Like most big lift the flap books, fun and educational
It seems like most all of this kind of big lift the flap books are a little similar---a page about letters, one about numbers, an opposite page and so forth, but they are also all pretty well done and big child pleasers! My 2 sons really like this one. Their favorite part is the "book within a book" of The Three Little Pigs. It got my older son interested in that fairy tale, which we then read in different versions, and then in fairy tales in general! One thing to note---the characters of Arthur and Francine and all of the gang seem younger in this book than in the show, more like preschool versions of themselves.

A winner!
My four year old son has 3 precious "comfort" reads and this is one of them. We've read it so many times together he knows it by heart. It's a great book because not only does it hold his interest (he never tires of the flaps) but it also reinforces the alphabet, counting and teaches him about opposites. And it's also a fun book for me to read aloud (over and over . . . )

I had to buy two!
An excellent book for school readiness. My kids
fought over it so much that I had to buy a
second copy! An absolute must-have for all
4-year-olds. Make sure to buy one for each
child!

AUTHUR'S THANKSGIVING
I think the book "Author's Thanksgiving" is a good book, because it helps kid understand about Thanksgiving. It also tells kids that in anything you do there can be a problem, but all you have to do is think it out even if you have to hurt a friend's feelings to make something better. I really enjoyed the book and the ending was not what I was expecting ( which is a good thing)! It was a very cute thing!

Ms. Carrolls' Class Book Review
In this story Arthur couldn't find a turkey. The best part of the story was when he found a turkey. We learned that at Thanksgivintg we can have fun like Arthur. Arthur was very funny in this story. Our favorite part of the story was when Arthur was a turkey and then everybody else became a turkey. We think that everyone should read this book because it has lots of funny pictures in it.

Arthur makes a great Thanksgiving Play.
This book I like because it is exciting. The ending is very very great. Thanks for writing books Marc Brown.

entertaining offering from Arthur
If you're looking for entertaining Halloween picture books for 3 and 4 year olds, Arthur's Halloween fits the bill.

Arthur and his friends go trick or treating. Arthur is very scared at first, but he learns to overcome his fears along the way. Only D.W. is brave enough to approach the "witch's" house, but then Arthur and D.W. learn that the "witch" is really just a misunderstood elderly lady with a messy house and yard.

Arthur's Halloween is about trick-or-treating, mainly, and there is no mention of Halloween parades, bobbing for apples, or other Halloween traditions. If your children are afraid of trick-or-treating, this book may help them to escape their fear.

Often characters in Arthur videos and books daydream or imagine episodes, and I find that those episodes are presented in a way that my three year old finds confusing. He does not distinguish between the trappings of characters' imaginations and the regular plot. Now I know that I can add commentary so that he understands that certain elements in a book are just the dreams of a character.

For example, in Arthur's Halloween, some of the kids imagine that the "witch" is harming Arthur and D.W. in several different ways. When a toddler sees illustrations of the "witch" doing such things, he believes it just as he believes the rest of the plot. I have learned that I can say "Francine (or The Brain, or Buster, etc.)just THINKS this is happening. It's not really happening, is it?" Then my child doesn't confuse the "real" plot with the characters' fanciful thoughts.

In any case, Arthur's Halloween is not a bad Halloween picture book, and even if you steer your child away from "series" books or books allied with television series, give this one a try.

Arthur Gets Over Himself
This Arthur installment is a cute Halloween story that reminds us appearances can be deceiving. Arthur is scared of everything this Halloween -D.W.'s costume, the family decorations, the batwing brownie snacks at school - things that everyone else seems to enjoy. Obligated to bring little sister D.W. along while trick or treating with his friends, Arthur is crabby about everything, expecially when D.W. runs into the creepy house on the corner. Everyone's afraid to go in, but Arthur has to go in after D.W. When he does so, he finds D.W. contendly eating chocolate doughnuts with the elderly lady owner. He realizes that the old lady is not a witch, just unable to keep up the maintenance on her house all by herself. At the end, Arthur and D.W. leave hugging the old lady and promising to help her rake leaves. All Arthur's friends are impressed, Arthur has learned that there is nothing to be afraid of, and even leads the group home through the cemetary! This is a really important lesson for little ones to learn; not to judge by appearances. My kids love the Arthur books. Despite the fact that they are all aardvarks, rabbits, monkeys, and rats, the problems they encounter are very real-to-life, and D.W. the pesty sister is just perfect! You won't be disappointed with this book if your kids like Arthur!

