LEAVES YOU WANTING MORE
Robert Kennedy was my very first hero as a child. He was certainly the man for everyone; he was the voice of many.

This delightful book provides some personal insights regarding the man's character and political make up. Personal quotes from letters, documents and people who knew him create a strong sense of the man he was.

It is a shame this book is out of print because it would be such a welcome addition to any library of Robert Kennedy. The author not only treats him with respect; he views him with an affectionate eye and an almost sympathetic awe.

Robert Kennedy was indeed an awe-inspiring person. Diligence was a trait that marked him his entire life. Mildly dyslexic as a boy, he would, by adult life become well versed in classic literature. Acrophobic his entire life, he would, in 1965 climb a previously unscaled mountain in Canada with two professional climbers out of love for his slain brother, the late President. This single act is very inspirational because he tabled his biggest fear and was able to act out of love. From all accounts, this man felt displaced among his older, more outgoing siblings. His was the classic "shouting to be heard" story. In adult life, his voice would become the voice of many; his voice would be one readily and eagerly listened to and taken very seriously.

His untimely death in 1968 leaves a painful void in history; one can never help wondering what this at core good, committed and compassionate and very driven man would have accomplished had he won the 1968 Presidential Election.

One of the best books about Bobby Kennedy written
I have read many books about Robert Kennedy in the past 20+ years and found this book to be one of the most personal and enjoyable biographies of Bobby. The author has access to many papers and people not previously quoted. While other books take more of a historical look at Bobby, this book is more personal. The reader will feel as if they know Bobby, which makes the ending all the more painful. It was a fairly quick read because I could hardly put the book down.

Mandatory reading for all!
This little gem was sent to me by my cousin who is a research scientist at Mayo Clinic. I am eternally grateful! Each of my Environmental Science and Biology 1 students will now be reading it as part of their course work. Milbrath cuts to the chase in a dialogue that is easily understood by the layman. It is rather ironic -in the 1800's Chief Seattle spoke of "the end of living - the beginning of survival" ...Rachel Carson.....Lester Milbrath.... are we never going to hear the words and exercise the right? I would encourage all science teachers to make this book required reading! As Milbrath says, "Nature, life systems, and society are one; they have a common fate." Let's be eager to learn this TODAY! Marcia Balmut Ward Graham High School - Env. Sci. St. Paris, Ohio

Milbrath's informed common sense cuts through complexity
I've read a number of books that purport to clearly explain the ins and outs of environmentalism, but none come close to this little Socratic dialogue. Using a format of questions and answers with his neighbor, Milbrath (a professor at SUNY and longtime philosopher of environmental sanity) takes a leap beyond both strident rhetoric and turgid college text writing to provide a major public service. If this were published by a mainstream publisher, it'd be on the bestseller list.

A must for those interested in understanding suicide
This landmark volume honors the 100th anniversary of the publication of Emile Durkheim's milestone book, Le Suicide, often described as one of the three most important works ever written in the social sciences. Lester and the 16 contributors evaluate and reassess the great French sociologist's contributions to social and behavioral science in the light of present-day knowledge and assumptions. Readers who wonder whether Durkheim is still relevant today, whether his work has stood the test of time, will not want to miss this centennial treasury.

Excellent for classroom math teachers and bored students!
This book has been a God-send for those students who finish their work early and they say they have nothing to do. I keep a bulletin board up all the time and change out the puzzles weekly. Of course, plexers are right there in the middle of the "game" bulletin board!! This is a must buy.

It will endlessly amaze you!
I first saw the work of this super talented photographer in the wee hours of August 20th, 2000 outside Palais du Luxembourg in Paris. I was so fascinated by the colors, the angles, the beauty, and the emotions conveyed that I pledged to get a copy of the book as soon as I returned to the US. The pictures portray everyday places and people that seem out of this world when viewed through the lens of Arthus-Bertrand. The photographer and his staff really did their homework when putting together the captions that accompany the pictures. They have gathered information on geography, history, ecology, anthropology, economics, sociology, politics, and popular culture to describe the sites, hence increasing our awareness of our precious and wondrous yet fragile world. Earth from Above will never make it to my bookshelf because it's so fascinating that I keep it out on my living room table to share the wonder!

The state of planet Earth
This book is a jewel. In my opinion, everyone should have a copy of this book at home.
I first saw Yann Arthus Bertrand work during an outdoor exhibit in Paris. I was fascinated with the photos, and the next day I ran to buy the book (although some people to whom I have recommended it find it rather expensive).
Certainly, the photos are sensational, but that is hardly the point. Yann is a true citizen of the world, and represents globalisation in its 'kindest' -and most 'useful' form, if I'm allowed the expression.
In this book, Yann Arthus shows us that earth is sick. Whether it is the Amazon rainforests, Alaska, Africa or Australia, clear signs of decomposition appear in the photos. This book is a waking call for many of us, however, at the same time it reminds us how beautiful is everything around us, and how rich is this planet we live in.

Soak in a Book Well Worth Every Cent (it sells itself)
I saw this amazing exhibit, "La Terre Vue Du Ciel", of Yann Arthus-Bertrand's in the Jardin du Luxembourg Senat when I was in Paris a few weeks ago. The exhibit included much larger-than poster-sized photos that are some of the same photos contained in the book. They were spectacular and breath-taking. Stunning really. But if you can't afford to go to Paris, or if you can't get a hold of a poster of his work, this book is a fantastic collection of awesome, thoughtful, inspiring, thought-provoking, and humanistic usually unseen images taken from above Earth, that have an incredible aesthetic beauty. I can't recommend this book more highly. I was going to purchase 3-4 of them myself for me and my family and friends. However, I waited to get back to the US before doing so since they are large and very heavy due to the high-quality paper the photos are printed on. I was sorry they would not fit in my luggage as I had wished to stare at the photos for many hours on the plane trip home. Many kudos to Yann Arthus-Bertrand for an outstanding artistic work! Bravo! I hope to see another exhibit by this talented photographer in Paris or the U.S. in the near future.

A Basic Understanding of Cars
This book contains very basic material on the operation of the car; it appears to be a decent read for teenagers looking to grasp the basic; but the more mature readers will find this very shallow. The text contains the fundaments of auto mechanics; it is split into seven chapters; and each chapter describes a major automotive system. It has a test section at the end of each chapter to gauge how much you have learned. This book does not cover details on 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines; how the engine starts spinning after turning the ignition etc.

I must admit that it was enertaining reading this books with all the descriptive pictures.

Great for all skill levels
As an automotive enthusiast, I'm often called upon to describe the mechanical inner workings of cars. Newton's book takes on some very complex automotive relationships, but expresses them in a way that is clear, even for the uninitiated. It's a great family reference book that should be kept nearby, especially for those who have teenagers of driving ages. The book helps to underscore the importance (and necessity) of maintaining such mundane tasks as checking and refilling the engine oil. A volume II would be nice for the computer controlled functions in a car such as tuned-port injection, speed density and mass air flow systems. Keep up the good work, Newton.

Very Easy To Read
How Cars Works is refined simplicity. I work for a major Auto Parts chain and when I get new employees, the first day they read this book. Just from two hours, an average "Joe" off the street can get the feel for how a car works. This book is well illustrated to fit the text. Granted, this book does not go deep into any specifics, but gives general information on all subjects such as Engine (top and bottom end), brakes, cooling system, chassis, and much more. I would recommend this book to any new drivers as well as anyone wanting to know more about cars.
