The Danger of Words and Writings on Wittgenstein
Published in Hardcover by Thoemmes Pr (2003)
Authors: Maurice O'Connor Drury and Allen Drury
Amazon base price: $95.00
Average review score:

A classic; should be reprinted
Drury's work is a classic. It includes discussions of issues in psychiatry and religion by a friend of Ludwig Wittgenstein's, the great philosopher whose works "Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus" and "Philosophical Investigations" remain controversial and highly influential today in philosophy -- especially analytical philosophy, (the late) logical positivism, and the philosophy of language. Students interested in any of these fields will also benefit from Drury's work, and it can especially recommended to those who enjoy Wittgenstein's own writing, or who are interested in how it might be applied to issues such as psychiatry and religion.

Balanced and informed
This is the detailed story about how China during the Deng Xiaoping era was transformed from a socialist or quasi-socialist dictatorship to a capitalist dictatorship, but without giving up the socialist slogans. In the words of the author (pp. 492-3): "China today is experiencing, on a massive scale and in extreme forms, all the social evils of Western capitalism that modern Chinese intellectuals and political leaders sought for over a century to avoid. [...] That century-long quest now appears to have been all but abandoned. In the 1980s, China's leaders gradually reconciled themselves to enduring the vicissitudes of a capitalist regime-that "social anarchy which turns every economic progress into a social calamity," as Marx so acutely and forebodingly described the workings of capitalism." In my view, the book is very well written and well argued. Above all, it is free from the irritating Western bias that mar many books on China. Thus, the author more than once takes pains to explode myths about modern China, e.g. the popular impression that the Mao era was a period of economic stagnation (p. 188). But Meisner's story is in no sense the story about China's transformation from a socialist paradise to a capitalist hell. On the contrary, the book seems to me to be very balanced and credible. Recommended!

Design of modern transistor circuits
Published in Unknown Binding by Prentice-Hall ()
Author: Maurice Yunik
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $114.59
Average review score:

An absolute must for any electrical engineer
Most books on transistor design focuses on circuit analysis: given a certain circuit, find the current in all branches, freq. responce, and al. This may be great when one wants to learn the circuit inner workings but it terribly fails when you need to work the other way around: given what you want, how should you calculate and pick the right components to bias your transistors the way YOU want them to work. Well, this book does just that. M. Yunik does a terrific job in explaining the art of transistor design strategies. It covers everything from basic network analysis, detailed explamation of transistor parameters (as shown in data books), transistor bios, coupling, frequency responces, power amplifier and more. It even fully covers JFET! It's a shame that such a nice piece of work be out of print.

Dialogue and the Human Image : Beyond Humanistic Psychology

A WONDERFUL book for both leisure and academic readers.
This book smoothly and succinctly pinpoints the causes -- and choices for resolution -- to the various difficulties that inevitably arise in all relationships (not only intimate relationships, but also work, friend, etc.). Its topic is most pertinent to our times and its insights, if applied, are most effective -- even life changing. I found it the perfect balance of "academic" and "layperson" reading, and quite touching as well. The writing speaks to the heart of concerns that have churned inside all of us, but that we could never seem to express. Read it ASAP -- you will not regret it

Dialogue in Hell Between MacHiavelli and Montesquieu
Published in Paperback by Lexington Books (2003)
Author: Maurice Joly
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Not for the Optimist
Before I can even begin about the book, the story BEHIND the book is amazing. It would not surprise me if Cheney had a copy of the German version somewhere in his desk as Bush probably wouldn't understand a third of the amazing ideas put forth in this formerly banned book.

Watching the news is like watching Machiavelli's Dialogue come to life. Listening to Democrats is like hearing Montesquieu's feeble attempts to say that in the end, the good guys will win because of Justice and Liberty. If the Dialogue were a swordfight, Machiavelli would have not only killed poor Montesquieu, but eviscerated and beheaded him as well. Waggoner's commentaries and insights are a little dry when compared with the excellent text but are a good read and do well to put some of the outdated points in the text into context. I strongly reccomend this for anybody who is questioning the course of events that our world is being swept up in.

Directions in Physics: Lectures Delivered During a Visit to Australia and New Zealand August/September 1975

5 Lectures by one of the most renowned physicist ever!
"Directions in Physics" constist of edited transcripts of 5 lectures given by Professor Dirac when he was visiting Australia and New Zealand in 1975.

The five lectures are about:

1. The development of quantum mechanics.

2. Quantum electrodynamics.

3. Magnetic monopoles.

4. A positive energy, relativistic wave equation.

5. Cosmology and the gravitational constant.

In my opinion, Dirac is one of the greatest physicist ever. This book gives a unique insight his way of doing science, in which mathematical beauty plays an important role.

Lecture #1 is also very nice because Dirac has experienced much of the development of quantum mechanics himself, making him an authority on the area.
