A great gift to yourself!
I really enjoyed this book. As a convert to Catholicism in 1997, I am constantly looking for resources to learn the nuances of each "Catholic thing" that Catholics do. Fr. Fragomeni's book, "Come to the Feast," does just this, and does it so well that what may ordinarily be a "heavy" topic to discuss, becomes extremely easy to read and enjoyable by his many examples and stories. The "Catholic thing" that this book uncovers is the GIFT that God gave us through Christ.

I especially liked one of his stories in his chapter called "Blindness I Have Known." He tells us that at the age of 20, he took a job making $2 a Mass, playing the organ. As God would have it, a 13-year-old came along--the catalyst for a lesson in humility. Oh, how we learn!

This book is a compendium of stories expressing his view of the feast of Eucharist--the gifts we have, the gifts we share, and the gifts we learn to accept.

Contemporary critique of the American Revolution.
This is an excellent collection of documents concerning pacifists who resisted the American Revolution in the name of religious liberty. Anyone interested in the difference between the American and French Revolutions should read this material. It shows that some of the same intolerance seen in the Jacobin Republic in France between 1792 and 1794 was present in the new United States. Another example of how patriotism can be the enemy of liberty.

Doors of Perception: Icons and Their Spiritual Significance
Published in Paperback by St Vladimirs Seminary Pr (01 January, 1996)
Authors: John Baggley and Richard Temple
Amazon base price: $15.95

An Excellent Western Introduction to Eastern Orthodox Icons
In his preface John Baggley writes: "It may well seem strange that an Anglican parish priest should write an introductory book on icons. After all, icons are hardly a part of English Christian tradition. The tradition to which icons belong is a complex one, and one that is alien to many Western Christians."

Thus begins a thoroughly researched, well written and sympathetic introduction for Western readers to the icons of the Eastern Orthodox Church. As a matter of fact, this book is so highly regarded by the Orthodox, it has been published in United States by one of our premier Orthodox publishers, St. Vladimir's Seminary Press.

"Doors of Perception" is divided into three parts: the main body of Baggley's text covering historical, biblical, spiritual, visual and environmental aspects of iconography; followed by Richard Temple's interesting essay on the painting of icons; and finally a series of seventeen plates, with an informative commentary on each icon. This latter section pretty much follows highlights of the Orthodox liturgical year.

I would recommend this to people from the Western tradition who may be curious about icons and their role in Eastern Orthodox worship, or to people--like me--who, after a life in the Western Christian tradition, have decided to "face East." I would even recommend this to those interested in icons as religious art (although the Orthodox don't view it as such), or to those interested in art history.

Dynamics of Spiritual Life: An Evangelical Theology of Renewal

Thank you, Richard Lovelace
In Dynamics of Spiritual Life, Lovelace gives a scholarly, yet non-technical, analysis of the elements of revival (which Lovelace correctly dubs normal "spiritual life"). The book looks at scriptural principles, examines past revivals, and establishes a theologically sound model for implementing the lessons learned from the scriptures & the wisdom of the past. Drawing much upon Jonathan Edwards, Lovelace proposes that the elements of revival are: conviction of sin, deep understanding of justification, movement of the Spirit, prayer, community, missions, & social compassion.

Richard Lovelace is an under-recognized great Christian thinker. This volume is scholarly, insightful, and surprisingly devotional. The principles are applied and oft quoted by Tim Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian in New York. Redeemer has grown and planted about a dozen churches over the last decade. I consider this a must read for anyone who wants to understand how God works radically in normal "spiritual life."

Faithful yet Changing by Mark S. Hanson
This is one of the most gospel-centered books I have ever read. Bishop Hanson explores "witnessing" but doesn't make me feel guilty because I "don't witness." This book is very pastoral and should be read by every person who has ever had doubts about God's whereabouts. And then re-read it. Keep it handy, and highlight as you read. The chapters on Worshiping, Equipping, Changing, and more, are equally as pastoral as Witnessing. Because it is designed to be used for discussion, it is Bishop Hanson's hope that ". . .every congregation . . . will gather around these themes for conversation and prayer, to seek togther to clarify a vision of what this church might be in mission." Your yoke will be lighter.

Will Increase Understanding of The Spirituality in Suffering
This book having, in my opinion, both a strong academic and also personal emphasis, isn't a "quick read" - not if you're going to get the most possible out of ALL THAT IT HAS TO OFFER.
There are questions at the end of each chapter that invite the reader to PAUSE AND CONSIDER how their own personal thoughts, feelings and daily living apply to chapter highlights.
Scripture quotes, analysis and also insights from several spiritual writers are also included.
This is definitely a book that has the potential to provide the reader with an INCREASED DEPTH OF UNDERSTANDING of the spirituality in suffering - truly a MUST READ !

This book and its fantastic photos inspire me to travel.
This is a very carefully researched book and it is reflected in the balanced and thorough text. The photos, however, are the reason I give it "5 Stars". They are not just "nicely shot" - they actually give you the feel of the place (I've been to a few of the Missions written about). It is an exicitng book - inspirational. I've read it a couple of times and each time, I want to pack up my bag and head for the Arizona-Sonora border. It is like entering another world! And the photgraphers and author have accurately captured its essence...
