A valuable and honest memoir of integration in the U.S. Navy
Adolph Newton joined the U.S. Navy during the Second World War by forging his parents signatures. In the service he became one of the first Black machinist's mates (MM) and was assigned to a maintenance unit in the Philippines. After the war, he reeenlisted in the Navy and served on a repair ship. His memoir is honest and personal, and includes frank descriptions of looking for (and finding) women and liquor in liberty ports around the world. Occasionally he even had to stand up for his right to fight for his country. He did suffer gratuitous racial insults and unfair discipline, and speaks candidly about his opinions about white folks. An interesting touch is his love of jazz and popular music; MM Newton frequently recalls what songs were popular at a particular time and even takes credit for exposing other sailors on his repair ship to bebop. The main shortcomings of this book can be laid to the publisher : no index, no maps, and no glossary. Overall, strongly recommended for those interested in the integration of the U.S. Navy and the common life of the naval enlisted man. Parents : if your child wants to use this for a school report, read it FIRST.

Dictators in the Mirror of Medicine: Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin

Insight on 3 Villains of History
This book consists of biographies/medical histories of the three dictators Napoleon, Hitler and Stalin. Of the three, perhaps Napoleon comes across as the better man, but considering the other two that he is compared against, that is not much of a compliment.
What struck me about all three men was their utter ruthlessness and greed for power. Napoleon sacrificed his army in hopeless wars without any remorse, along with Hitler and Stalin. But Hitler and Stalin also participated directly in the murder of innocent civilians for reasons that only could make sense to someone hungry for power and paranoid to the extreme.
Dr. Neumayr reviews their lives, their physical ailments, and to a certain extent their mental health. But by no means is this a book that rambles on with page after page of suppositions and hastily drawn conclusions. To be sure, the mental health of all three is questioned, but were they insane? After reading about the millions of lives that these men took, and the misery caused for their countries, it is even more chilling to know that they knew exactly what they were doing.
All three paid the price for their murder, deceit and immorality. Dr Neumayr examines their physical health, and toward the end of their lives they all suffered from many physical ailments, some directly caused by the stress that their ambitions placed on them. But the suffering they had was as nothing compared to the suffering they caused.
I have also read Dr. Neumayer's three-volume biography/medical history of the great classical music composers. If your interest in famous people goes beyond learning a few facts about their lives, then these books will certainly be of interest to you. Highly recommended!

The Great War at Sea: A History of Naval Action, 1914-18

MAKES FOR AN INTERESTING STORY
A.A.Hoehling is a good story teller, so it is no surprise that this book comes off as quite interesting. World War I naval action is described from the battle of two ocean liners early in the war to the scuttling of the German fleet after the armistice. He gives considerable attention, as he should, to the battles of Jutland and the Falklands.
I have only two problems with this book, and neither are very serious. First of all, The War At Sea lacks the detail one might find in other books on the subject. This could be a fault or a blessing, depending on one's outlook. If someone is looking for a general overview, the book is fantastic. But if heavy analysis and data is the reader's cup of tea, it should be avoided.
It could also be argued that Hoehling concentrates a little too much on the American side of the war. WWI naval action was mostly a British-German event. But as most works so far have indeed talked about this angle exclusively, perhaps Hoehling is justified.

Kaleidoskop - A good mix of topics
I am a student in my third year of German tutoring and this is my fourth text book. It is refreshingly different when compared to the other texts that I have used to date. It mixes in relatively current articles from magazines and utilizes videotape to help with listening exercises. We have not used the audio tapes at all. It has a good variety of topics and exercises that are supported by the grammar sections at the rear of the text. The grammar is not embedded in the chapters. Instead, it is in sequential sections at the end of the book which correspond to the chapter progression at the start of the book. I definitely prefer it over the Themen and Wie Geht's books.

A must-read for travelers to Denali park
Adolph Murie was a naturalist who spent most of his career, and most of this century working in Denali park in Alaska. I heard about him from the tour guides while taking the bus tour through the park. He is their paton saint. The book tells various stories about the various animals Murie studied. It wonderfully captures the sense of that great park and the wildlife that dwells within. After reading his book, I'm inspired to make my next trip to Denali a camping trip where I sit on a high ridge with my binoculars and camera and watch.

Oil Sand Scientist
This book provides a detailed account of the initial experiences associated with processing Tar Sands. The author does not limit the discussion to scientific concerns. Personalities, alliances, difficulties, and friendships are also mentioned.

In the scientific realm, the difficulties involved in the conversion from a batch process to a semi-continuous process are clearly described. Additionally, the methodology of breaking the water-oil emulsion layer is detailed. Use of the same chemicals may not be reasonable today for health and safety reasons.

This book would be valuable for those who wish to understand the difficulties in handling Tar Sands. The discussions are a bit verbose for many from the current scientific community. I rated the book 4 stars because those within the scientific community that treat Tar Sands will find the book invaluable and those who wish to understand some of the development history of Alberta will also benefit. I am buying the book after reading it at the library because it will be a handy reference.

The Only Land I Know: A History of the Lumbee Indians

Great history of a little-known Native American tribe
My father is a Lumbee who was born and raised in Pembroke, North Carolina. Unfortunately, in California, it's next to impossible to find out information on the Lumbee Indians in any general text on Native Americans. This book, along with "To Die Game" (which I first read as a teenager) are the two best resources on Lumbee history I have run across.Like many people out there, I've always wanted to know something about my ancestors, and Mr. Dial seems to know just about everything. I've never met him but he is spoken very highly about by my relatives, and upon reading "The Only Land I Know" I can see why!

Coming off the family farm and joining the South African merchant marine at age 15, he was influenced to join the Royal Air Force in the 1930's. He not only accepted the challenges put before him, but distinguished himself as a tireless leader. Judging from the comments of his peers, he was hands-down the best shot among fighter pilots of his time.
