Good for novice bad for intermediate
A very "Graphic" book comprising of pictures and illustrations. Examples are excellent but lack the serious and more practical aspect of it. The cost of the book bears most of the colour printing and not the content of it. An excellent and inspiring choice for beginners but a rather long-winded version for the more serious ones....as stated behind the book.

Fancy page and great illustration

As usually, I first looked at the physical form of the book. I'm interesting with its full color design. I'm quite sure that this book is expensive enough. And I'm true, it's $49.99. I hoped that the content will equal with the price.

From the user level category at the back cover, I know that this book for New until Casual user. I wonder how it will explain about great web design for new user. After I read and passed chapter to chapter, I have plus mark for this book. It teaches the user how to layout the position of every object in the web page for nice looking purpose. With its full color figures, will make user enjoy their trip to great web design.

But, I have found one big minus mark for this book. It doesn't explain the syntax of HTML itself deeply. It just explains a few of HTML tags, and shows great figure of each example. If new user buy this book, he will be disappointed with the lack of HTML tag explained here.

Finally, for new user that had previous knowledge of HTML syntax or had the HTML Reference Book, buying this book is good for improving the knowledge of web page great design with nice looking. But for the truly new, it's not recommended to buy this book because its lacking of HTML syntax especially frame syntax. For $49.99 it's equal for full color examples and full loaded shareware programs for this book, but not for referencing HTML deeply.

Best Book for Newbies
Well-organized and packed with information, I heartily recommend this book. Unlike many "web design" books, the authors really know their stuff and show examples of really well-designed sites. Visually, this book is a treat to read. The authors keep it simple, while giving people the tools and "eye" they need to design appealing web sites. This book didn't waste my money, although I'm an experienced web designer.

good practical guide with FDA examples
The authors have experience conducting clinical trials in the pharmaceutical industry and this shows in their approach. All the issues that arise in an NDA submission to the FDA are covered. In the introduction the authors describe the regulatory process and the role of the FDA. They even provide organizational charts for the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. I have been working as a senior biostatistician for medical device companies for the last 5 years. Most of the trials I have worked on were regulated by the FDA and a number of issues that have been important to the FDA include (1) multiple comparisons, (2) intention-to-treat versus per protocol analysis, (3) pooling centers, (4) baseline data and demographics, (5) data monitoring and (6) safety. They are all covered in chapters 11 and 12 of this book.

Chapter 10 emphasizes sample size determination and interim analyses are covered in chapter 9. Randomization and blinding are covered in chapter 4. These topics are emphasized because of their importance in regulated clinical trials. One does not find them covered very much in other statistics texts on survival analysis or clinical trials.

The mathematics level is intermediate. The authors write well and incorporate the important practical interplay between the statistician, the clinician and the physician.

They provide many good references. The book is a good reference for anyone interested in clinical trials. Points are illustrated through the use of real trials.

Recent advances in Bayesian methods, resampling and meta analysis are not covered but most important topics are covered including group sequential methods.

Ethics After Idealism: Theory, Culture, Ethnicity, Reading (Theories of Contemporary Culture, Vol. 20)

A Myriad of Academic Interests
As literary studies moves into the fields of cultural anthropology, race studies, cultural history, and related fields, Rey Chow's "Ethics after Idealism" fills in these various gaps. The book itself spans the whole gamut from a review of the whole academic scenario in North American universities in the institutionalizing of departments and centres governed by the theme of "area studies", to gender-race issues in cinema and its extrapolations for literary studies, and comparative literary works and pieces of popular culture significant of Hong Kong in general.

Rey Chow's interests are myriad, and it is interesting to see how she challenges some of the vital misconceptions of structuralist thought, such the binary between "fascist" and "pacifist", "technological" and humanized". In one of her illuminating essays, particularly "The Fascists Longings in Our Midst", she makes a lucid and sparkling defence for fascism as a tendency that humanity is generally in danger of making rather than an affliction of a few blighted individuals.

This is an interesting foray into various areas of academic interest, between critical theory and cultural studies and literature from a comparative angle. It should interest undergraduate students of diverse interests and graduate students seeking to upgrade their awareness of the potential of the field of comparative literary studies.

hypoglycemia for dummies
As someone who is sick of "being in the fog" from my hypoglycemia I greatly welcomed this book. I needed a book to talk TO me about all of the overwhelming info for treating this and not another book that gave a lot of medical jargon I don't need or understand. I love this book for its nonwordy descriptions of the basics of hypoglycemia- I could actually read this book and understand it all. The writers do a good job discussing the symptoms and what is happening in the body for hypoglycemia to occur. Just like my dietician prescribed for me, Cheryl Chow discusses eating a 40 carb 30 protein and 30 fats early on and then increase carbs if your body allows it. It shows a new "hypoglycemic" food pyramid that shows bread, grains, pasta moved 2 steps up and the veggie group is what you should have more of. (THANK YOU!!) The book does seem to contradict itself in places when discussing carbs(or they may be just trying to say everyone is going to be different).

The only things that bothered me about the book is that, while it does discuss a lot of different topics such as herbal supplements, vitamins, exercise in detail it would discuss other topics with just a sentence or two. Usually these were areas that I would want a lot more detail because I'm having difficulty with them. Of course there were some topics discussed that I really did not see why they were relevant (I guess it may help someone else though). The recipe section was a bit disappointing- only 14 recipies. So if you want more try the Low Blood Sugar Cookbook by Patricia and Edward Krimmel (he's hypo too) and also The Zone. The Zone is based on the 40/30/30 plan too.

a difficult book
This book has been referred by many mathematical economists and I think this book is one of the most excellent books in this field. But this book is written very rigorously and is very difficult to follow. Oh, don't get me wrong! I'm convinced this book will serve the bridge between an elementary level and a more high level.

