Shortly after their arrival on the island, Adam, an attorney, becomes enmeshed defending Scott Covey who is accused of murdering his wealthy wife Vivien. While Adam is busy with business, Menley is slowly but surely having a nervous breakdown and it seems to the reader that someone is trying to make her go crazy in true "Hitchcock" style.
As usual, Higgins Clarke throws in some extra characters and clues to throw you off track and hits you with her customary surprise ending.
Please note that I'm giving this book 5 stars for its genre only as well as comparing it to other books by this author.
I'LL BE SEEING YOU centers around Meghan Collins, a television news reporter who in the beginning of the novel is covering the story of a stabbing victim, a woman that happens to look very much like her! Pure coincidence? Or is there a connection?
At the same time, Meghan is dealing with the disappearnce of her father, Edward Collins, and because of the circumstances, no one knows whether Edward was murdered, or had just plain disappeared along with a huge sum of money. Both Meghan and her mother cannot move on with their lives because there is no body recovered from his supposed drowning off the Tappan Zee Bridge. At the same time, Edward is accused of murdering a woman that all had thought was a reputable scientist at a in-vitro fertilization center.
Between the death of the mystery woman and Meghan's father's disappearance, there unravels a complex story of a man with a double life, a newstory about the in-vitro fertilization center, and the facts that tie all of them together. And eventually, Meghan learns the mystery behind the stabbing victim.
This is a definite must-read for all Mary Clark Higgins fans!
Neeve Kearny is a high-class New York clothing storeowner who has a good intuition of the disappearance of one of her best customers, Ethel Lambston. Ethel is a famous gossipy author, who suddenly disappears without a trace. No one seems to notice or cares that Ethel is missing except for Neeve. After police finally realize she is missing and not out on one of her infamous get-a-ways, they find her body in a nearby park. Suspects start popping up and the police start a search for Ethel Lambston's murderer. Ethel's nephew moves into her apartment and starts inheriting her fortune. Him being her only kin he is surprisingly not disturbed by his aunt's death, which makes him a main suspect for the police. Another suspect pops up which is Ethel's ex-husband. He was the last to see Ethel alive and neighbors heard them in an enraged argument. Neeve Kearny struggles with her friendly client's death and it brings back memories of her mothers' death, which happened 2 decades before. With a twisting and mysterious ending the two deaths are intertwined with a shocking murdered.
This was my forth Mary Higgins Clark novel that I have read, even though it was good, I must say it wasn't one of the best. I like the kind of book that when I'm reading it I can't seem to put it down, with While my Pretty One Sleeps it wasn't hard for me to put it down and walk away from it. Only because the suspense wasn't there until the last few chapters. Most of the book is just setting up the characters and circumstances for the suspenseful ending.
Clark's character development was definitely good and made each character come to life and seem somewhat real. I've read other books and not really felt I knew the characters by the end of the book, but with this one I could. Neeve, the main character, was a complex character having to deal with Ethel's death and then her past with her mother's death. Clark did a good job getting into the minds of each character and why they felt how they did.
Even though she once again wrote another murder mystery book I could honestly say it was believable. The circumstances and how each person reacted to them were completely believable in the sense that the plot could easily happen. The plot of the story was well developed. Bringing the past and how Clark connected it to the climax of the book shows how well of a writer she is. One of the best things about this book was how easy it was to read. I wasn't struggling to find definitions to big words and getting lost in point of view or flashbacks the whole time.
I do recommend this book to other Mary Higgins Clark readers only because it's an OK read for one of her novels. I do not recommend this book to someone who has never read any of her books. I would suggest to start out on another novel of hers like All Around the Town or Remember Me. They are good and really get you deep into the book. Over all I rate While my Pretty One Sleeps 3 stars.
When Neeve's mother was killed, her family thought it was Nicky Spetti, but when Ethel's throat is the same as the one on her mother's neck, Neeve thinks otherwise.
I liked this book a lot. There were three suspects, and you never know who did it until the last four pages. It was a page-turner. Also, this book was just real confusing, and that is what makes it so good. It is just one of those books that you can't put down. Wouldn't you like to read a book like this? I am pretty sure that I would. That is why I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in reading it.
I read tons of books than this one. In the others you normally find out who killed the person in the middle, but then you have to find the person. In this one you find out in the last pages, and the person is right there. I think that this is one of Marry Higgins Clark's best books. I may have rated it a four, but that is because I think it could have ended a little bit sooner. I don't think that it should've been dragged on so long. It kind of made the book a little bit boring. Also, the book itself could have been more into the story. I mean, it really didn't need the part about her mom dieing, that could've been left out and they still could've found out who the murderer is, because it is a book, not real life/
Jenny MacPartland is a divorced mother of two who is swept off her feet by Erich Krueger, a kind, handsome artist who marries her and takes her back to his sprawling farm in Minnesota. Not long after she arrives, she begins to sense tension in the air. Erich begins to behave strangely. Her ex-husband, Kevin, comes down to visit her, stirring up trouble. The whole place is overshadowed by the strange presence of Caroline, Erich's long-dead mother, to whom Jenny bears a striking resemblance. Soon Jenny begins to have dizzy spells and wonders if she is sleepwalking during the night. What began as a dream for both the protagonist and the reader has transformed into a horrific nightmare.
