Not exactly like the movie, but still excellent!
A few differences between this book and the movie (thanks to Hollywood). This is an excellent book. If you like/love the movie, this would definately be worth getting your hands on. It shows more of the brutatlity of Top Dollar's hoodlums. If you only want it if it is EXACTLY like the movie, don't get it. But even still, it's close enough to be tolerable. Just remember, the movie was based off of this comic. :o)

Great book
This is the best book ive ever read!!!!

Beginning of an epic tragedy.
The Crow: Pain & Fear (Book 1) begins the epic journey of a young rockstar who is killed along with his girlfriend by a band of criminals. The book shows Eric Draven realizing who he has become and why, and what he must do. Guided by the ever mysterious Crow. This book is full of mature language and strong imagery, detailing Eric's revenge of the trauma caused him one year ago on Devil's Night. Truly a grand work of art.

A "must" for your library
I have been a pilot for a regional airline for three years and only just happened upon this book recently; I wish I'd known about it earlier. Extremely informative and "reader friendly" with practical and easy-to-apply methods of using airborne radar to its fullest potential, this book should be required in every ground school and is a must for all pilots who utilize radar in their day-to-day operations.

Very informative reading
After reading this book I feel very comfortable with using airborne radar. Mr. Barr uses easy to read text to deliver his points. He also uses pictures to explain his points which is very helpful. I would recommend this book to anybody who flies airplanes with weather radar.

Another successful graphic novels for O'Barr
James O'Barr nevers ceases to amaze me with his beautiful words put together with incredible artwork to give the reader more insight to the story. I am thrilled that the tale of Eric and Shelly has been expanded to so many other horizons but the actual story has to be my favorite above all others. I definitely recommend this book to any reader who would like to experience more of the mystical world that James O'Barr has created.

First Classic Apologetics book.
We have this book online: http://truthinheart.com
It has now been about one hundred and sixty years since the first publication of perhaps the greatest apologetics book of all times. It is true that there are many fine books suited for their specific objects, and not less true that many valuable books have fulfilled a particular demand in the needful evidences for the Christian Evangelical Faith; but none can be found that has so comprehensively covered the ground in a way that not only reaches all essential beliefs or doctrines necessary for life in this world and that to come, but that also has been so recognized by the church at large to be so. When we come to this volume and are delightfully and almost magnetically carried through it, we soon find that it is not such a piece of the puzzle that books before it were, but rather it satisfies the heart and mind of the candid inquirer quenching his universal and systematic desires for the unified system of belief.
In the introduction below, we are informed that the arguments presented in this volume are largely independent of other works and not borrowed. Notwithstanding the style and harmony of all the chapters however, it can be seen through the works we are publishing that the major ideas were borrowed from worthy and spiritually sympathetic authors just previous to the first publication. And much more than Darwin, who organized an unsystematized-and unfortunately false-natural philosophy into a compelling system which thus gave it credibility, our author gives us more than a coherent hypothesis yet to be verified, but rather a presentation that unifies the subjects of the highest importance with the best demonstrations from all the important departments of the mind and life.
Those familiar with Asa Mahan's encyclopedic writings on all major branches of philosophy will find a very close identity of presenting the philosophical ideas in this book. Equally manifest will be the relation to Charles G. Finney's understanding of reformation and disinterested benevolence. And while Jonathan Edwards first presented this last idea less developed, our author no doubt also borrows much from him in his analysis of the Affections. We will finally notice but one more author, Caleb Burge, whose monumental work on the Atonement in 1822 must have had influence on the illustrations given in this work.
These men all shared the same moral government and orthodox understanding of the Plan of Salvation, and their profound works in our opinion helped to elevate society and the church to a higher level than it ever knew and has since known. The reason is plain-not that they invented new ideas, or were clever to manipulate men by sophestry-on the contrary, they simply acknowledged their true limitations, sought answers from all facts available, depended upon no unverified evidence, focused on essential matters in the nature of their circumstances, and insisted upon no weak arguments, but gave us an impartial, coherent, system of practical truth that was only to convince an honest mind.
Some years back we endeavored to compile a similar work, not yet being familiar with this. It is now wondered whether that work would not be a disservice to the subjects defended in comparison with this masterpiece. We do not see the need to improve our work to this level, and are convinced that the world and the church do not need anything further to be satisfied with the objects of this book. In the future it will thus be our desire to only slightly adapt this work to our day (as this was a book for the times) in a recording of this volume for tapes and CD.

The Semantics of Biblical Language
Published in Paperback by Trinity Pr Intl (September, 1991)
Author: James Barr
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

a classic study on biblical interpretive procedures
The need for this study arose due to the popularity of a movement known as "biblical theology" which relied heavily on certain interpretive procedures which constantly mishandled or distorted the linguistic evidence. Although the author is not interested in critisizing biblical theology itself, he is interested in critisizing certain methods used in the handling of linguistic evidence used in theological discussion. This book is a critique on those interpretive methods.

In biblical interpretation there exists not only the problem of translation, but also the problem of transculturation, which means we must consider the gaps between not only a Semitic language, an Indo-European language (Greek), and our own modern language, but also the gaps between the Ancient Near East, the Roman Empire, and our own modern culture. The author observes that it is doubtful that any other sphere of life other than the theological has so many people without special training who continually attempt a semantic transference across such gaps.

