Best Bible study I have ever done
I did this study 1.5 years ago and still remember much of the information gleaned from it. This is a great way to understand differences between judges, kings, and prophets of the nation of Israel. The life of David is a main portion of the book.

A power packed bible study
This is a terrific encouragement to Christians who want to grow closer to God and to have a desire for His own heart in themselves. We have all fallen short, as did David so many times, but David kept coming back and so can we.

It is six lessons to be done over a six week period and can be used with the International Inductive Study Bible.

This One's A Keeper
This is an exquisite book, but I'm sorry to say, I will NOT pass this one along, like I do so many other books. The quality is A1 and the copy behind it is compelling and engaging - I feel like I get to know Harry - and he's an interesting guy to boot. Whether you are a duck hunter or not, you'll cherish this compendium of exceptional images. I'm not a duck hunter and neither was Harry, believe it or not. So to those of you that aren't hunters, you'll love the landscapes and the waterfowl. To those of you that are hunters, you'll believe this guy spent as much time as you did in the blinds. Go buy this and put it on your coffee table - but read it first. You'll probably find that it gets picked up by A LOT of people.

One to look up too!
Wow, awesome artwork and awesome paintings score a perfect 10 of a book. This book is great for anyone that love ducks, art, or just love to hunt! The price may be a little high, but it is well worth it when you purchase and get this book in your hands. If this book doesn't make you feel like you are standing in a marsh, well, I feel sorry for ya cause this is a book that should make you feel that experience (well, at least as close as you can from just looking at a book)! Ok, well, ducks rule!
And so will you if you purchase this book!
Enjoy!
Quack!

A memorable, strongly recommended collection of poems
In The Great Wounded Bird And Other Poems, David Westheimer (winner of the 2000 Texas Review Poetry Prize) presents a memorable, strongly recommended collection of poems about the experiences of men in a time and place of war. Poggio Mirteto: RAF bomber crewman are in the room next to ours/At Poggio Mirteto, the Italian quarantine prison./When we try to talk to them through the wall,/They do not trust us./We might not be what we claim./But when the sing, "That was a cute little rhyme,/sing us another one, do," and we do,/We pass their test, genuine Yanks. We sing/"Sixpence" through the wall./"I've got sixpence to last me all my life."/Our American version innocent,/The British version dirty,/So we adopt theirs.

Their tales still need to be told
This review first appeared in DR AHEAD, the newsletter of the Air Force Navigators Observers Association (AFNOA).

AFNOA Member Westheimer (Turner 42-04)is one of the most successful writers of America's World War II generation, most famous for VON RYAN'S EXPRESS. However, for purposes of this review, two other books by him are notable: SITTING IT OUT, his 1992 memoir about being a prisoner of war in Italy and Germany, and SONG OF THE YOUNG SENTRY, a 1968 fictionalized verson of the same experiences.

In this volume of 56 short, crisp poems written in free verse (Westheimer says that it is really prose set up to look like poetry), the author revisits his memoir. The result is a wonderfully moving reading experience. For example, here is part of the poem called "Lucky":

"Sometimes I think how lucky I was To be captured instead of killed. Out of harm's way, mostly, For two years."

Or the first lines of the first poem, "Old Man," which says why this retelling of long past events in important:

"Men are dying old That I knew young. Their tales all told, Their songs all sung." Yes, the "greatest generation" is dying, but their tales still need to be told, and Westheimer does it with power. This is a poetic history of the crew of a B-24 who go to war in 1942 via the southern route, their navigator guiding them from Florida to Natal across the Atlantic and Africa to Khartoum and Palestine. Described in "The Southern Route":

"Every hour I shoot a three-star fix - Antares, Vega, Altair, Peacock, Fomalhaut, Deneb, Alpheratz"

From Palestine, they fly combat missions against targets in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and finally, for them, Italy where, still in 1942, they are blasted out of the sky.

Most of the story is about life in prison camps and the people on both sides of the wire, first in Italy and then, after Italy switched sides, Germany. Before that we get a taste of what it was like for young Americans on leave in such places as Beirut, Damascus, and Cairo. Liberation is a special experience and then there are hints of a long lifetime of memories.

THE GREAT WOUNDED BIRD is one evening of readind, but I have gone back into it several times. It also led me into reading Westheimer's three books which are memtioned above. All provide useful and somewhat unusual insights into the expereince of being a prisoner of war. It's educational, but, just as important, good, fun reading.

