First paragragh to last, if you want to be there, read this.
From the drawing board to the bomber graveyard, the detail of the book is amazing. Technical stuff and anecdotes from the men who lived and died with these aircraft, it gets you inside an important aspect of WWII. It deeply inspired my interest in the history. Actually I read it 25 years ago and I still remember much of it as if I'd read a month ago!

Thrilling
Orbiting 500 miles above earth, eight dedicated scientist-six men and two women-are conducting experiments in weightlessness. The only crisis has been a conflict between the navigation program director and the mission chief over the affections of one of the women. But this problem is quickly put aside for another, more deadly one-a plague that strikes the station...

Manfac-a real cyborg
This book by the author of "Cyborg", (the Six Million Dollar Man was based on that book) is outstanding, and actually addresses and pokes fun at the physical impossibilities in the earlier books, like a man running 60mph. The background research for the book would appear to be impeccably done from what I know of burn treatment and nuclear reactors. This was a great read, I'm glad I hung on to the book since it appears to be out of print. It would be nice if there were a sequel.

A Great Oldie
If you like read exciting, action-packed, suspense filled books, you will just love Whip. It is an awesome read for anyone looking to reveal the mysteries of what goes on within airplanes and crews in aerial combat. It will make you think about a lot of things while leaving you craving the next page.
I love to read war related books. I have never flown in an airplane before, and this book made me feel like a pilot. It fills you with detailed descriptions and on-the-edge-of-your-seat scenes. It makes you question and think about your life- how fast it could end and how you live it. Everyone wants to life their life to the fullest and Whip further pushed me to that urge.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys an older book that will still leave you breathless with the mysteries of aerial war-fare.

an innovator
Too much of what you hear in New York these days is merely a rehash of old styles. Where is the innovation that Jazz is supposed to feed upon?
Fortunately we have Greg Osby. Osby is one of a few true innovators on the NY scene. The first time I heard "Concepticus in C" (the last piece in this CD), it was like a punch in the face, almost as hard as the first time I heard Coltrane's Giant Steps. I listened to this short piece ten times in a row just to figure out its structure: it breaks all the rules. Osby's idea of rythm and harmony is really something else, very unusual, yet highly structured.
I heard Osby in clubs in New York a few times, and walked out amazed every time. I highly recommend this CD.

Technical and Enjoyable
This book has it all and if you can work through some slow spots you will see it has both a enjoyable histroy view point for the novice reader, a great war story aspect for the WWII junkie, and a techincal stand point for the aviation lover. A good read but maybe a lack of writing experience from the author shows through. Overall very enjoyable and different from your usual Stephen Ambrose-type work.
Captivating Chronicle of a Warbird
Having read a number of Mr. Caidin's other works (Samurai!, Zero!, B-17 Flying Forts), I picked this book up expecting similar quality and detail, and was not disappointed in the least. Whereas Thunderbolt and Samurai focus on the exploits of individual pilots, with the aircraft information as a backdrop, much like the B-17 in Flying Forts, the P-38 is the main protagnoist in this story. The pilots and their missions enable the telling of this tale, but the P-38 itself truly comes to life.
I have read the book three times in the past six months, and will likely begin reading #4 very shortly.
Thank you Mr. Caidin.
A Definative Work on the P-38
This book very well written with documentation and a large number of pilot testimonials. It goes into great detail about the enception, development, and attributes about the most under-rated fighter of the Second World War. Mr. Caiden, despite his obvious feelings for the airplane, illustrates the strengths and weaknesses of this amazing fighter in both an optomistic, and objective light. This book is a must read for anyone who would like to claim to know anything about the Air war in WWII.

Very little to do with the Hubble
This book actually shows very little understanding of the work done by Hubble or its relationship to other NASA missions. Many of the pictures attributed to the Hubble come from other missions; further, more than one artist's rendition is given as a Hubble image.
Pure Poetry
I can't even begin to describe the affect this book has had on my way of thinking in regards to the universe we live in and my own mortality. Before I read this book(a billion times)I was always interested in the universe and what was out there. A co-worker heard of my interest and bought me this book as a Christmas present. I thought, "wow. pretty cool". But in no way was I ready for the abundance if information placed at my disposal by this book. I'm just in awe when I read it. The author really does seem to have passion about our universe and it showed in the writing. The descriptions and hypotheticals are so vivid. You don't have to be some genious to understand what this book is telling you but it doesn't come of as "kiddy" either. To me that is what makes it so wonderful. It gives you the feeling that someone has actually traveled to the ends of the universe and their just telling you what it was like. Even the chapter on Earth is suprisingly very interesting. It gave me a new appreciation(and fear) for this planet. So calm and unassuming in comparison to other planets. But so powerful to all it's inhabitants. "Before our universe existed, there was no past, present, or future. Space did not exist, nor did vacuum. There was nothing-even dark cannot exist without light". wow
Breathtaking!
This book was, simply put, breathtaking. I don't know why someone would wish to sabotage the overall rating by giving this masterpiece one star...but clearly they were not reading the same book I was. To each their own. I found the facts within the book quite accurate myself....having read more than one hundred books of its kind and finding no inconsistencies. The pictures within the book itself were magnificent and well placed throughout the book. The text itself was also very informative and showed that the author was very well versed in the ways of the cosmos...both theoretically and factually. I highly recommend this book to anyone with interest in our cosmos. You won't be dissapointed.
