The Falcons of the World by Thomas Cade
Having acquired this book a while ago through a rare books dealer for [money], I would say that it was a worthwhile purchase. Any lover of the birds of prey would appreciate this attention-demanding volume. It is extraordinarily heavy- a full-sized coffee table book- and brimming with full-color plates of the raptors. Each illustration, picturing even the rarest of these birds, is accomanied by an appreciable amount of data and information. A very worthwhile purchase!

This book is a must for any amature wild life enthusiast
Dear readers,

Today morning before leaving for work i happen to watch National geographic channel wherein there was one hour programe on Florida panther. It's survival seems to be highly endangered due to the fact that their genetic poll being limited and in-breeding among the cats inevitable it gives a very tragic case of survival. I being an avid wildlife enthsiast from India hope that American people will defenitely do something for the survival of Florida panther.

Thanks

great book on grouse hunting
"The hardest thing to do when praising Chris Dorsey on grouse is to avoid quoting him. He knows that the passion for grouse hunting is akin to the passion for living life well, and has the words to tell us why." -- Stephen J. Bodi

A great read!!
If you are interested in endangered species - this is the book for you. Not only does the book outline the reasons for the decline and near extinction of the California Condor - it also talks about other species in the Carrizo Plain that are near extinction. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the Natural History of the Southern San Joaquin Valley.

THIS BOOK REALLY TAKES OFF
True or False - Swifts fly in their sleep?

There are more than 8,600 species of birds and new species are still being found. In total, about 100,000 million birds are flying, walking or swimming around the world. They can be seen in coal mines and on mountain tops, in jungles, cities and deserts, and over oceans and icecaps. Almost wherever you look you will see birds. This book is a lively introduction to many of the species and concentrates on the more curious and unexpected parts of their varied lives.

Birds range in size from smaller than moths to taller than people. Some are great travellers, literally flying around the world. Others cannot fly at all. This book looks at birds that dance, vegetaarian vultures, birds that fly backwards, bone-eaters, parrots that sleep upside down, a heron that fishes with bait, and a poorwill that sleeps through the winter.

This book reveals the fascination and beauty of birds and shows that there is still much to learn about the way they live.

ANSWER: True - Swifts do fly in their sleep. They rise high into the sky at dusk and sleep on the wing, flying down again at dawn.

Not just "flying rats"...
This (surprisingly hefty) book is an excellent guide to a group of birds that many people have a rather dim view of, due to the sometimes massive flocks of feral rock pigeons (Columba livia, a.k.a. the "flying rat") that can now be found nearly the world over. The text is fairly dry, as is typical of all species accounts (and occasionally depressing, considering the large number of these species designated as being endangered), but the book is a treat for those who enjoy a celebration of the diversity of nature (even the dodos are covered). All of the living species and many major supspecies (and many recently extinct species) are illustrated in a series of excellent and beautiful color plates that will surprise and impress those whose experience with this order of birds does not extend beyond their nearest city park. These are NOT "flying rats". Great for the armchair bird-watcher.

Quest for the Kakapo

Gotta Love This Bird!
Who wouldn't fall in love with the chubby, flightless night parrot of New Zealand! The many wonderful pictures in this book show what a charming little critter the Kakapo is. The excellent text tells about the parrot's history, our knowledge of its life style and how humans are working to bring the Kakapo back from the edge of extinction.

As I write this, there are only 62 Kakapo left on earth. Can they be saved?

I was lucky to come across this book on a trip to New Zealand. Although it's out of print, try to find it and satisfy your Kakapo curiosity. We'll never see them in the wild, we'll never see them in a zoo, but this book is the next best thing.

Live long and prosper.
