Complete and Non-technical
This is an excellent review of the issues raised with manipulation of human stem cells. It covers all kinds of scenarios and sees them through various perspectives. The book is enriched by essays from distinguish authorities in complementary areas. Everyone gives their opinion and explains their point of view in a non-techincal language. Besides it includes a very interesting interview with a panel of personalities such as James Watson. I do not like long reviews, so this would be short too, just to finish a last warning, this is not the latest publication on the subject and since its publication tons of related work has been done. This is important so if you want to be updated you will certainly need recent information, nevertheless this covers all in an excellet manner, I highly recommend it.

Putting groundbreaking human genetics in perspective
Important developments in the rapidly-changing field of human genetics are in the newspaper virtually every day, but the underlying ethical and moral issues seem to remain constant from year to year. This book does a very fine job of exploring those concerns and examining the larger implications of human "germline" engineering.

Although it also contains additional related essays, "Engineering the Human Germline" basically seems to be an edited transcript of a thought-provoking symposium (of the same name) which a thousand or so others and I attended at UCLA in March 1998. During that public event, an impressive panel of experts delivered intelligent, understandable lectures, then debated the great promises and dangers which might result from altering the genes which get passed to our children, grandchildren, etc. (such theoretical alteration of genes, in a nutshell, is what "germline" genetic engineering is). "Engineering the Human Germline" proves to be a worthy record of that symposium.

Some say the human gene pool is a sacred thing and that we should never "play God." Clearly, if you monkey around with the genetic code of an early-state embryo, you might wind up with a monstrosity on your hands. But what if (at some point in the future) you knew exactly what you were doing when you corrected (or requested the correction of) a pre-embryo's faulty genetic code? What if, as a result of your intervention, the resulting human being neither developed a deadly or life-shattering genetic disease (that it would have inherited, otherwise), nor passed the faulty gene(s) on to the next generation? The value of this promise seems to be at the core of what's explored by the numerous contributors of "Engineering the Human Germline."

At one point in this book we have a very outspoken James Watson (the 1962 Nobel-winning co-discoverer of DNA structure who also helped establish the Human Genome Project) saying, "It's common sense to try to develop it ... If we could make better human beings by knowing how to add genes, why shouldn't we do it? What's wrong with it? Who is telling us not to do it?... We should be honest and say that we shouldn't just accept things that are incurable. I just think, 'What would make someone else's life better?'"

All in all, "Engineering the Human Germline" is a balanced, intelligent, readable resource for professionals, students or the average citizen who wants to know more about the groundbreaking developments in human genetics and the surrounding issues which will affect us all.

Highland Songs of the Forty-Five (Scottish Gaelic Texts ; V. 15)

The Horse's Mouth
An excellent book for anyone who wants to learn about the beliefs and values of Highlanders. The book is a collection of songs in Gaelic with good translations and some tunes. There are historical notes and a short biography for each poet. The songs, all contempory, deal with the Rebellion of 1745; the songs of Alexander MacDonald in particular show the progress of rebellion; his early poems were meant to stir up support for the rising and the later ones to keep up the courage of those involved. There are songs in praise of the tartan plaid, of the Highland clans and 'Bonnie Prince Charlie'. A great book for the serious academic as well as the romance novelist or Celtic musician.

The best and only work of its type!
a Charadean (Friends); For those with the Gaelic, native speakers or learners, or those merely interested in Gaelic music and history, this book serves as a wealth of information. Not only did the late, great Dr. Campbell put forth a magnificent volume of poetry, but an extremely important and generally overlooked primary source for those interested in the Jacobite period in general and the '45 in particular. For only here can be found the ideas and beliefs of the most important people in the Jacobite struggle - the Gaelic people themselves. Regardless of one's political viewpoint, it must be recognized that it is what the contemporary Gaels themselves thought and felt that is central to an understanding of why these people rose not once, but four times in sixty years, in an effort to restore the dynasty they viewed as the only rightful heirs to the throne. In these days of "debunking" historical revisionism, much of it generated by Whig (and latterly) Marxist/Leveller agendas, it is both interesting and important to see what the Loyal Clans of the Great Glen felt about the Cause.

