"I Am Haunted By Waters."
If you recognize with reverence this closing passage from Norman Maclean's classic "A River Runs Through It", you will equally treasure "On The Spine Of Time". It is a story of finding one's self in the beauty and solitude of the mountain streams of the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. The stories are as much about the history of the area as they are about the experiences of one man as he seeks retreat from the trauma of everyday life in the city. It is a book you will read over and over. In decades of reading outdoor stories I have only found two other books that are as beautiful as this one. The first and greatest has to be Maclean's masterpiece from which I stole the title for this review. The other is John Hersey's "Blues". I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.

Small World
THE BRIGHT COUNTRY is a heartbreakingly beautiful, sad, hilarious, touching book that flows and burbles along like a favorite trout stream. I've probably bought 6-8 copies of the book over the years and loaned, given or otherwise forced it upon at least twice that number of people. It's not a perfect novel, but is easily the most honest look I've ever encountered into the heart of a guy I wish I'd had the opportunity to know. There's more than a little bit of trout fishing, but this is a book that hooks non-anglers as well.

A Bright Ending
I can't write Harry Middleton to tell him how much I admire his writing, or how much his stories and themes resonate in me. He died not long ago. And if I may quote Russell Chatham, "It hurts to know that Harry Middleton rode the back of a garbage truck every night during the wee hours to put groceries on his family's table." It's true. It's part of this story.

This is the moving, affecting story of Middleton's struggle with depression, his mother's death of brain cancer, and, most memorably, a blind trout on the South Fork of the Platte River. Like all of Middleton's books, the language is wonderful and the characters are memorable. Perhaps more so than most, this book is Middleton laying his soul bare, telling a story as it happened, cutting close to the bone.

And if flyfishing isn't the whole story here, it is part of the path to redemption.

Harry, we hardly knew you, and I wish there had been more time, and more books. But you will live on for me and for those readers who discover you. Ollie ollie oxen free.

Master Work by A Master Writer
This is one of the best books I've ever read. Harry Middleton is one of those great writers few have heard of. His books are moving and inspirational. Rivers Of Memory, one of Middleton's last books, is full of wonderful warm tales of the outdoor life. If you liked "A River Runs Through It" you will also love this book. Few were published and now it is long out of print. It is very rare. I asked the publisher if it would ever be published again and they said not for a long, long time. I seen copies of this book go for[money]. Buy and read this book.

No other text even approaches the truth about mental illness the way the renowed scholar & Duke graduate, Harry Gottesfeld, does. You owe it to yourself to get this book.

Written by the foremost authority in human development.
This text book, used all over the world, skillfully explains "abnormal psychology".This text book reaches its goal of educating laymen in the science of abnormal psychology. As a professor, I cannot help but recommend this book. If you are ever going to read one book in your entire life, read this one.

AN ENJOYABLE READ ON AN IMPORTANT SUBJECT
This text book is one of the best written books in the world on the subject of abnormal psychology. The charm of the book is that it points out that what is "abnormal" changes as the culture changes. It helps you to understand what & why and what will be. This text is really loved by all my students at the university.

Harry the Dirty Dog is the best book I ever read as a child
Browsing through the internet, I found Harry the Dirty Dog. Harry was my favorite book as a child. I am 35 years old now, and I have rarely read anything that makes you feel this good. Harry is a great Dog. He made me feel loved, and I still like the way he hid his scrub brush under his favorite pillow. I still remember in vivid detail, the pictures of when he slid down the cole shoot and changed from a white dog with black spots to a black dog with white spots. I still love Harry. In fact, I'll stop by the local book store on my way home and buy my niece a new copy. ( Believe it or not, I have Harry the Dirty Dog packed with the rest of my old College Text Books ). I still love you Harry.

Sweet dog, sweet family, sweet story
I love the Harry the Dirty Dog series! A great story for kids and adults who like to read a good children's book.

Harry is an adorable white dog with black spots (as is repeated throughout all of the Harry books)... and he's always getting dirty. His entire family loves him and he loves them right back. Even when he's dirty, Harry is still family... which makes a great parable for parents explaining to their children that while they may not be happy when their kids mess up, they are still loved nonetheless.

The illustrations of this happy dog frolicking around are absolutely precious. The story is endearing and I have my copy sitting on my coffee table.

Harry the dirty dog is a classic kid's story
I remember reading this book when I was in school and I always enjoyed it.

Harry takes off from his family, and gets so dirty they don't recognize him. He has a fun time around town, but when he realizes his family does not know him, he needs to have a bath to prove that he is their dog.

This is a cute story, which my 7 year old loves to read over and over. A five star read for kids of any age.

A truly beautiful work that will stand the test of time.
Harry should take his place next to other great authors. Themessage that this book carries is in the depth of caring and auniversal consideration for life, along with the message that these things do not come from the material comforts on which we have we have come to depend. I think of this book and its lessons often in this era when our children eat drugs like candy, flock to the artificiality of backsteet urban culture and shoot each other just to "belong". I think it offers a moral reality that they yearn for. I agree with the reviewer from WA, this should be made by Redford into a movie. Maybe with Newman or Ralph Waite with some of the old" Walton" cast (especially the narrator). Does anyone know how to contact him? This book will remain number one on my bookshelf. Its too bad we lost Harry so early. Now we have to hope some publisher will buy the rights and re-issue "Starlight Creek Angling Society" so the rest of us can read the continuing saga.

Amazing
This book has it all. It's funny, touching, beautifully written, easy to read, contains life lessons - what more could you want? And I don't even fly fish!!! Buy it, read it, keep it, re-read it. I first read it years ago, and keep buying copies as gifts.

Salvation in the Ozarks
The first time I read this book, I kept it and sent the library the money. The second time I read it, I wrote my senior thesis comparing Middleton's home-style tale with William Wordsworth's nature poetry. The third time, I wrote Mr. Middleton to tell him about... well, just to tell him. Unknown to me, he had passed away the previous year. I don't know the circumstances, but I like to think that Harry passed away doing what The Earth is Enough shows he loved most, tempting the deep trout with a home-spun fly and the love of all things wild.

Men and women work and live normally inside their spacecrafts, but it is all much more complicated than that. Harry Stine has written a book devoted to these matters and he does so in a beautifully and lively manner. We will learn about space medicine, space villages and many more interesting topics. Easy to read, Living In Space is a very useful handbook for those people who want to look the subject from a new perspective.

Hardness Testing

Authors: Harry Chandler and Asm International
Amazon base price: $131.00
Average review score:

Better than the Previous Edition
Even with substantial improvements over the previous edition, this is one of the few ASM publications that does not live up to expectations. While the very basics of hardness testing are covered, the book addresses testing from a manufacturing/production/quality control perspectve, and does not focus adequately on the test as mechanical property evaluation. Hopefully one more iteration of this text will put it at the class of reference book we have come to expect from ASM.
