THE Sherlock Holmes
To me he will always be THE Sherlock Holmes. Regardless of what other people feel about Basil Rathbone, Carelton Hobbs, Clive Merrison and even Jeremy Brett, John Gielgud will always be the perfect Sherlock Holmes. And Ralph Richardson will always be the perfect Watson. Together they eclipse the whole of their peers, simply by the way they portray the master detective and his dear friend. That is the way Sir arthur wrote them, and that is what you will hear in these stories. My only complaint is that they cannot contain every scene that Doyle wrote for each story, but such were the constraints of 1950's radio (or 1990's radio for that matter). The episodes were written with a clear understanding of drama, and acted with the skill of master performers. What stands out to me is the mutual respect that Holmes and Watson share, as opposed to the browbeating that Rathbone dished out on Nigel Bruce's Watson ("Do you have to be so dense!"). And the mysteries are darn good besides. If you want to introduce someone, particularly a young person, to the world of Holmes you can do no better than this set. These are the tapes that endeared not only Sherlock Holmes to me, but dramatic radio and the skills of John Gielgud as well. You will love them.

Sherlock Holmes with an American story line
This is one of the longest Sherlock Holmes stories (along with Hound of the Baskervilles, The Sign of Four and A Study in Scarlet). The story begins in the English countryside with the apparent murder or suicide of an American at his estate. The reader is then taken to America in flashback, where the story leads up to the events in England. Indeed, Holmes and Watson are not the central characters for a large segment of this book, which is unusual in the series.
The story concludes back in England with yet more plot twists, including the unseen hand of the evil, and longtime Holmes nemisis, Professor Moriarity.

Hardwicke IS Sherlock Holmes...and Watson...and...
What a delightful collection of Sherlock Holems tales!

For the record, Three Tales of Avarice includes "The Adventure of the Priory School," "The Red-Headed League" and "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle."

British actor Edward Hardwicke does a marvelous job assuming the role of the famous sleuth. And his portrayal of Dr. Watson is superb as well.

In fact, Hardwicke's characterizations are among the best I've ever heard. He takes on the voice and personality of each character in the stories and does so in such a compelling way that I found myself so engrossed that I nearly drove off the road listening to his performances. (And they say cell phones are a distraction!)

If you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes, I have found these readings by Hardwicke to be the best available. Unfortunately, they're going out of print as fast as I can type this review.

So if you want to hear a wonderful actor read stories from one of the world's most lauded authors, please do not hesitate a moment. Buy these delightful stories on CD as quickly as you can!

Good read for in the car
Have listened to The Speckled Band, The Naval Treaty, Case of Identity, and other stories in the Audiocassette series published by Durkin Hayes, featuring Edward Raleigh. I carry them in my glove compartment for long drives when I want to keep my mind active. Of the various British actors who have played Holmes on tape, Raleigh sounds the most convincing.

The Man Who Saved Sherlock Holmes
Chris Morley is largely forgotten now, so it might be difficult for modern readers to believe that he was once one of the best known men of letters in America. From the late 1920s to the 1940s, his columns, essays, novels and poems were widely read, and his appearances on radio were enthusiastically welcomed. Morley's most popular novel, Kitty Foyle, even made it to Hollywood. But if Morley had written nothing else than his tributes to Sherlock Holmes, it would have been enough. Indeed, it is not going to far to say that Morley is the man who single-handedly created a cult of Holmes worship (by founding the Baker Street Irregulars) which is alive and well today. While some of his Holmes work is easy to find (see his introduction to The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Doubleday), Morley's more obscure thoughts were scattered among obscure bibliographic relics. Steven Rothman has combed his considerable collection of Morley's writings and brought everything he ever wrote about Holmes into one place. This book is an excellent opportunity for anyone who knows a little about Sherlock Holmes to learn a lot about both Holmes and one of his most devout disciples. Rothman has also done an excellent job of drawing a biographical background for the reader. Morley might be forgotten, but his work about Sherlock HolmesÑÑlike the great detective himselfÑ-lives on.

semi autobiographical tale of Conan Doyle
This is the story of a young Doctor in Victorian Britain. In this collection of letters written to an american friend, Stark Munro tells of the trials and tribulations that face him as he tries to build his practice. This book gives a fascinating insight into lower middle class life in Victorian Society. It is semi autobiographical and Conan Doyle uses the novel to discus his views on Religion.

armchair sleuths will love this
I've had this old book since it first came out in '83. It's now old and falling apart and I was hoping to find a reprint...

This murder dossier brings a Sherlock Holmes mystery to life. It contains physical evidence for you to handle, which is the coolest part about it. Presented in the form of a case file, it contains letters, maps, newspaper clippings, photographs, calling cards, and other evidence like a ring interspersed with journal entries. They don't make books like this anymore. It's really fun reading.

He's more than just "Sherlock Holmes"
Although best known as the author of the "Sherlock Holmes" canon, Sir Arthur's best work can be found in his brilliant short stories. The tales in this book represent some his very best writing and feature taught, gripping stories of the mysterious, the bizarre, and the profound. Despite the fact that even the most recent of these stories is nearly 70 years old, they are so cleverly plotted and paced that they retain their ability to thrill even today. Readers who worry that the language will be too old fashioned or will require slow and careful reading should not worry: these tales are easily read, but not so easily forgotten. Try, for example, "Lot 212." This is a story about a mysterious young college student, his ancient mummy, and a series of strange crimes and attacks. Our hero confronts the villian in one of the most gripping confrontations you'll ever read in short fiction. Read these tales late at night, aloud if possible, to a willing second. You won't be disappointed!

Superb mix of great mystery and terror!
This is a great book! You can't read this book just once! I rate it a 10 because it's my favorite book of all time. I found it long ago in my mom's cellar and have kept it on my nightstand ever since. And to think she was about to throw it away! This book is divided into two main parts: Tales of Terror and Tales of Mystery. Both parts have excellent stories to interest people of all ages. I especially enjoy the tales of mystery the most. Great book to read with a cup of tea.
