A Look at (and into) Church of Jesus Christ
This overview book expounds many of the doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, along the line of "Gospel Principles," and is a very good read, considering Elder Widtsoe was an emigrant form Norway. He covers the basics, but as President Hinckley has said, we learn by repetition. For those who are a fan of Widtsoe, this is an essential addition to their library.

The only drawback being that it is was designed for used in priesthood meetings, so it is not designed for non-Saints. For anyone interesting in "first contact" with the Latter-day Saints, I would recommend reading "The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ," or "Standing for Something" by Gordon B. Hinckley, the current world leader of the Church. Don't drink below the horses, including myself!

It should be noted that Brother Widtsoe comes from the point of view of a chemist and describes our theology in terms of rationality and a science. C. S. Lewis warned about "Christianity And," (Screwtape Letters, chapter 25) such as "Christianity and Pacifism," or "Christianity and Vegetarianism," the problem being that we are diluting the Gospel and rewriting it in the light of our own hobbies or profession.

True, our theology is rational and can stand the scrutiny of a Thomas Aquinas or a Jesse Ventura, but it is not the product of a test-tube or a syllogism. In other words, Joseph Smith didn't get our religion from re-shuffling verses of the bible, or just deep thinking or pondering, but he got revelations. He said, "I have got all the truth which the Christian world possessed, and an independent revelation in the bargain, and God will bear me off triumphant." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 376)

Despite this one point, would recommend this book for a new member learning, a non-member curious, or an old member wanting to review basics. C. S. Lewis also said that we should alternate between reading old books, and new books, since the old ones have stood the test of time, whereas the new books, such as "Believing Christ," or John Bytheway books are still on trial. I'm not saying the are bad, but that there is a verdict of history associated with "Jesus the Christ," or "Mormon Doctrine" that these striplings do not yet have.

This book converted my father
This is an unusual review, as I have not read the book. But I noted that no-one else has reviewed it, so somebody has to say something. My father was found by LDS missionaries in 1961. He has a great love of science, and naturally had many questions. Someone gave him a copy of this book, and he was convinced. He has a rational answer to most questions, and this book shaped his attitudes. I have not read the book, but it has indirectly defined my life and the lives of others.

Recollections of the Last Days of Shelley and Byron

A RARE FIRSTHAND ACCOUNT
It has been a favorite pastime of academic biographers of both Shelley and Byron to deride Trelawny. This should suprise nobody. To begin with, with few exceptions, one of the primary qualifications of being a full-fledged academic is delight in derision, especially in derision of those who have firsthand knowledge of the subjects they have spent hours in the stacks on University libraries to gain, perhaps, one mote of additional information.-The common criticism of Trelawny is that he was "naive"-By this they mean that his gives a simple, straightforward account of the time he spent with the two great poets without any ponderous theories to bog him down.-Trelawny first admired Byron, but quickly became disillusioned with his cynicism and became a lifelong admirer of Shelley, so much so that he remarked thus, "As a general rule, threfore, it is wise to avoid writers whose works amuse or delight you, for when you see them they will delight you no more. Shelley was a grand exception to this rule. To form a just idea of his poetry, you should have witnessed his daily life; his words and actions best illustrated his writings." After Shelley's death, he continues to follow Byron on his misadventures until his death. The book is a treat in that it is a delight to read, with page-turning accounts of his roistering times with two great men who shaped our literary world.-Not one footnote! He was there!

The Lives and Deaths of Shelley and Byron
If you're interested in the life of Edward John Trelawny, you'll have to look elsewhere. Suffice it to say that Tre' (as his friends knew him) was a privateer, a scoundrel, a lover of poetry, a freedom-fighter and a loyal friend of the most prolific literary talents of the romantic period. 'The Last Days of Shelley and Byron' is an account, not of Trelawny's extraordinary life & adventures, but of the two men that helped make that life so extraordinary. In his own words, he tells of the secret lives of Byron, Claire Clairmont and the Shelley's, their romp through sunny Italy and the tragic death of Percy off the coast of Spezzia. The tale continues as Tre' follows Byron to the civil wars of Greece, where Byron too dies. To his credit, though, it is never "Trlawny's tale", but "Byron and Shelley's tale" as told by Trelawny. It is a deep, insightful book that shows the poets as only a close friend could. Yet throughout, one can not help but love Trelawny himself: the man who supported the impoverished Mary Shelley to her dying day... the man who bought a slave for $10,000 only to set him free... the man who reached into the embers of Shelly's pyre, withdrawing his heart. If you love the poetry of Byron and Shelley & have even a passing interest in the men behind the legends, then Trelawny's memoirs are a must-read.

Fantastic book
I find this book extremely useful as a reference tool, as well as an entertaining read. In addition to reporting daily happenings of the Reds throughout their storied past, Rhodes and Snyder sprinkle insightful and entertaining essays throughout the book. RedLeg Journal is the prized possession of my Reds library.

For the true Red's fan
Before I began reading this book I considered myself an exceptional Reds fan. After finishing this book, I realize that I have forgotten more about my beloved Reds than I can remember. This is an excellant book, and I highly recomend it to all Reds fans or baseball fan everywhere. Greg Rhodes and John Snyder have written great books about the Reds before, but I truly believe that they have saved the best for last. It was sad when I finished the book, I can't wait to see what they write next.