A Mosiac of Cultures Found in one Book
As a Canadian I find that this book is an excellant example of what can be achieved through exploring our multi-culturalism. The children's artwork, coupled with the text make this book very informative to others so they can understand a little about other cultures, and see the differences and similarities. What I find to be an added bonus is that the text is written both in English, and the writers native language! An excellent read for children mostly, but still enjoyable to adults.

Understanding Sonet Sdh: Standards & Applications

Excellent book
Very well written book. Excellent book for those who have a desire or need to learn SONET/SDH and applications in detail. All you need to do is to read it - author gives you everything you need to know to thoroughly understand presented material. The author takes a reader to a journey to explore SONET from every side.

One does not need to have background or experience in order to understand the concepts and details. Author presents the material in a very clear and comprehensive matter, giving detailed, step-by-step explanations and examples, yet providing necessary background for those who may have lack of it. The figures/pictures are well explained so that the reader is certain of their meaning.

The book is written in a very professional and structured way. Each chapter has a list of objectives that author sets for to reader to accomplish after completing the chapter. Then a brief outline is provided, followed by description of various concepts from high level to the very low level. Book is good for those who need to know things 5000 km above the Earth, and even better for those who need to explore the depths of the ocean. It is very informative. Readers from different backgrounds will find everything they need to know about SONET/SDH in a very easy to understand matter. Book is full of examples and detailed explanations. At the end of each chapter there is a list of review questions, so that the reader can check him/herself with the answer key included at the end of the book. Moreover the author includes the list of the abbreviations and acronyms, so the reader can have everything in one book. The author did an excellent job of putting together a very complex topic in a very easy to understand language.

In summary, I would highly recommend this book for any body who wishes to learn SONET/SDH. It is a great reference book as well. It would also serve very well as an excellent textbook for a SONET class.

Very well done.

Most thorough+technically detailed book available for SONET
This text serves as an excellent reference as well as introduction to SONET/SDH. It is the most thorough and technically detailed book available on the topic matter. The author clearly is an expert in the field. Only area of improvement would be in the editting - however, despite this, the book is a "must-own" for anyone requiring or desiring knowledge of SONET/SDH. Would highly recommend it.

Outstanding coverage of SONET/SDH applications
"Understanding SONET/SDH : Standards and Applications" provides an in-depth coverage of this rapidly expanding field of telecommunications. The material is presented in a manner that is easy to follow, yet provides sufficient detail to serve as a reference for basic network design and implementation. Being involved in telecommunications system engineering activities, I frequently use this book to supplement documents published by ITU and other standards organizations. In addition to a comprehensive presentation of SONET/SDH theory, the author also provides numerous examples of how these concepts are applied in the field environment. If you are a network planner, design engineer, marketing representative, or student, this book should certainly be part of your personal telecommunications library.

Understanding Wireless: Digital Mobile, Cellular & PCS

Poor book I never read
This book is really rush work. There is a lot of information but it is very poorly explained. Even simple concepts are presented in a very complicated way. It looks as if the author took a presentation and cut&paste it into a book. I am sorry I had this book.

Lots of info - poor editing (if any)
This book has a lot of info about several wireless technologies, and does a reasonable job of explaining the concepts and details. I read this book after having seen the movie (i.e., taken a class from the author on Wireless concepts), which made it easier to understand; i am not sure that a reader without that benefit would find it as useful. The spelling and grammar in the book is atrocious! The author, a very knowledgeable, engaging and humorous teacher, admitted in the class that he didn't pay much attention to all that in the book!

Excellent source for information
This book provides the history of communications and is an excellent source for any type of telecommunications information.

Sun Tzu: War and Management: Application to Strategic Management and Thinking
Published in Hardcover by Addison-Wesley Publishing (1991)
Author: Chow Hou Wee
Amazon base price: $29.90
Average review score:

Unethical -- and poorly written
This book prescribes that being unethical (cheating your competitors, lying to them, subverting their trusted advisors, spying on them and harrassing them when weak) is desirable and indeed good strategy. There is no coverage of any aspect of developing one's own assets or competitive strengths -- just of taking advantage of one's competitors' vulnerabilities. These strategies are passed of as "ancient Chinese wisdom". If this is Chinese wisdom, it certainly explains the crurrent fall of the economies that they dominate! This is also a clumsily written book replete with grammatical mistakes and cliches.

Detailed application of interest to executives and educators
This book analyzed Sun Tzu's principles and theroies extremely well. It's a must for executives and educators.

Enlightening & Thought Provoking
It is very difficult to find any book that is error-free. What is more important is the contents. The Californian reviewer seems to be very biased against Asian authors! He obviously does not know the very high credentials of the senior author and his works. He also deliberately chose to ignore the comments of the authors on ethics which were given strong coverage towards the end of Chapter 7. Not only have I read the book, but have recommended it to many of my American corporate clients who greatly enjoyed it. I personally think that this is the best book in the market on the applications of Sun Tzu's Art of War to business. The authors deserve strong commendations for their great effort. The mere fact that the book is still selling today without any revised version since it was first published in 1991 speaks volumes about its credibility and popularity. How many books are in such demand after 9 years?

By the way, the ignorance of the Californian reviewer is appalling and mind-boggling. I hope not the average American is not like him. What has this book got to do with the recent economic ills of Asia? For his information, I like him to know that Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, and many other Asian economies are NOT dominated by the Chinese. Interestingly, those that are truly dominated by the Chinese - Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and Singapore - suffered least in the recent crisis.
