Karl's Glaring Mistake...
After having approached the economic arguments against socialism (and its subordinate -isms like Marx-, Commun-, Naz-, Lenin-, Mao-, etc.) from the perspectives of Adam Smith, Ludwig von Mises, Thomas Sowell, and most especially Friedrich Hayek, it didn't take much to be convinced that Marx was, well, just plain wrong. We have the empirical evidence of something like 80 years of actual practice to point to, to assess, and from which to draw conclusions.

Not until I read Prof. Kreeft's work did I come to comprehend the more important question: *why Marx was wrong*. Socialism was not just hampered by a flawed execution ("everyone" says that Russia should not have been the first nation to try socialism), but fundamentally crippled by a flawed premise. And thereby fated to fail.

I won't give the lesson away - you'll enjoy getting there yourself. I will say, though, that if Marx had been right, our world would be a much more horrifying place than any Matrix-like "Dis-topia" that Hollywood could contrive.

This is an excellent action-packed adventure
I really like this book because it's a Christian adventure.I like mysteries and adventures, but I could never find a good mystery or adventure book that was Christian. When I found this book, I knew that this was exactly what I was looking for. The main kids are Mark and Penny Daring and their friend David Curtis. These teenagers are being chased by the KGB and they don't know why. While trying to have a peaceful time birdwatching on the beach, they find themselves in the middle of a drug war. Separated and trapped between the KGB and two rival drug gangs, the teens don't know what to do. You will have to read this book to see what I mean and find out happens. This truly is a "daring" adventure.

Bela Lugosi returns from the Grave....AGAIN!
I read "Never Cross a Vampire" almost ten years ago and I enjoyed the endearing portrait of Bela Lugosi. The book also features a cameo by Boris Karloff and does not shrink from his rivalry with Lugosi. It is fun to read how a "B-Movie Star Villain" can save the day.

Also, the Asian Professor's account on the myth of internation vampires deserves special mention.

One of the better Toby Peters mysteries
I have read and enjoyed most (if not all) of the Toby Peters mysteries, and this was one of the better ones. Toby represents both Bela Lugosi and William Faulkner at the same time -- Lugosi is being stalked, Faulkner is accused of murder -- and the cases quickly become entwined, with Toby not knowing where one case ends and the other begins. One of the differences to this book (that I don't remember in any other) is that it doesn't begin with the "bad guy" chasing or confronting Toby. There *is* some flashback, but it is expository. As usual, the era references are interesting, and in the re-printed version (that came out in October 2000) there is an good afterword by Kaminsky about the Peters novels and about Bela Lugosi.

The Art of Questioning : Thirty Maxims of Cross-Examination

A Middling Good Mishmash of Maxims
Professor Irving Younger gave Ten Commandments for cross examination. Brown goes Younger twenty better, but I'm not sure it's an improvement. Most of his advice is sound, but he wanders astray on a few occasions. "30 Maxims" is a workmanlike effort, but not of the first order of excellence. I'd give the book two stars if it weren't so inexpensive. Someday a modern lawyer will write a book on cross that tops the century old "Art of Cross Examination," by Francis Wellman, but that time has not yet come.

One of those little books worth reading again.
Quite a short book, but with lots of thumbnail sketches of little maneuvers in law cases. It's not as good as one might wish for ascertaining useful techniques of cross-examination, but it is a subtle book, pointing out things that might not be naturally noted when dealing with a hostile (or defensive) person. My interest in this book originated with my criminal-defense lawyer brother, but since I am a philosopher, I have to argue with hostile students everyday. Thus, I could use some useful pointers on fruitful and effective questioning. I get the feeling this is a little book that should be reviewed every once in a while as a review of effective questioning. Definitely worth the price, and an easy read too.

Worth the price
Not the best book, but worth the price and worth a read. Not for the beginner.

Long Distance Flying
This book was the best and only book on light plane long distance flying. It is now somewhat out of date given the advent of GPS technology, however, many chapters are still the best there is out there. I would not fly across open water without reading ths first.

Insight into Torture
This book was the first book on torture I have read but I was a bit disappointed because it didn't go into all the areas I was interested in. It was very good in the way it compared the symptoms of torture victims with victims of trauma and other psychotically disturbed people, emphasizing the similarities and differences. There are interesting sections on post traumatic stress disorder and cross-cultural differences in dealing with torture survivors. But what I thought it was missing was case histories of survivors , the particular type of torture they had to deal with and what treatment would be used to help them.