A terrific Tale
I liked this book because in the first couple of chapters they found all of the clues. The middle of the book they got closer to finding the skeleton. In the end,the kids discover who took the skeleton and all was well.

loved it!
My son, who is 6, sat down and read the entire book before bed one night. I was impressed that it held his interest so thoroughly! Highly recommended...he asked me to buy him some more books from the series.

A Londoner in Texas
My Husband and I visited Houston, San Antonio & Austin, we only had a couple of weeks in which to fit in as much as we could. This book was a brilliant way to get the most from a short time. It helped us to enjoy our visit to the full. We hope to visit more of the USA and shall certainly use this type of book again.

A fun way to plan a one day or weekend vacation!
I really enjoyed using Day Trips from San Antonio and Austin to plan several recent weekend excursions. I found the book very helpful and used it to plan a trip to Corpus Christi and another to the Hill Country. Even though I have lived in this area for over 20 years, I found many hidden treasures thanks to this guide!

An excellent and practical guide.
I have found this book very useful both in the field and in the museum. It represents an excellent feat of practical scholarship by Bonaccorso, with good keys, locality information (with maps), reference to specific museum specimens, and external measurements for all species from PNG, including the provinces in the Bismarcks and northern Solomons. It is not only a terrific synthesis of what is known of bat biology in the country, but also offers a large store of new information. Also extremely handy are the comprehensive gazetteer at the end with lat/long coordinates and the good bibliography. Fiona Reid's excellent color illustrations round out the guide.

Stand At the Cross and Be Changed
This is a fantastic book to draw you right to Calvary. It places you at the scene and you are humbled by the experience of the Savior on behalf your freedom. I was trememdously blessed. This book in combination with Max Lucado's "He Choose the Nails" will give you a "first love" for Jesus Christ, and if you have once loved Him you will certainly love Him anew after reading this. I have lent this book to others and each and everyone that has borrowed it has been secured in the care of their loving Savior, Jesus Christ.

One of best books I've read in '97
This book touched my heart and made me realize how Godly our lives should be. It takes each one of the people who witnessed the crucifixion and analizes their thoughts during that experience. It was an eye-opening account that I had never thought of before. It can touch the life of anyone who takes the time to read it. I'll be buying several copies for my family.

A wonderful book on many levels ... I could not put it down
This was an excellent read and a very interesting book. It was so easy to get wrapped up in the characters and be transported into this true experience. A great read for anyone interested in WW2 history, dealing with hardships, relationships, and romance. Follow John on his journey of self discovery and see the perserverance of love from peacetime to D-Day and beyond. A true love story with a dramatic backround. Hidden love blossoms as does the war, then John must hide some of his involvement in the war from his growing family. It was hard to stay away from the book once I got it started. Enjoy!

A G.I. and his wife's experiences from WWII and D-Day
Reading some of the actual letters written some 60 years ago shares the emotion and reality of this struggle with us. John writes his letters back home to his wife Mary (sometimes 3/day) with such attention to detail and candid humor, never thinking someday they would be published. He sees himself as just another G.I., but his story is absolutely inspiring. Jane Hagedorn does a wonderful job preserving and presenting this unique perspective into one of the world's most historic events. Reading this book has made me feel proud of my grandparents and cheerish the relationship I have with my own wife.

Yahweh Was Not Alone
Almost anyone reading this review knows that Yahweh was not the only deity in the Ancient Near East. However, if you are not Mark S. Smith, you probably cannot describe the relationship between Yahweh and these other gods and goddesses. This is what John Day's book is all about.

In regards to El, Day finds that Yahhweh and El were originally separate deities. El is portrayed in the Ugaritic texts as benevolent whereas Yahweh is sometimes a warrior, and El is not a storm god whereas Yahweh is. Though they were different, El did have an influence on Yahweh. Yahweh sometimes appears as aged and wise.

Of course El is not the only deity considered by Day. Yahweh's relationships to Baal, Asherah, Astarte, and Anat, the Sun, the Moon, and Lucifer, Mot, Resheph, Molech, and the Rephaim are all considered. Day concludes with a chapter on the rise of monotheism.

_Yahweh_ is an erudite book whose author did not write in a short period of time but who spent 25 years collecting sources. As such this book is worthy reading for *anyone* who
is interested in the religion of the ANE outside of the Bible.

Superb commentary on the impact of Canaanite polytheism
John Day's Yahweh And The Gods And Goddesses Of Canaan is impressive, scholarly, the product of meticulous research, and an essential, core title for any serious personal, professional, or academic reference collection or reading list on the subject of Canaanite religion and mythology on the development of Israel and the Old Testament literature. Day examines in detail the relationship between the Yahweh and the leading gods of Canaan including El, Baal, Asherah, Astarte, Anat, the astral deities (Sun, Moon, Lucifer), and the underworld deities (Mot, Resheph, Molech, the Rephaim). Of special note is Day's superb commentary on the impact of Canaanite polytheism on the development of Israelite monotheism. Very highly recommended.

Not what I expected
They tried to squeeze too big of a state into too small of a book. Detail is not on par with other atlases in this series. Should have been divided into an east and west set.

Mediocre Atlas
Overall, this wasnt quite what I was hoping for. It was less than extremely informative, though some parts I found helpful. My advice: look somewhere else.
