Proves Fairy Tales Aren't Just for Kids
The amazing Jane Yolen edited this collection of tales that are often overlooked or forgotten. The tales, as the title implies, focus on older characters instead of the younger ones we often read about in Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. Fairy tales and folk tales are for all ages, so and Yolen has collected tales that will be of great interest to any reader looking for a different focus when reading these intriguing stories. The multicultural sources also emphasize the presence of elder characters around the world. This book would be particularly great as a gift to the parent, grandparent or other person who first read you a fairy tale as a child.

This book is about a ghost. In every story there is a different ghost. Every kid that has lived there has agreed that it's haunted. I liked it because I like ghost stories.

This book is a marvel in its simplicity. Children make a connection between the past and the present through Stemple's photographs while Yolen's clear language allows for comparisions in lifestyles. After reading the book, you wiil find yourself making observations of buildings in your community and wondering about their stories.

Magical book
Fans of Jane Yolen and new readers will both love this book. I have never read another book like this one.

It's comprised of three sections, connected somewhat by relationships between the characters, but moreso by the existance of three magic buttons. Each button and its wish aid the owner in a beautiful way.

This book is magical and captivating, and the characters are very well written. Highly recommended!

Neptune Rising... A Wonderful Tale of the Sea
Neptune Rising is one of those fabulous books that fascinates not only children, but adults as well. The stories themselves weave throughout your head until you too want to become one with the sea and swim with the characters. Jane Yolen transcends most authors' stories of the sea, with both new and old fables in this powerful book. I remember as a child being enthralled with her books, sitting on the floor of my public library for hours. As an adult with my own collection of her works, I escape into that same dreamworld whenever I read Neptune Rising again.

A must for bedtime
My daughter, who is now almost 8 years old, has been listening to this CD before bed every night since I got it 2 years ago. For a while we had to start at track/story #4 because she had never heard the end.
Jane Yolen is fabulous and she reads the stories herself.
A Must Have for bedtime!

Superior poetry complemented by outstanding illustrations
For any child who is interested in either animals or evolution, you couldn't choose a better gift than Jane Yolen's "The Originals." When so many children's books focus on kittens and puppies, what a treat to take a look at some lesser-known animals who have scarcely changed throughout millenia.

Ted Lewin's watercolor illustrations are up to his usual extraordinarily high standards. The animals look out at the reader solemnly, or engage in animal behavior without a second thought as to what the reader thinks. They range from mammals to birds to reptiles and all sorts of other beasties. It's a learning experience to read this wonderful book, and it's a treat to see how Yolen describes the animals in poetry. Yolen and Lewin have a simpatico herein that invites readers in and makes them want to stay.

Very highly recommended!
