QUAIL AND SHORTHAIRS
I HAVE NEVER READ A BOOK WITH MORE FEELING, KNOWLEDGE, AND JUST PLAIN "SMARTS" AS THIS BOOK BY "WEB" PARTON. I"M A VERY EXPERIENCED HUNTER AND SHOTGUN PERSON AND COULD NOT BELEIVE I WAS READING A BOOK WITH THE REAL TRUTH ABOUT ALL ASPECTS OF THE HUNTING, GUNS, AND SHELLS REQUIRED. MOST BOOKS SHOW THEIR IGNORANCE IN A FEW PAGES, THIS BOOK I COULD NOT PUT DOWN, IT'S THE TRUTH--READ THIS BOOK. PARTON IS MY HERO.

Fantastic Read!
This book establishes Web as the authority on Arizona wingshooting. If you own a shotgun you need this book.

Exellent guide for Arizona bird hunting
For anyone planning a trip for bird hunting in Arizona this book is the Bible. Up to date and precise on maps, roads, and habitat. I've hunted Arizona quail for 12 years and found his information to be right on the money. I've even picked up a few pointers from his book. Well worth having this book in your arsenal to hunt the very cagey desert quail.

A Birder's Guide to Trinidad and Tobago
Published in Spiral-bound by Peregrine Enterprises (December, 1995)
Author: William L. Murphy
Amazon base price: $15.95
Average review score:

Too bad Bill Murphy hasn't written a guide for SE VA!
This guy should be doing nothing but writing bird guides! First, the writing itself is not only clear, but also entertaining. He writes about the birds, the geography, the accomodations as if this is his hometown and these are his friends. The tips are valuable... the book's organization can not be improved... even if you don't plan a birding trip to Trinidad and Tobago, it's worth having this book, because it's fun to read. I wish he would write guides for American areas!

Don't go there without it!
Murphy's "A Birder's Guide to Trinidad and Tobago" is newly released with new maps and updated commentary. These two islands have as many species of birds as the continental US. Finding even a couple hundred species during a self-guided trip requires this book. If you, a friend, or a loved one is going to the islands, don't leave home without it!

Most astounding Bird Book
This is book contains the best bird photographs I have seen. The photographer has some of the most unusual shots of birds. The pictures capture the birds in there normal activities. The text was well written especially keeping the order by seasons. Great job I hope to see more books by these authors.

Birds of the Gulf Coast
A remarkable clear and concise description of Southern coastal birds by seasons of the year. This unique classification will allow even the novice to identify and enjoy migratory birds. Fontenot and Miller's work will enable the entire community of bird watchers to share appreciation of this National treasure. Two species that come to mind are the common blue bird and the rare sand hill crane which we enjoy in the Northern Summer.

The photography is a tour de Force in the Audubon tradition and the bird and habitat description could have only been done by a seasoned birder with years of on site experience. As a bonus Birds of the Gulf Coast is a coffee table quality book. epa

The Falconer's Apprentice: A Guide to Training the Passage Red-Tailed Hawk
Published in Paperback by Eaglewing Pub (March, 1994)
Authors: William C. Oakes and Jack Oar
Amazon base price: $11.95
Average review score:

Must-have for any new falconer
This was one of the first falconry books I read. It is simple and down-to-earth. At first glance it seemed a little TOO basic--no glossy photos, no complicated equipment patterns. It is simply a step-by-step guide to training your first hawk. Oakes never condescends to the reader while still breaking down the process--of training a wild-caught hawk--into easy-to understand parts. He also never loses sight of the big picture. The falconer is doing more than killing rabbits--he is a partner to his hawk. This is both privilege and responsibility.

A would-be Falconer's best written resource
This is probably the most down-to-Earth book I have ever read. This book is not for those who think of Falconry only as a Sport of Kings - for wealthy, bored people. It was the Sport of Kings and now is so much more. This book was written for apprentices, who willingly and lovingly embrace all the ups and downs of this sport. This book was written with Environmentalism and Conservation deeply in mind. Mr. Oakes speaks from experiences, many painful - many wonderful, and insists on teaching ethics, Ethics, and more ETHICS! I cannot imagine anyone truely dedicated to becoming a Falconer ignoring the wealth of information Mr. Oakes provides. His thoughts and guidence will definitely keep the apprentice from making the most common mistakes. Wonderful! Wonderful

The Passenger Pigeon: Its Natural History and Extinction
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (December, 1973)
Author: Arlie William Schorger
Amazon base price: $21.95
Average review score:

