love between these two lovers and the sacrifice Edward made in order to have his one true love. I don't know any other person who could do that. Certainly not our current Prince of Wales. This book shows that true love is still a powerful thing. Read it if you love history at all. It is more than just love letters. It is also a very good account of the way life was during the Depression.

What real scholarship should be
This is a brilliant example of good scholarship. The book is impeccably researched. Of course there are conclusions that are open to debate, but it is difficult to find an area where you could fault the writer's logic. This is the standard work on a very complex subject, and will likely remain so. If only every historian was so objective and paid so much attention to detail, think of how much we would discover. Maybe I'm being too naive.
