Enough with silly sunday School classes about stories and opinions; THIS should be the textbook of sunday School classes of the truly justice-minded churches of America.
As good as this book is as an introduction, I think an exploration of the fundamental principles of Catholic Social teaching would round off the presentation. Also, there is a need to discuss practical application of Catholic teaching such as Princpled Nonviolence and grassroots praxis.
The range and depth of the book is a welcome addition to a growing attempt by Catholic theologians and ethicists to apply the Gospel to the "signs of the times". Kudos for a job well done ! One will eagerly await the second volume of Christian praxis.

The level of asceticism he practiced he never pushed on anyone else. He expected much out of people, but made them want to be that way of their own will. He wasn't interested in having a bunch of puppets. He was a true spiritual father, not a spiritual dictator.
Many of his ideas, sayings, etc will seem "radical" to most English speakers. After a while though, you realize Elder Joseph isn't the radical one, he is living the God-inspired life, while the rest of us aren't quite hitting the mark.
More than anything though, you realize how his love of God has caused him to have extreme love for all of creation...even those that didn't like him. Elder Joseph was a man of incredible discipline, humility and love. He was always strict with himself, willing to admit when he was wrong. He was kind, generous, and loving to others.
I can't say enough good things about this book. The Elder's words just melt you with joy and challenge you to become like Christ. I also want to comment on the literal book itself. The hardcover edition is beautifully put together. Embossed cover, multicolor printing, nice art, quality paper, binding etc. If taken care of, this book should exist for generations.
Buy this book, and challenge yourself.

Fr. Champlin's presentation reads well straight through, but a detailed table of contents makes it easy to find answers to specific questions, as well. A very basic theology and/or history of many of the actions and symbols of the priest are offered, and no lay person should have any trouble understanding the explanations given. Also helpful is an exploration of which elements of the Mass are changeable and which are not, and the changes from the pre- to post-Vatican II Mass.
Although written by a Roman Catholic priest, and addressing the RC Mass, this is a wonderful reference for any Christian in a liturgical church (Old Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran) -- or for anyone else interested in the meaning of the celebration of the Mass.

This book should be in every Christian's library.
"When we get to the heart of it, Rescue is putting God first by obeying Him when He tells us to put others first. Rescue is doing it in a way which sacrifices our benefit and comfort for another's, whether on the mission field, in our churches, in our marriages, in our careers, or at the abortion factories. Rescue is when we physically intervene to protect someone in a way which does not hurt anyone and which causes us to throw in our lot, our reputation, and our future with the one whose life has been declared refuse: we become refuse with him in the name of Christ who became refuse for us."
Shattering the Darkness is one of the most penetrating and relevant messages on the cross that I've read. It draws me back again and again.