Indispensible for the serious birder
This book is one of my favorite birding books. I am reticent to call it a field guide because it is so much more than that. Incredible amounts of information on all the sparrows. Great range maps AND descriptions of migration and vagrancy (can I hope to see this bird in my area?), and all the other natural history and behavior information you'd expect. Beautiful plates showing ALL the different plumages, primary and basic, male, female and juvenal. And it's not just a wealth of information, it's a beautiful book, well written and a delight to own.

A readable, useable, technical guide.
Sparrows. Yippee. But if you want to learn them, this is the book.

Lots of detail, as you'd expect, but very clearly presented. Terrific illustrations and range maps. And what I like, but some will hate, is the fairly detailed treatment of every field-identifiable subspecies. Some of these subspecies will become full species some day, if present trends continue, and you'll be way ahead of the game if you've already been working on telling them apart. Plus it's fun; just try to keep an open mind.

Stunningly beautiful
David Hopes, in this sensitive and breathtaking book, reaches the highest goal of any good writing--to touch the spirit and raise it up. These essays are about nature, yes, and about its beauty--but more than that: they are about the interfaces between the human world and the natural world. Or, more even than that, they are about how the human and natural world are one, fabric of the same universe. The nature that is our nature. And, it is this knowledge that has the power to save us. I urge you to read this book and treasure it-- for its beauty and its spiritual searching and its wisdom.

Breathtaking.
There are no words to express the magnificence of Mr. Hopes' prose. I came upon a copy accidently and have read and enjoyed it more than any other book in my vast library. This is a book that truly should be re-issued. David Brendan Hopes is a literary gift to be treasured.

Voices of Costa Rican Birds: Caribbean Slope

Very helpful
For a location that gets a lot of birders there is very little in the way of recordings available for Costa Rica. Don't let the title fool you, a great number of the birds presented on this set are also on the Pacific Slope. The quality of the recordings is very good, and over two-hundred species are resented. I found it very helpful in learning the calls of the birds of Costa Rica

Hearing and seeking
Want to train yourself to recognize the 25% of the Costa Rican birds species by its voices? Then, you have to listen both CD's. I heard them few months ago when my fauna teacher put emphasis in the bird identification (I'm a forestry student --Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica). Sometimes, when you are in a dense forest or thicket you can only hear the birds, so, you need a non-visual way to identify them....and here it is. I bought the "Indicator Birds of the Costa Rican Cloud Forest" (from the same Laboratory of Ornithilogy) and I hear it in my house to train my ears in the identification of non common birds.

Buy it, I'm gonna buy it too.

Lush photography, excellent for novice birders
The photography in this book is superlative and the main reason to purchase it is to admire the lush color photos of California's birds. However, I also enjoy the book because it allows me, as a novice birder, to learn to correctly identify various species. This book is much superior to an Audubon guide or a National Geographic Filed Guild to birds because each photo is huge and shows the birds to their best advantage. The photo of the elusive great gray owl is simply outstanding!

I recommend this book for anyone who has an appreciation of birds and wants to vicariously see them through this medium. It will definitely prompt every armchair birder to take to the field and spy these wondrous creatures in their natural habitat. There are several birds I saw in this book which captured my fancy immediately: the black oystercatcher and the Lazula Bunting, for instance. By seeing these photos, it prompted me to go out and beat the trails and shorelines to see each of these birds up close and "in person." A great book!

Wild about Wild Birds of California!
An outstanding book for two reasons: 1) The photographs by the 26 contributing photographers. Each one is a work of art; excelling in composition and use of color. Kudos on the photography in this book. 2) The text by David Lukas is not only informative and educational but thoroughly enjoyable reading. The text accompanying the photgraphs adds an interesting dimension to the image of the bird. Not the typical statement you would expect to read (and if you know birds, already know.) A great book to own or to give.

All "I" need to know about Play
I have been playing bridge for years but had little improvement before and now I know why.

I need a reference book that help me to tackle the common situations that come up in the play.

This book contains 14 chapters each deals with commonly encountered situations in bridge play. Each chapter has self-explanatory sub-headings that I can reference the materials very easily. Moreover, examples are illustrated under each sub-heading that help me to grasp the principles extremely fast.

Thanks to this book I find myself be a winner more often and enjoy the game much more than before. Its contents are really so practical that next time they can be used and every time they can be applied. It is a book that comprises the materials all I need to know about play.
