Fantastic!
A flight of fantasy for the eye and mind, this fun and fanciful book is a real treat! Lisbeth Zwerger's charming illustrations are the perfect match to the whimsical and sometimes peculiar words of Morgenstern's unique imagery. Bright and bold yet subtle and delicate, Lullabies, Lyrics and Gallows Songs is a true joy to look at and wonder about.

A Tribute To The Imagination
In the land of Elsewhere, the queen calls for the "five fingers of the hand" to repair a broken moon essential to their well-being. Thumbkin, Pointer, Long Man, Gold Man and Pinkie each contribute their individual talents so everyone can once again live happily by night. Good lesson that each person has special gifts. This imaginative tale is cleverly spun and children will delight in the enchanting full page illustrations of a somewhat somber land in Elsewhere (inhabited by brownies and fairies), lit up by the glow of the moon, lanterns, candles, fireworks and strings of lights.

A beautiful and memorable book.
Pacovska's story transcends age, and her artwork isextraordinary. I fell in love with the red-nosed king at firstglance, and this book is one of my all-time favorites. As the king searches for his princess and his happiness (which he finds), Pacovska's images work their magic on your memory, leaving a permanent and precious impression.

Haunting Illustrations
The first time I saw this book was in a book store, where I flipped through it and was immediately caught by Lisbeth Zwerger's dreamlike illustrations - the image of the calm forever-lasting night, the giant old moon lady with pale round face and black overcoat moving slowly with curious little hobbin in his crib - the atmosphere is superbly presented by the water-colour in a form that I have never seen in other children books. Although there are only 6 full pages of picture plus some smalll ones, I personally think some of them are simply the best among zwerger's. If I didn't see it in the book store and compare it to other Zwerger's work, I wouldn't have bought it think of the few pages it has.

Penguin Pete is great!
The books in the Penguin Pete series are great! My son (who will be 3) has enjoyed these book for over a year. However, they are meant for children older than this. My son is fascinated with animal books and stories and we read bigger kid books to him. He still enjoys them.

A beautiful children's book
This is one of the best books my five year old daughter and I have ever read. We first got it out of the library, but I just ordered it because it's a book I know we'll re-read hundreds of times. Everybody knows the Grimm's story: twelve princesses escape every night to go dancing. Their father, the king, doesn't know where they go, only that that in the morning their dancing shoes are in tatters. He offers the hand of one of his daughers in marriage to any suitor who can discover their secrets. Many try, and finally one succeeds. There are two wonderful things about this version. One is that it's clear at the end of the book that the daughter who is chosen doesn't marry the man who figured out their secret. She chooses him „ and plans to keep right on dancing after she gets married! The second great thing about this book is the illustrations, which are so beautiful, you just want to look at them again and again. More important, the princesses are all beautiful, but in exotic and interesting ways. No one size fits all Disneyesque beauties here. Each face is unique. One even wears glasses! Terrific book.

A visually beautiful rendition of a timeless tale
"When I was a young girl, I had long braids, and always wanted to be Rapunzel," confided a colleague at a recent meeting. Paul Zelinsky's Caldecott award-winning retelling of this age-old tale of a mother-to-be's craving for the forbidden rapunzel, a possessive sorceress, a beautiful girl with an unending cascade of silky hair shut away in a remote tower, and a handsome prince just might reawaken those desires. In his informative "Note About Rapunzel ," Zelinsky relates how he drew on elements from the early French and Italian sources as well as from the better known Grimm version of this tale to create his own compelling version. Thus, some details of the story are less familiar. Rapunzel naively reveals that she has had a visitor in the tower when she asks the sorceress to help her with her dress for, "It is growing so tight around my waist, it doesn't want to fit me anymore." Other elements, retold in their familiar spare rhythm, such as "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!" retain ther original power. Zelinsky uses the formal beauty of Renaissance art to evoke both the physical beauty of the characters and the Italian landscape. His large oil paintings overflow with softly muted colors, billowing folds of finely detailed period costumes, ornate architecture, and majestic landscapes. His masterful use of glinting and filtering light illuminates every page. Zelinsky's Rapunzel is a book to be treasured by anyone who appreciates a timeless tale and delights in an object of visual beauty.

Beautiful illustrations and a traditional retelling
Paul O. Zelinsky's "Rapunzel" is a delight of renaissance-like oil paintings depicting a delicately beautiful girl, a frightening witch, and a handsome prince. The illustrations are truly superb, and each page features a beautifully rendered painting rich with color and detail.

Zelinsky's retelling of the story is traditional yet satisfying, but the illustrations really steal the show. Children will get caught up in the fairytale landscapes and the magical locales. Readers will also appreciate the additional information provided by Zelinsky about his retelling of the story and his study of Italian Renaissance art. It's always nice to know why artists choose to illustrate stories in a certain way.

This book won the Caldecott Medal for its fantastic illustrations.

A superbly detailed version of a traditional tale.
An excellent choice for many ages. This book is a beautiful and rich rendition of a traditional tale. Zelinsky has filled the pages with orderly, exquisitie details that are reminescent of Renaissance paintinings. The illustrations merit review closely and the reader will find new wonders each time they visit the work. Children of all ages will find enjoyment in these pages. Readers may particularly enjoy the intricate tower Rapunzel is locked in. The text has just enough suspense and evil and good strike a comfortable balance for chlidren.