The single most interesting book I have ever read!
Schorger's book is the definitive study of the wild pigeon of North America; it covers all matters concerning the birds' natural history and extinction. People with an interest in North American history, ornithology, conservation and the preservation of natural resources will greatly broaden their background and understanding through this detailed and anecdotal study. It contains 424 pages revealing a powerful aspect of North America's history unknown to current generations: skies filled with inconceivable numbers of birds,-as many as two billion in a single migration. Schorger paints a vivid and poignant picture of a world we have lost, tragically, through our own greed and ignorance. If anyone would care to discuss this book or its subject matter further, I would be pleased to dialogue either by e-mail or letter. I have made the study of the Passenger Pigeon an integral part of my life for the past thirty-three years. Sincerely, Holland E. Shaw

The single most interesting book I have ever read!
If anyone on Earth wants to discuss this extinct specie; I guaranttee that my e-mail address is the place to visit. I have had a unswerving fascination with ectopistis migratorius since 1965. Schorger's book is the backbone of any serious study of "The Wild Pigeon" of North America.

Not only pictures of elusive birds, but an adventure to boot
Taking picture of the most rare and shy birds in North America is not an easy tasking, not even for an avid birder and expert in the field. Well, William Burt is an expert in the field, and it took him over 10 years of hard work to research, track down, and photograph America's most elusive birds. Burt has not only delivered a full package of top quality photographs, but he has written an excellent story of his episodes of wandering through endless praries and dark swamps to find these birds. For anyone who loves birds, or loves an adventure, this book is a must.

Great gift for birders
I bought this book as a gift for birders, and they really loved it. It consists of photographs taken of some of the most elusive birds in North America.

THRILLING
In the history of theatre, I am sure that future generations will find that Tennessee Williams was the one playwright who not only wrote of the neuroses and souls of his fellow Americans, but did so with extraordinary beauty and grace.

In this collection one can find three of his most famous plays, two of which, unhappily, do not seem to be revived very often. So although it is always better to SEE a play rather than READ it, that may not be very easy.

"Orpheus Descending" deserves to be rediscovered--a highly poetic, gothic horror story of the battle between art, spirit, soul and sensuality, sexuality. Originally written for the brilliant Italian actress, Anna Magnani, it was in fact played on Broadway by the equally brilliant American, Maureen Stapleton.

"Suddenly Last Summer" was actually the basis for a very long, very self-conscious study I did for a college psych. class. Here in one of Williams most "symbol-laden" plays is his cry for an unfeeling world to accept human beings with all their faults (BECAUSE of all their faults, perhaps?) told through the disturbing memories of a woman whose family wants those memories shut up at any cost.

All three movie versions of these plays are faithful to the originals UP TO A POINT. Try to see the plays, but if that is impossible do yourself a favor: read all of Williams, including his poetry and short stories, and start with this thrilling volume of 3 of his best plays. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

You won't be disappointed OR bored with this volume
The three choices for this volume fit very well together. All three include themes that are so often covered in Williams' work. Bizarre family situations, unrequitted love and battles within the self are portrayed, often brutally, in these works. For example, the struggle experienced by "Maggie the Cat" in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" is a raw blend of self hatred, self love, longing for what can't be mixed with a fearsome attempt of "keeping up appearances" within the confines of a, to say the least, very unhealthy extended family situation. I think another fine example of Williams' flair for the, shall we say extraordinary, is "Suddenly Last Summer." It's not easily described without giving away many shockers so I won't spoil that here. I highly recommend this volume as the two I just mentioned are absolutely fantastic. Also, don't ever pass up the chance of seeing the film versions of these (I speak of the originals in this case).

Classic Hill & Smith
Gene Hill and Steve Smith are the masters of shotgunning prose and this book is definitive proof.

The book is formatted in chapters of essays and yarns written either by either Hill or Smith. Some of the essays are how-to articles; most are anecdotes. The Steve Smith yarns will leave you laughing, while Gene Hill, as was his style, will leave you deep in thought or simply crying.

Great book...read it over and over
Some of the essays had me rolling on the floor laughing...yet there is alot of how to and practical knowledge...discussions on habits and habitat are first rate.

Excellant Bird Dog Training Book
This book is a great read for anyone who enjoys training bird dogs and wingshooting. Mr. Williams knows bird dogs and how to train them. He never sweats the small things or mistakes dogs make. He is very patient and kind. Once I started to read this book, I couldn't put it down. Thanks for the wisdom.
