An Enjoyable Excursion to the Wetlands of the Chesapeake Bay
I would recommend Days Afield to anyone interested in the natural environment, and especially students and educators studying the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay region. The text is easy to read and follow, and personalizes the author's scientific endeavors in the region, as an employee first of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, then later the EPA, as an instructor for the USDA's Graduate School, and also as a concerned citizen and dedicated naturalist.

In Chapter 1, the author assumes the role of instructor, and takes the reader on a composite of one of his many overnight field trips down the Delmarva peninsula. The reader follows along as the trip begins in the freshwater marshes of the Choptank River in Maryland, moves on to Watts Creek in Delaware, then returns to the deciduous swamps of the Nanticoke River in Maryland. On day two, the trip moves to the marshes of Chincoteague in Virginia, onward to the Assateague impoundments and wash flats, and concludes with the dunes, beach, and ocean.

The remaining chapters detail the natural environment of freshwater, brackish, and salt marshes; the Pocomoke and Nanticoke Rivers; Delmarva potholes; and several Western Shore streams. The book also incorporates a fair amount of botanical exploits, some in the form of excerpts from the author's nature journals, which will be enjoyed by anyone with such interests.

The valuable scientific information contained in this book is conveyed in a reader-friendly manner. The language is very descriptive, enabling one to visualize while reading. The book also contains a number of personal anecdotes that make the text fun to read.

The many lists and tables throughout the text, as well as the comprehensive "Literature Cited" section and detailed indexes of plant and animal scientific and common names that appear at the end of the book should be especially useful to the scientific-minded and studious.

Breaks new ground
I enjoyed this book because it breaks new ground in terms of Book of Mormon scholarship. Most scholarly works pertaining to the Book of Mormon fall into two categories (1)those which support its historicity as an ancient document, versus (2)those which relegate it to religious fiction. This work focuses on the meaning of Book of Mormon passages by intrepeting the rhetorical forms and narratives found within the book. Skeptics who read this book may find themselves intrigued by the sophisticated narrative styles of the Book of Mormon as elucidated by Mr. Thomas. Believers, on the other hand, may find the resemblence of many of the narratives to King James Version counterparts unsettling. For those seeking a confirmation of their belief of disbelief, look elsewhere. This work shows that the Book of Mormon itself, whether historical or not, is a "good read". The Book of Mormon, like its originator, Joseph Smith, is difficult to "pigeon-hole" and those who read this book will understand why.

A great source of suggestions
This book is by far the best trail guide I've ever used. (a) The directions to the trailhead are accurate to the tenth of a mile; (b) the directions on the trail are also very accurate; (c) each trail description has its own topo map; (d) the trails feature what the book says they'll feature; (e) the trails are fun!

The trail lengths in the book vary between 1-hour hikes to all-day affairs, with plenty of all types; also, the directions usually suggest other places to go or variations to shorter or lengthen the hike.

If you live in Pittsburgh or the area, buy this book.

Loved everything about it
I grew up in Milton, N. C. and my father was Mayor there for 16 years. He introduced me to Tom Day furniture when I was a child. I have several pieces and value them highly. A copy of your book is on the coffee table in my living room and I prize it. I am so happy that you wrote this book, because I had told my children for years how valuable the furniture was and purchased a copy of your book for each of them. The beauty of his furniture and the history behind it is expressed well in your book. Thank you.

Daily Food for a Parent's Soul!
As a busy parent, embracing a business, family and a personal life, I have grown to cherish the daily grounding I receive from "Raising Children One Day at a Time." The affirming language and thought-provoking topics leave me with opportunities to examine my relationship with my children and even the beliefs I've developed from my own parents.

I often struggle with the time to sit down and become inspired by a book. The meditation-a-day style in which this book is written allows me to explore topics like forgiveness, compassion and honesty in one page. It then leaves me with an affirmation related to the topic. This affirmation usually sticks with me throughout the day. In the spirit of how I've discovered most things work, I usually absorb the perfect message that I'll access later in the day, usually in the middle of a challenging situation.

I realize that there is no perfect parenting style and there are no perfect parents. What I do know is that we can each focus our efforts on the gift we have as adults and the treasure we hold in reaching the essence of our children. It's not about pacifying them with material objects, it's about our everyday validation of their feelings and individuality that helps them succeed as well-balanced adults. In a world that sometimes feels incredibly imbalanced, it's more important than ever to uphold this belief.

As a parent and a parent educator, I recommend Thomas Wright's book as a daily reminder of the possibilities to nurture our children's spirits and meet them where we are all one - in our hearts.

A life changer
I attended a week long retreat where we used this book as a guide. I am not a very religious person at all, but this book changed my life. Merton challenges us to die to our false selves, to open our hearts to God and to accept contemplation of the mystery of God and his creations as the center of our lives. As an introduction to Merton and as a daily spiritual guide, this book is priceless.

Wonderfully written Mormon Scholarship
Thomas is an insightful gospel scholar, but also a lyrical writer. I found her book a delight to read. Thomas earned a Ph.D in early Christian history and was a professor of ancient scripture at BYU until a calling to serve in Argentina with her husband as a Mission President. Reviews have been especially strong. A reviewer for the Association of Mormon Letters wrote: "I expected a sort of schmaltzy, feel-good women's book . . . However, I found this book to be completely different from my expectations -- it is thoughtfully written and gives many new doctrinal insights. Thomas uses wonderful quotes from church authorities to substantiate her ideas, and offers many fresh perspectives into frequently discussed topics. . .
I definitely recommend this book -- I didn't find it to be the "light" reading that I expected, but instead discovered that it was "heavy" with insightful ideas for coping with the struggles of temporal life." (Jana Remy). BYU English Professor Richard Cracroft calls it a soul-satisfying book, adding: "Reminding us in skillful prose "that we came down to a fallen world to experience deliverance from it," she points out that our many mortal burdens may be lightened by faith in a God who is in charge and "will bring to our attention that which it is necessary for us to know when we need to know it."("'High Time to Awake': LDS Books That Awaken the Soul," Brigham Young Magazine, Fall 1997).

THIS IS NOT A COLORING BOOK
"Tom Brown's School Days"?, That's junenile fiction. That's a kid running down a merry lane in England with a satchel on his back, right? So wrong. How could this classic piece of little literature have escaped my attention? A stunning book about a boy's life in boarding school in mid 19th Century England, it tells it's adolescence tale with all the discipline of a Cub Scout Manual and whimsy of a comic book. Author Hughes frequently stops the action and intercedes on behalf of himself, commenting on the progress of the story as a teacher might. His defense of boys boxing with hard fists and fractured skulls is so socially incorrect it becomes amusing in it's conviction. Maybe skulls were harder then. A good knock-a-round is good for a boy. But school-yard fights aside, this is an adult piece of classic literature with a deeply moral narrative and a devoted sense of well-being. In it's second century of publication, it is a breath of fresh air.
