Great for the Firefighter/First Responder
This very information-filled book is jam packed with useful information that all firefighters/first responders will need. From Trauma, medical, Airway Management and Defibrillation to very basic Auto Extrication and Water Rescue this book is complete with all the medical knowledge that a firefighter will need.

We used this book in our first responder training. I found it very frustrating because the book didn't have to waste space for an "ambulance operations" chapter because firefighters don't need that training because we don't drive ambulances nor provide that type of patient care. There is a transition of care section which makes patient transfers easier. The last thing we need to know on the scene is the proper way to transfer care to more advanced care. The only thing this book really lacks is a firefighter's perspective. Certain operations will be done with a number of personnel, we carry at least 4 firefighters per apparatus. The defibrillation chapter makes use of fire service resources, but the others don't seem to. There should be an added chapter of taking care of common firefighter medical emergencies such as treatment for smoke inhalation and respirator hazards, hazardous materials exposure care, etc. It was good that there was an emergency rehab chapter, that is something that too few medical texts have.

There really isn't much difference between this book and the other EMT-B books on the market. There are a few extra chapters that are dedicated for firefighters. Much of the information in this book is almost word for word what is in other texts like "Emergency Care" and "Prehospital Emergency Care", it's probably that they are all made by Brady and that's why. IFSTA is a contributor so that gives this book a unique edge.

Fairly Comprehensive
A global world is subject that is often pondered and disected at any given moment in time. Ideas and opinions aren't always out of vogue like some issues. In Mansbach/Rhodes 2nd Edition of this Reader, they present the ideas of what the world is, was and should/could be.

This Reader is almost like a history lesson juxtaposed with current affairs to present concepts in international politcs. And because it was printed in 2003 (but really in 2002) there are issues that most people are familiar with that are discussed (i.e. terrorism-9/11, UN, weapons of mass destruction, ethnic/cultural/social/economic changes, etc). Numerous and well known authors in each chapter give their own view. But most importantly, there are also counter arguments that give the reader a well rounded idea of the subject. It's very important to be able to see all sides and not one that is the most popular or the most radical.

Each chapter has a short introduction (in which for some subjects, gives a kind of brief history, and better understanding) as does each article. Lots of examples and references that are clear and concise. It's difficult not to understand.

The author's are w/o bias and are willing to give all sides of the same issue--which doesn't color the subject one way or the other; they leave it to the reader to decide.

I actually loved reading each chapter and all the varied opinions made me think more about my world and how it functions. There are things that most of us are completely unaware of and dont' take the time to read and understand. With this Reader, anyone can get a brief history that they can apply to real life issues. I am a better informed person and more aware of how the system came to be and why. It's a fountain of information that can be used for first time users, as myself, and it's not difficult to follow at all.

The book is written by three veteran New York City reporters who were immersed in Koch's politics during his administration. Now, on the eve of his successor's inauguration for a second term, Koch is still in the news almost daily, making this book on his City Hall past -- what he does and doesn't want you to know -- a must for interested parties.

Brian Wayne Wells, Esquire, reviews "Michael Bakunin"
This is the definitive 1937 biography of the great anarchist revolutionary, Michael Bakunin written by the British historian E.H. Carr. The book is very effective in illuminating the chaotic life of of the secretive Bakunin.

Born into a family of the Russian nobility in 1814, Michael Bakunin rebelled and became a political activist and refugee travelling around Europe. He played an active role rabble-rousing in the streets during the revolutionay upsurges of 1848-49. He also played a leading role in the uprising in Lyons, France in 1870.

During the years in between he joined the International Working Men's Association (First International) then in a dispute with Marx was expelled from the First International. It is his conflict with Marx that makes the tenets of his anarchism come into sharp definition. The book is important not only for the history of anarchism but as a counterpoint for the study of Marxism.

"Viva Voce" provides an excellent intro to classical music
In a series of conversations with English music critic Edward Seckerson, conductor Michael Tilson Thomas shares his thinking on diverse musical matters, from the influence of technology on listening, to composers, including Mahler and Stravinsky, to his friendship with Leonard Bernstein, to his own composing. For those who don't know much about "classical" music (or think they don't like it), he provides friendly guidance, amusing anecdotes, and an unabashedly American point of view. Walt Whitman, James Brown (whom he worked with briefly in the '60s) and Steve Reich are as important to him as the European masters. Tilson Thomas' descriptions of symphonic music and the art of conducting are honest and de-mystifing. On page 195, he says, "The performers' instinct to find whatever is necessary to put the piece over is a reflection of music as a part of show business... there is still a platform, performers, an audience, lights, ushers and tickets. That's a show. Sometimes the show may have a prayerful intention which can unite people in a spiritual way. There is nothing more wonderful than the moments of silence that the audience and orchestra share together at the end of Tchaikovsky's Pathetique, or Mahler's Ninth Symphony... In this spectacle the conductor can be a kind of master of ceremonies, celebrant, cheerleader, drill sergeant, band leader..." Seckerson's questions and comments are also interesting and at times provocative. The text is accompanied by a generous number of photos of Tilson Thomas with composers, soloists, orchestras, and friends.

Broad and not shallow
This books is for administrators looking to secure an NT Server. It covers a broad base of topics with step by step explaining how to implement the topic. The book details what each setting does and explains it better than the NT resource kit. It is not as detailed as Windows NT 4.0 Security, Audit, and Control by Jumes, Cooper, et al; however, it does cover more topics.

Clear and concise -- great tips for writing in college
After looking at ten different writing texts, this one stands out as being so clear and to the point that almost anyone can understand how to craft a good, five paragraph, standard college theme. The student examples perfectly illustrate the priniples. The section on research is good. The section on punctuation and expression could be more detailed and use less jargon, but all in all, this is a user-friendly and worthwhile guide.