It was Enjoyable and Fun
Arthur and the Crunch Cereal contest to me was quite an enjoyable book. True that it wasn't one of my favorite of the Arthur series but I felt that it shows children to try to do something and your very best in what you do, but sometimes you don't always fulfill your wishes. Arthur "stole" his little sister D.W's song theme but in the end his concious got to him. I believe it showed children to always be honest. They'll have fun reading the book but shall find something as a reference in the future. There is always a moral in these arthur books and I enjoy reading to Children!

One of the best of the series, and definitely fun!
Number 4 of this outstanding series was a blast! I like the idea of the story, how funny it is, and especially exciting. I wish that this story was real life, because I'd love to win a contest like that. Too bad these neat things have to be stories. Either way, you can't miss this one!!!

Review
This was a book of children's poems about things that little kids are scared of. It takes those fears and turns them into funny things for children to read. This book took a collection of poems and short story about things that many people think about around Halloween. It talks about things like goblins and scary things lurking around in the dark. This is a book that children can read and laughs about things that they think are scary.
I like this book because it gives children a way to read about things that they think are scary and realize that maybe those things aren't so scary after all. If you can get a child to laugh about something that they thought was scary then they may just be able to keep laughing about it instead of letting it frighten them. I think the person who compiled these poems and short stories into this book for child to enjoy really wanted the children to be able to laugh about these things. Many children have fears of things that can't really hurt them and this allows them to see that and laugh about it.

Are kids really scared silly?
Marc Brown's Scared Silly! features many scary poems, riddles, jokes and stories. They are by many different authors that each tells about a scary story and about how they deal with those. Scared Silly is filled with many bright and bold colors throughout the book. This coloration undermines the scariness of the book, and offers comfort to a child reading these stories. Another aspect that takes away from the book being scary is the stories themselves. The selections portray the characters as comedic. This also makes light of the fact that the book is supposed to scare little children. One of the stories called "One Hungry Monster" by Susan Heyboer O'Keefe tells of a common fear young children have. It is about monsters underneath a little girl's bed and roaming around her house. They demand food from her and mess up her house. This would normally terrify a young child, but Marc Brown offers relief trough his pictures, colors, and the outcome of the story. The illustrations on the pages of "One Hungry Monster" are very bright and colorful. They also portray the monsters as silly, with wide eyes and their tongues sticking out. An article from Time Warner Bookmark about Scared Silly says, "Marc Brown has collected an array of lovable ghosts, ghouls, and witches, not to mention a pack of deliciously horrid monsters and a parcel of cowardly bullies." When the girl gives them the food, they play with it and put it all over themselves. The end of the story offers comfort as well. Instead of the girl being scared and running away, she told the monsters that she was disappointed because they left her house in a mess. It says that the "ten sorry monsters" disappear back into the chimney. They also have sad looks on their faces, knowing they had been defeated. These things help a young reader cope with a common fear by dealing with it in a comedic manner. This way of coping with scary things seems to be what Marc Brown was going for when he wrote this book. Another story in which the comedy overshadows the scariness of this book is "Witches Four" by Marc Brown. Witches are normally scary things for a child to imagine. They have always been associated with being mean and scary. In this story, Marc Brown conveys a group of four witches doing everyday things like brushing their teeth, eating, washing their faces, and getting dressed. The illustrators show the witches as old with glasses and gray hair. They look like grandmothers, which makes them likeable. Like the other stories, this one is also filled with many bright and bold colors. The witches are smiling on the pages as well. By the time the story says that the witches are "dressed for spooking," Marc Brown has taken away the scary stereotype of a witch. The stories, poems, riddles, and jokes in Scared Silly are meant to downplay the fact that witches, monsters, sea creatures, and old people are sometimes scary to small children. An article from Time Warner Bookmark says that Scared Silly is "a collection of poems and stories designed to help young readers scale their fears down to size by laughing out loud at the things that make them scared silly." Marc Brown and the other authors use bright colors and comedic characters to offer another perspective of things that normally carry a negative stereotype.