While the author assumes that the reader will have a basic understanding of Hebrew and Greek, he actually writes more to "the middle of the road" in order to reach as wide an audience as possible, and is neither overly technical nor too simplistic. As such, even those who have no training in the biblical languages will be able to benefit from reading it. For instance, the chapter on contrast of Hebrew and Greek thought, which is quite informative, uses no foreign terms.

This book, which was first published in 1961, has withstood the test of time, and the interpretive knowledge contained within its pages is just as pertinent today as when it was first written. This is a classic study and should be required reading for serious students of the Bible.

Authentic presentation
I served on the USS Barr and experienced the events and times described in this book. I can attest to its accuracy and attention to details. The diary of James Grenga, Yeoman 1st class and brother of the author,Helen E. Grenga, tells it as it was. If you are interested in the events of World War11,this is a must read book, and an appendex to Tom Brokow's "Greatest Generation".

Great Book Worth Reading
I was very happy to see the amount of research that went into writing this book. Dr. Grenga has provided only verifiable details of the men and their life on the USS Barr. By doing so she has created a permanent memory for our soldiers who defended us during WWII. His brother was one of soldiers who served our nation. Her account of Sailor's diary is not only true but makes an interesting reading. This book uncovers another facet of the life on the ship for our brave soldiers.

Heroes on the Fantail
A wonderful historical depiction of life on a US Naval ship, the USS Barr, during the tumultuous period of World War II. The author has gone beyond the task of publishing the diary of one man's account-his diary of everyday events on the Barr.
I find it fascinating to read a book about World War II written in the crew's own words. I found Movies on the Fantail excellent reading and a recommended educational resource for history students as well.

The book everyone should own....

James O'Barr went through so much despair and sorrow during the writing of this book. And to think that something so beautiful and tear-jerking could come from his pain adds a more realness to it.

I've read this book about 4 times through and each time I read it, I fall more in love with it. The imagery the words create, the harsh- edged strokes from the pictures themselves, and the meaning behind the story, are what makes"The Crow" so magnificant

Beyond Words.
When this comic originally came out in late 1989, I was one of the few people I knew that bought it. Many friends of mine thought I was crazy to have bought a comic -no one- had heard of. Little did they know that 5 short years later, EVERYONE would know the name of the comic and its author, James O'Barr. The comic has yet to see an equal, at least in my opinion, and has enthralled thousands upon thousands of people with its violent, yet simple message. True love can not be stopped or erased. Love lives on, regardless of whether the people who have that love live. Having read this series (all 4 of the original prints and the fifth in graphic novel form,) O'Barr never ceases to amaze. The anguish and pain that one man can go through to be one with his eternal and true love can be quite daunting. Also, any of the original novels written by Poppy Z. Brite, David Bischoff, and the rest in that series are well worth reading. Thanks for your time. --B--

This is the best comic ever written...
and I mean that. I don't care about the negative things people have to say about the artwork. Try drawing yourself, you develop your own, personal style, and that of J. O'Barr is a most unique style. To anyone intersted in the movie, get the comic book that started it all. To anyone interested in a pain so strong that death cannot stop it, this is a story for you. I've always looked for something that related to me closely and until I found the crow I was lost. He tells the story as well as any book I've ever read (by the way, don't make yourself suffer and skip around David Bishoff's "Quoth the Crow") and Eric's insane, poetic character puts a kick into the world of the crow.

Irony And Despair(The Crow part 2)
It annoys me when people base their reviews on how much like the film the book is, the book came first didn't it? anyway, this is an inspiring piece of art which brings together all of the hurt and pain and anger which one feels when a loved one has been lost, and does it in an exciting and thought-provoking way, wouldn't we all love to be Eric for a while, taking revenge on the scum of society? I would, especially when somebody decides to run a key down the side of my car... I think that is where a lot of the appeal of the book comes from, a license to be a vigilante and take revenge. A very enjoyable and emotionally affecting book.

This book combines a fascinating story with beautiful art.
The Crow, Irony and Despair, is the continuance of the tale of Erik, a murdered man brought back to avenge the rape and murder of his fiancee, Shelly. It is a compelling mixture of dark imagery through drawings, poetry, and dialogue/narration. The images are shown shattered, which is reflective of the shattering of Erik and Shelly's lives. There are flashes of memory, and scenes of revenge. It is thoroughly satisfying, and may even lead to a few tears. I highly recommend it for anyobdy who can handle the mature images and language. Do not be turned away from the fact it is a comic book-it is better than most true books I have read.

The Crow : Clash by Night

excellent
this was one of the best books i'd ever read i would tell anyone to read it.because it just shows if you love and care for somebody anything can happen for you if you believe.

The Crow lives on in this book.
If you liked the movie or original graphic novel, you are bound to love this book. It deals with the raw emotion of having all you love stripped away, and all that's left is vengence.

Very Good Read
I feel that this volume in the Summer set of Crow novels was the best. It definantly was the longest of the 3, for the most part due to Chet Williamson taking more time to setup and explore than the other authors did. Once I hit chapter 25 there was no stopping me as I had to finish the novel after reading chapter 25 that evening. There are familiar characters used, like ANOTHER policeman helping out, but despite the lack of originality there I felt the story was fresh and capturing. I am more and more becoming a big fan of Chet Williamson. I highly recommend anyone to pick up the new Crow anthology book "Shattered Lives & Broken Dreams" and read Mr Williamson's short story in it. He has definantly become one of the best at telling Crow related stories.
