Sophie's Review
My Niece loved it. She wants to go onto reading all of the "Sopie's" series. She chose Sopie over the more recognized books like Pokeman and Mary Kate and Ashley series which she had been reading. Sophie seems to be a real person to her, a friend.

nice book series for reluctant readers
I bought these books on the recommendation of our book store. My second grader is a 'somewhat' reluctant reader yet she wanted to read chapter books. Many of the chapter book series were too difficult for her abilities but these books about Sophie are great!! And, my daughter especially enjoys reading them because they involve animals in the stories. I would like to see more chapter books like these available for young readers who are not quite up to the challenge of more difficult reading.

Highly recommend these books for any young reader!

Dr Who and Daleks equals a good story.
As with many sci fi series, Dr Who and his mechanical foes the Daleks are part of what made the show popular. Exterminate! was as hokey as British TV ever became.

This novel is a definate for Dr. Who fans, and especially those that root for the Daleks!

fair beginning
The book was not my introduction to Doctor Who but seeing the video in a catalog clarified for me just how much I had missed the Doctor. This is a good introduction to the Doctor, his principal enemy the Daleks, and the subtlly intellectual nature of the Doctor Who series. Highly recommended.

Excellent. A masterpeice of the battle between good and evil
I found this book an excellent story, one that should go down in history as a classic. It covers not only obvious evil (the Daleks), but an evil emerging that exxceeds even that of the Daleks themselves -- the 22nd century mercenaries, whose plan it is to destroy the beginning of their struggle 200 years back but actually bring it upon themselves

A fantastic new talent!
I typically read almost 100 books per year, most of them fiction. I picked this one up on a lark and am so glad I did. What a novel! From page one, I was enthralled in the story. I held my breath during the fresh approach that Ellis uses as a story-telling technique. We watch the action unfold through the eyes of the main character and we think we know what has happened. The murder takes place early on and we "see" it happen. But did we see everything? We aren't sure. In fact we aren't sure until the very last page of the book.

I was pleased to read a mystery/crime novel that wasn't all police procedural or all court-room drama. The story is fleshed out very nicely, and I found the characters to be multi-dimensional. There are several sub-plots to the story but they all relate to the main theme and serve to push the experience forward. And most importantly, I really cared what happened to the characters.

I am looking forward to Mr. Nellis' next work with great anticipation. It will be hard to top this one but it will be fun trying.

You can't put this spellbinding story down....
In this ingenious first novel, David Ellis tells the story in this psychological legal thriller through commentary by the main character, Marty Kalish, an investment banker. Kalish, an up-and-comer in a prestigious firm, tells us his story in real time and flashbacks of a love affair with married socialite Rachel Reinhardt. Early in the novel, we learn that Marty killed her surgeon husband who was in the process of beating Rachel. Or what did happen? Marty proceeds to build alibis, ditch evidence but is still arrested for the murder despite the lack of a body or any physical evidence connecting him to the murder scene.

Through the preparation for the trial, we learn more about Marty whose life was focused on succeeding in business to build up personal wealth. Except for a close relationship to his nephew, Marty has few redeeming relationships in his life. You do build a strange kinship with him in his struggle to build a defense and in his reactions to events with his former lover.

The most spellbinding part of this novel is that as it proceeds, Marty's exposition of what really happened keeps changing....This baffles both the defense lawyers and the reader and when the final solution unwinds in the last pages, you may be surprised. However unlike other surprise endings this one ends in a very satisfying way, with ends tied up very logically.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast paced novel and look forward to future legal thrillers by Mr. Ellis.

Move over John Grisham & make way for David Ellis!
From the first page I was hooked and couldn't put it down. I'm a big fan of legal thrillers and "Line of Vision" is one of the best I've read in a long time. David Ellis tells a great story that's full of twists and turns and you can't guess what will happen next. I look forward to his next book. If you want to read a great book then buy "Line of Vision." It's a definite MUST READ!

Especially good as background to the movie "Ali"
While I enjoyed the movie "Ali" very much, its narrative drive does get a bit foggy at times. This is an excellent book that covers the times in which Ali grew up and effectively uses the differences between Patterson, Liston, and Ali as a way of illustrating the diverse atmosphere of race relations in America in the forties, fifties, and especially the sixties. The author gives us important insight into why Ali is so special as an athlete and as a cultural icon. He shows us not only his physical powers, but also his inner strength and resolve. This is all shown without glossing over Ali's weaknesses and failings.

However, Ali's weaknesses and failings are simply part of the human condition. His desire to be a force for good in this world, to help others, and above all, to be free, are inspiring to read about and to contemplate. That he was able to remain true to himself and his beliefs in the face of incredible pressure from all sides is proof of his historical worth.

This is a book worth reading and especially now as background to the movie "Ali". There are also wonderful pictures that show how remarkable Ali really was in his prime.

The Greatest
David Remnick's King of the World conveys the complexity of the man Muhammad Ali, both outspoken and tender, as it traces his early years as a young aspiring boxer and the events surrounding his first heavyweight championship. The book provides an inside look at the boxing establishment in the 1950s and 1960s and how it exploited and used young African American boxers, among them Liston and Patterson. Ali is unique among the boxers of that era, sustained by a strong sense of self and purpose. I was particularly intrigued by the description of Ali's religious journey and by the inner peace that characterizes him today. This book portrays a slice of American life, exposing the beauty of one human being, the drama of his life, and the racism that could have destroyed him but did not. Read this book and enjoy it!

Ali at the height of his powers...
Remnick is smart enough not to contribute just another Ali biography to the shelves, and instead focuses his efforts on Ali 1960 - 1965...from his post-Olympic days through to the second fight with Liston. These are the years when Ali became Ali...the champ at the height of his powers.

But there's a special bonus in this book - a good portion of it deals with Sonny Liston. You talk about your seminal 20th Century characters. They don't get any more interesting than this guy: the abused son of a sharecropper, long stretches of imprisonment, a fight career directed by mob interests, a violent death. In short, a writer's dream. Remnick brings Liston together with Floyd Patterson (and you'll never find a greater constrast) and walks you through these two battles before turning his attention to Ali. Thus, you get a full portrait of Liston prior to encountering the force of nature that was then Cassius Clay.

The effect is a curious sympathy that you have for Liston as he enters the maelstrom developing around Ali. In most retellings, Liston is cast as the personification of evil. Remnick made me see him in a different light.

My advice for a great Ali study program:

1. Watch 'When We Were Kings' [Best documentary ever]

2. Read 'The Fight' by Norman Mailer

3. Read 'King of the World'

4. Buy any book featuring Howard Bingham's photography of Ali.

Great for beginners and for those needing a refresher course
I found the book to be informative enough for both beginner and intermediate fisherman (and women). With both picture and text representations to easily figure out basic concepts as well as tried and true methods for fishing.

Great introduction for a rookie!
I picked this one up a few summers ago since I didn't have much genuine fishing experience at all. This book helped me get up to speed on all facets of freshwater fishing and the knowledge I've gained through it has provided a great deal of enjoyment out on the water since then.

Great Book for the Beginner
This is a wonderful book for either the beginner. You will learn how to fish, what to fish for and what tackle you will need to take along. It does not go into any great depth on any topic but this is not what the book is designed for. It is an introductory text and a solid overview. A bonus is the beautiful photography!
