An informatively detailed account
Out Of The Fog: The Sinking Of Andrea Doria is a thoughtfully presented and informatively detailed account of the events that led up to the tragic 1956 sinking of the luxury liner Andrea Doria upon its fateful collision with the Stockholm. Fifty-six people died, the two companies who owned each ship chose to settle out of court, and the lack of documented resolution leaves questions hanging on to the present day. Knowledgeably written by Algot Mattsson (an information officer for Swedish America Line when the wreck happened), Out Of The Fog was originally published as "The Long Night" in 1986; now, this insider's account has been skillfully translated into English and presented to a new generation of readers in this Cornell Maritime Press edition. Out Of The Fog is a confidently recommended addition to 20th Century Maritime History collections and reading lists.

A hoot for South Park land owners
If you have a home in South Park, this is very interesting stuff. Great history. And to think these things happened in our back yard during the Wild West days! Have not read the North and Middle Park sections, but I am sure they are just as much fun for folks from those parts of Colorado.

Wonderfully written biography of an American hero
In this book, which stemmed from a documentary done by KQED in San Francisco, Scott Blakey applies his considerable talent as a writer to the task of telling the story of Commander Richard Allen Stratton's personal and his family's ordeals during his years of captivity in a Vietmanese P.O.W. camp for over six years.

The story is honest and straightforward. No details of the Stratton's personal story is spared or hidden as they share the pain of the time apart, and the pain of the reunion after so long. It is a powerful story, which runs throughoiut with the strength of the Stratton's patriotism and familial love that kept them together as a family.

A wide range of stories clearly told...
Speaking as not only a Cherokee great-granddaughter, but also as a lover of stories, and as a youth services library clerk, I can say that I recommend this book to everyone. The collectors/editors themselves are of American Indian ancestry, and their respect for these stories is obvious. The language is clear, the imagery beautiful... Excellent for read-aloud, terrific for broadening children's horizons!

A MUST for Elk and Mule Deer Hunters
This hardcover book is a must for anyone, like myself, who loves to hunt elk and mule deer. Each state and province is separate in the book and each animal from the Boone and Crockett is listed by the state or province from which it was taken. I also found the book, COLORADO'S BIGGEST BUCKS AND BULLS and Other Great Colorado Big Game, Second Edition, to be of help when planning mule deer and elk hunts. The Records of North American Ek and Mule Deer book has excellent field photos and tons of statistical information about my two favorite animals. Plus, I liked the chapter written by Jim Zumbo.

Slave Power: The Free North and Southern Domination, 1780-1860

Powerful, absorbing account of South's stranglehold
This is an extremely engrossing history of the (virtual) stranglehold the South maintained on the US government from the birth of America until the election of Abraham Lincoln. It is also on account of the efforts by post-war southern historians to cover up the central fact of slavery as the dominating motive in the South's wish for control. I first heard of this book when I read a (highly complimentary) review of it by James McPherson, author of Battle Cry of Freedom. If you like McPherson's book, this will seem in many ways like a "prequel," filling in the story of the run-up to the Civil War in greater depth than McPherson could devote (though he did a great job on that, too). This book blows away alot of the "Gone With The Wind" fairy tales about the South before the war, and shows, convincingly and absorbingly, the Southern States' governments conscious (and for many decades, entirely successfull) attempts to maintain its slavery interests at the expense of the North and , of course, the slaves. When the South could no longer impose its will, it opted for war. Like McPherson's writings, Alan Nolan's Lee Considered, Thomas Connelly's The Marble Man and the writings of Gary Gallagher, this book helps do away with the "Moonlight & Magnolias" view of the South that was so prevalent up until the 1950's and, for some Civil War buffs, is the only reason for their interest. Too, Leonard Richards can write, so the reading of this book is a pleasure right up there with enjoyment of the argument. I think it will appear to all general readers interested in unravelling the complexities of the Civil War and our early history. Unlike so many awful books on the Civil War, this book is intellectually stimulating.

the best book on the subject
The book gives the history of the steel trap in america. It is very detailed from the earliest wooden and straw traps through the era of hand made traps up through the area of mass porduction to modern imported traps. This IS NOT a price guide. It covers all the companies that made traps and their history as well as famous indivual trap makers. It covers all traps from mole traps to bear traps and also includes man traps that possibly was used for slaves or prisoners? The author states these may be untrue. It is a perfect book for anyone interested in the history of traps or mountain men. It would also serve the student of american history who is interested in learning something unusual about everyday life of a bygone era.