Clark handles this transformation with considerable deftness, demonstrating her masterful control of pace and characterization. The plot is especially convoluted and intricate; in fact, there are as many surprising twists as there are pages. Unlike LET ME CALL YOU SWEETHEART and WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN?, in which the terror kicks in only in the last few chapters or so, A CRY IN THE NIGHT turns on the suspense less than halfway through the novel and never lets up the pressure. This is an unusually chilling book, but aside from all the suspenseful pleasures of the story, it is also a very sad and emotionally involving drama. There is no pat resolution or happy ending here, but the denouement, if bittersweet, is wholly satisfying. This reader is, I'm happy to report, an officially converted Clark fan.
I recommend this book for ages 12 and up. It's one of my favorites. Anyone who likes Mary Higgins Clark should read this book. It was AWESOME! ...
TV producer, Nona, wants to do a show about why people respond to personal ads and who they are. Nona convinces her two best friends to do some research for her. Erin and Darcy both agree and Erin answers ads for the both of them. After a date with an "ad person" Erin isn't heard from again, but a few days later her body is found strangled to death and wearing a dancing slipper and her own shoe. Darcy soon finds out that many other girls who answered the ads are missing but still Darcy wants to find the killer of her best friend. Darcy keeps trying to find out who killed her friend, not realizing she is the next victim. The story jumps back and forth to show you what the murderer is feeling. It gives you huge creepy feeling; yet you understand how crazy he is. You would never guess that the killer is who he really is. He started killing 15 years ago when he had a huge crush on Nan Sheridan and he got jealous of her. He was invited to her party so he decided to give her her gift the next morning, a pair of dancing slippers. If you love suspense novels this is one you should read. You won't put it down and you will stay up half the night trying to read it.
My favortie story was the first one, The Anastasia Syndrome. A womans mind is taken over by an evil womans mind from the past. You will never guess how it ends.
The other four stories were very enjoyable reads as well. Terror Stalks the Class Reunion will keep you guessing through the whole story.
Lucky Day starts out as a lucky day for one man and turns out to be unlucky for him and two other people.
Double Vision is a bit of a stretch for the title. You have to read it to find out why.
The Lost Angel is my least favorite but an enjoyable read any way.
In the main story, Anastasia, an historical writer Judith Chase, is engaged to the future prime minister, Stephen Hallet. She is working on a novel though, and is caught up in a lot of other issues along with it. The evil mind of Margaret Carew, dominates Judith, and it is a true mystery as to what is happening within her mind. You really have to read into it to know what I am referring to here, but it becomes very frightening in many places as Judith experiences strange events. The psychiatrist, Dr. Patel, puts her under hypnosis, giving her a drug that makes her regress further into her confusing past.
The other stories in the book, were even scarier yet, than Anastasia. If you feel like a good thrill, read on!
When she's not searching for clues about that, Pat is delving into Senator Jennings' background, though the woman is reluctant to open up about certain parts of her life, forcing Pat to investigate further. She eventually does get into trouble for that when she reveals too much about the senator's past--involving theft, infidelity, and murder.
"Stillwatch" is fairly fast-paced and an all-around good read. While partially a political mystery, it's relatively uncomplicated and free of political jargon, so the average reader can understand it. There's also a small amount of romance involving Pat and Sam Kingsley, an older congressman she had had a brief affair with a couple of years ago, but who has now become somewhat involved with the senator. I'm not much of a romance fan, but this underlying storyline was tolerable and doesn't overshadow the main story; plus I admired how Pat acted in the relationship; she wasn't the typical clingy, overly-sentimental heroine. If this book is any indication of what her others are like, then this certainly won't be my last Mary Higgins Clark book.

This book was very good. I really enjoyed reading it. Although it starts off slow and out of nowhere, the plot thickens and it is a big surprise at the end. Suzanne Reardon, a wealthy woman, is murdered. Over her body are sweetheart roses, hence the name. Her husband was convicted of the murder. He is in jail for at least 30 years without parole. Ten years later, Kerry Magrath and her daughter are in Dr. Smith's office, for a plastic surgery counseling. Kerry sees a Suzanne Reardon look-alike. She looks into Dr. Smith and finds out he is Suzanne's father. This leads up to a number of other suspects including Jonathan Hoover, Jimmy Weeks and others that may have had interest in Suzanne. It leads up to the end where Dr. Smith is murdered as well. Kerry then finds out who the killer is, but not soon enough. She goes to the killer's house and she and Robin are to be killed until someone who couldn't before helps them. I recommend this book to anyone who is willing to stick with it and loves a good mystery story.
I have read many Mary Higgins Clark books in the past. She is a great author, this book is no exception. It leads you through a maze of twists and turns and the conclusion amazes you.
I really liked this book. There are surprises everywhere. For example here is a quote from the book. "With a roar, the car came rushing across the road, seemingly aimed right toward her. Just as she thought it was going to come up the curb and hit her, it swerved into a U-turn and then raced down the block. page 117" It's great how Clark lets you think you have figured out who the killer is and then you get new information. I think that I am like the Kerry McGrath the lawyer. If I came upon some information that was important. I wouldn't listen to all the people who want me to leave it alone. I really like Clark's style, a few other of her books I would recomend and, Loves Music Loves to Dance, All Around The Town, and On the Street Where You Live. They are all murder mysterys. If you get scared easily or have nightmares about things you read, I would not recommend this book. It is pretty scary. One of the most scary things about it is that her stories seem like something that could happen to you, her characters are like people you know. If you like to be frightened I would definitly reccomend this book and many of her other ones.
I simply could not put it down. The plot of this book hooks you in the first chapter and keeps the pages turning to the very last page.
I read it in two days (working a full time job and taking care of a family) in my spare time, it is a very fast reading book.
This auther does a wonderful job with keeping the reader intrigued threw the entire book leaving you wanting to read another.