Surprisingly good poems
These poems are great read-alouds. My 7-year-old daughter loves to hear them read and to read them herself. This book has inspired me to buy more children's poetry books. We especially love the poem "The Adventures of Isabel." This should be required reading for all little girls. My daughter, who hates and fears her second-grade teacher, was inspired and strengthened by this poem. I know we will read this book many times for a long time to come.

If you like funny books read this book
I give this book four stars , because it was funny. I think it was funny because of the characters expresions.Sometimes it got boring.I would recomend it to someone because I liked it very much and it was funny .

Authur and the scare your pants off club .
Aurthur and his friends wait for a brand new Scare-Your-Pants-off club book. But at the libray all the books in that series had been banned so they try to find a way to get the books back.

Examining censorship
Arthur and the gang are not-so-patiently waiting for the next installment in the Scare-Your-Pants-Off Book club. They’ve read all the others in the series, like “Curse of the Mummy’s Breath” and “Zombie Substitute Teacher” and can’t wait for the next one to come out.

The day it’s due to arrive at the library, the gang is poised, having all but camped out overnight to be the first in line to check it out and read it. You can imagine their surprise when they find out that it has been banned from the public library! A group of concerned parents have decided that it’s not appropriate for children and to have had it removed! What’s the gang to do? Is there any way Arthur and his friends can get the book back so everyone can enjoy it? A surprise ending is in store for the reader, making this a fun page-turner.

Marc Brown’s Arthur is one of the best-known characters in children’s literature today. He’s seen on television, has large format picture books and also the Arthur Adventure series, of which this title is #2. Intended for intermediate, independent readers who have graduated to short chapter books, the Arthur books are easy to read, a lot of fun, and encourage readers to think about their world and the different issues of friendship, family or in the case of “Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club”, censorship....

I have used “Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club” in my own classroom many times and found that it’s a great way to stimulate conversation and thinking among my students (one cryptically hinted that maybe we should ban THIS book as well!!). My point in using it as a social studies tool isn’t to agree or disagree with students so much as it is to get them to THINK—- “tell me your feelings about censorship, but back it up with reasoning and research” is how I address the issue. This in turn allows the student not only to voice their own opinion, but to examine their feelings and opinions as well; too many times in our culture we allow other folks to do our thinking for us.

Mr. Brown has done an excellent job of taking a very complicated issue in our society and presenting it to young readers in an understandable and intelligent way. I appreciate and applaud authors who not only aim to entertain their readers, but encourage them to think about themselves and their world. Hats off, Mr. Brown!! You’ve done it again!!

The Bedtime Stories Really Help
I have read this book and when my babysitter came, she used to read a story and I would go to sleep. It is like magic. Sometimes, I read the book to myself and notice the drawings and the fairy tales. I think of the colors that I see and see what it reminds me of. But it really does work on me.

Arthur's Really Helpful Bedtime Stories
This is really a terrific book--it takes classic fairy and folk tales and gives them a non-sexist, modern twist. Younger kids will appreciate the pictures and the Arthur characters while older kids will understand the humor, courtesy of the subtle play on words throughout the book. It would be a terrific book to add to one's home or classroom library, and even useful for teachers of upper elementary or middle grades while doing a unit on fairy or folk tales.

Arthur's Teacher Trouble
Marc Brown creates the Arthur adventure, Arthur's Teacher Trouble with a moral in mind. Also it proves that if you work hard and give it your all, you'll be more successful. The book is told for children to understand that a little hard work gets you somewhere. With no effort at all, you won't come out with your best.

Arthur gets stuck with a hard teacher. The teacher starts out tough on the students, assigning homework right away. Arthur isn't very confident in himself and isn't used to the work and extra effort that he has to give to 3rd grade. With all of his hard work he actually gets awarded with something even better...and by reading this book you'll be sure to find out!

Arthur is my favorite character in this particular Arthur book. He isn't very confident in himself, but we all relate to that. And in the end we sometimes get surprised by unexpected turns.

Neat!
This game is great for young computer-users! Each page has at least 15 "interactions" -- i.e. clicking on the salt shakers in the kitchen makes them dance. The story can read itself to you are you can read it silently. Even clicking on one word makes the computer say it. Great for children just learning to read. However, using it TOO many times can get tiring...after all, it is just a computerized book. Great value for the money!

I learned from Arthur's Teacher Trouble.
I learned to do my best, but that if my best isn't better than everyone else's best, it is okay.