Beautiful book; great for kids who love space "stuff"!
My almost-four-year-old loves all things space: Star Trek, space shuttles, Apollo 13, etc. I've tried to impress upon him that space isn't just "in the movies," but that someday, he, too, could be an astronaut...that people, have in fact, already "boldly gon where no one has gone before." This book proved an excellent vehicle for helping him understand that. While the language is too complicated for a four-year-old, he enjoys the meticulous paintings of the space shuttle's journey, from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad, then to space and back. An added bonus: He had seen paintings of the space shuttle in the exhibit halls at Kennedy Space Center, and wanted to "take them home." With the paintings in this book...he can do just that.

The drawings are excellent and the story is interesting
I really liked this book because it gave a lot of detail about the actual launch of the space shuttle, but not in technical terms, so kids could understand it

The Winchester Single-Shot, Vol. 1

The Winchester Single-Shot
John Campbell is to the Winchester Single-Shots as Frank Sellers is to the Sharps. This book, and its Volume II, are outstanding books about John Browning's first gun. It covers EVERYTHING you will ever want to know about this rifle, and then some. It is a must for anyone interested in the history of John Browning, Winchester and the famous Model 1885 Single-Shot Rifle. The book is FULL of pictures, diagrams and information about the 1885, including every modification and improvement this rifle went through during its long years in production. It also gives unbelievable details about every customized option or version that the rifle was ever made into. So if you are interested in the Winchester Single-Shot and its history, this book is the one, of two, to read.

The best-done book on a specific model of rifle I've read...
This book has it all for the 1885 enthusiast, as well as for anyone who has an interest in John Browning, Winchester Repeating Arms, single shot rifles, and/or the beginnings of the modern gun industry here in America. Highly readable, with plenty of facts, figures, and illustrations. Well-edited, and excellent graphic presentation. A beautifully written, edited, and executed book, and one that you will read several times for the sheer enjoyment.

The quality of this book is a standard to which all others of its genre should be written to, but unfortunately too often aren't. I salute the author for a job truly well-done, and I unreservedly recommend this title to anyone who has even a remote interest in the subject matter; the cost of the book is money well-spent. The book is that good.

how to keep your cat happy and healthy
This is a wonderful book to have even if your four-pawed friend is just a youngster, as well as being a good guide if you have an older cat, and you need help taking care of all the changes that can take place quite rapidly as an animal ages.
Among the many instructive chapters, the one on health care is detailed and extensive, covering all the common ailments, with useful diagrams and treatment solutions.
There's also a chapter on home care, with good tips on how to administer medication, flea control, and how to take care of emergencies such as burns, choking, etc.

Chapter 5, "Physical, Mental, and Emotional Well Being" is a short but valuable one. It will tell you how to deal with the stressful situations in a cat's life, like moving, travel, and the introduction of a new pet into the family.

Being a "cat person", I much appreciate the care and research that went into this book. The layout is excellent, with several nice b&w photos, easy to read print, "Veterinary Tips" at the end of each chapter from veterinarians across the country, and an occasional side-bar with highlighted and very helpful information.
This is an intelligent, well written book that will serve your cat well and keep it purring from youth to old age.

A must-have for any feline library
This is a wonderful book, written with love and lots of essential information for the owner of an older cat. Great sections on nutrition and age-specific health problems. -- Gina Spadafori, co-author of "Cats For Dummies" (with Dr. Paul D. Pion)

The Authoritative Guide to Self-Help Books

Amazon base price: $43.95

Ask 500 experts or read this book
While this is not true research - no double blind, or placebo controls - this is pretty impressive anecdotal evidence. 500 psychologists and therapists recommend what self-help books really do help, and which are mediocre or downright dangerous. My only complaint is that it is now 9 years old - many new books have been written based on good research (see John Gottman - "Why Marriages Succeed or Fail" and Prochaska, DiClemente, and Norcross - "Changing for Good")

Where is the second edition?

An amazing Quiz Bowl reference
This book is almost exactly what it says it is -- it is an amazing compilation of interesting and significant information. It is perfect for Quiz/College Bowlers who want a reference or just some interesting reading. The information included is nearly comprehensive, Quiz/College Bowl-wise, except for a few notable omissions (perhaps most glaringly non-American literature; the book as a whole is American-centered). Even with these slight drawbacks, the book is still an amazing resource for the academic contestant.
