Where Did I Come Up With All This Amazing Information?
Question: What famous fictional detective has been the subject of motion pictures since the very beginning of the 20th century?

Answer: Sherlock Holmes; the first Sherlock Holmes film called "Sherlock Holmes Baffled," was one minute in length and was filmed in 1900.

Question: What famous fictional detective has appeared in more movies than James Bond and Indiana Jones combined?

Answer: Sherlock Holmes, of course.

Question: What famous fictional detective has been seen on screen in almost as many disguises as Lon Chaney, "The man of a thousand faces?"

Answer: You guessed it, Sherlock Holmes.

Question: What famous fictional detective has shared an on screen ride with Sigmund Freud, foiled a Nazi plot that might have cost Britain the war, and saved the life of a United States Senator?

Answer: If you guessed Sherlock Holmes again, you're right.

Getting bored? Just a couple more.

Question: What fictional detective has been portrayed on screen by (among dozens of others) John Barrymore, Raymond Massey, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Nicol Williamson, Stewart Granger, and, of course, everyone's favorite, Basil Rathbone?

Answer: I realize this is a real tough one so I'll give you a couple of hints. His first name is Sherlock and his last name is Holmes.

Okay, one last one.

Question: What fictional detective was the father of forensic methodology in the analysis of evidence?

Surprise! Sherlock Holmes.

Where did I come up with all of this amazing information?

Why from THE FILMS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, of course.

THE FILMS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES devotes anywhere from a page to a chapter to almost every Sherlock Holmes movie known to man. Each book segment contains discussions of the film, the actors who starred, and a historical perspective discussing time, place, etc. There are enough still photographs to satisfy the most avid Sherlockian.

For the Sherlock Holmes fan and/or for the film buff, this book is a font of information. For the rest of us, it's pretty darn entertaining.

A unique, informative, original, & engaging literary study.
Fans of Conan Doyle's adventure fiction now have an important reference to consult when considering his works and settings: a survey of the Napoleonic era which influenced Doyle to create the character of one Brigadier Gerard, whose adventures ran after Holmes had been killed off in 1893. This study considers all his Napoleonic works, analyzing methods and plots alike.

The History of Spiritualism

The St. Paul of Spiritualism
Besides being the Father of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the St. Paul of Spiritualism. Having become disenchanted with the Roman Catholic faith at an early age, Doyle searched for years, before becoming a convinced Spiritualist. The evidence that convinced him was communication with his son, Kingsley, who died at the end of the great war. This information came through in seances. Doyle often remarked,"If only they could know". Doyle not only believed, he knew! This book is extremely well written, as one would expect from a writer of Doyle's distinction. The early beginnings with Swedenborg are covered, as well as important phenomena and mediums of the time. To me, as a Spiritualist minister, the greatest chapters are on the religious aspects of Spiritualism, which Doyle explains in great depth. This is a scholarly book, which I require my students to read. But it is more than worth the time, when one considers what one learns from this authority. Doyle traveled extensively in the cause of the faith and established several churches in Australia. I wish all readers the same exciting learning experience that I had when I first read this book!

Blah
This book is one of those glossy hardbound overedited editions that some cheapo company makes and sells on the discount reack at the bookstore. Not worth the price. The dimensions is about the size of a hardback, 5" wide by 8" tall, 80 short pages long. I bought it since description lists Mark Teague as an illustrator. Obviously an error since there is no way the 2 interior line drawings, or the cover art came from the wonderful artist of Mark Teague.

One of the greatest collections of the classic adventures
This beautiful suede book contains The Adventures, Memoirs, and Return of Sherlock Holmes, plus The Hound of the Baskervilles. The real attraction of this book lies in the original sketches that were created by Sidney Paget that were included. Each picture was meticulously drawn and helps to convey atmosphere of the stories. One is drawn into a world of horse-drawn carriages, gaslights, and foggy London air. Also inluded is a both moving and factual introduction plus the format of that the stories were presented in in the Stand magazine, where they were originally published. The reader is drawn into the comfortable ambience of the brilliant Sherlock Holmes, humble Watson, and the memorable cases which they solved. It is a shame that this book is no longer in print, and if any reader of this review should ever come in contact with it, I would urge that person to buy it and add it among their library. This is a true classic.

Review of Arthur Conan Doyle's Micah Clarke
Narrated by the character for whom the title is named and set in the late 1600's, Micah Clarke describes the battle of peasants against the existing king of England in the hopes that they can replace the monarch with his brother who feels he has been unjustly denied the throne. Micah Clarke, a young, innocent peasant joins forces with other peasants, among the Puritans, to fight for this pathetic duke's cause. Not a subject that would appear to be on the surface to be too exciting, in reality it is enjoyable reading. From the descriptions of the English settings, not unlike some of Thomas Hardy's relaxing paragraphs of the moors, to the gory horrors of the culminating battle, Doyle's writing keeps you turning the pages for more. At the same time, each chapter is so rich in dialogue and setting description, that you feel you can set down the book, and then pick it up the next day, thereby getting your fill of a relaxing, interesting trip into another world. As an aside, Doyle's thoughts on God and organized religion that appear in some of his other literature, are found here too. Through various character's dialogue, he's able to respectfully discuss differing "sides" of this sensitive subject, while appreciating the plight of all men, whatever their beliefs, church, political party, or economic class.
Those who have read Sherlock Holmes should attempt Arthur Conan Doyle's historical fiction, such as Micah Clarke. It's well worth it.

Classic Holmes and Watson!
This broadcast was a classic of the OLD TIME RADIO era. Re-mastered for clean audio anyone who is a fan of the Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce shows will like this well written mystery. For those new to the old radio programs, you will find this tape far superior to current books on cassette with better acting and sound effects.

Well written and exciting
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) is now chiefly remembered for his excellent Sherlock Holmes stories. However, Doyle wrote many exciting stories of adventure and mystery. This book contains four such stories.

1) In The Lost world, reporter Edward Malone accepts the challenge to explore a recently discovered South American plateau that allegedly contains dinosaurs. Teamed up with the eccentric Professor Challenger, the dubious Professor Summerlee, and the heroic Lord John Roxton, the heroes of the story find themselves immersed in an adventure beyond their wildest dreams. 2) In The Poison Belt, Malone is summoned by Professor Challenger with a cryptic note. It seems that the Earth is moving towards a poisonous section of space, and Challenger hopes that he can rescue himself and his associates-the last people left on Earth. 3) The Terror of Blue John Gap is a short diary telling the story of one man's confrontation with a monster that any modern man knows could not possibly exist. And finally, 4) The Horror of the Heights is another short diary excerpt that tells the story of a daring aviators discovery that the air also has its jungles and predators.

While somewhat dated, these stories are well written and quite exciting. They reflect a world that is now gone, but is quite interesting to read about. Overall, I must say that if you like adventure stories, then you must read this book!
