Histology: A Text and Atlas: Image Bank
Published in Hardcover by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Publishers (January, 2003)
Author: Michael H. Ross
Amazon base price: $695.00
Average review score:

Great Text, Poor Atlas
This book was one of two required for a graduate course in Histology. If you must take a Histology course in graduate school or medical school, I would recommend purchasing a separtate atlas, especially if you are a novice or have limited availability to quality slides. I personally recommend diFiore because it has multiple atlas plates for each tissue with different magnifications and stains. It is also reasonably priced. The text in Ross is very well written and presents the material in a compact, to the point style. This allows the student to learn the material without searching for what is and is not important.

Very good
I liked the book very much for it has Histology with some Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology included. Of course these text takes space from the book and reduces the amount of slides but each slide is given similar information and not just identification. Time to time comparative information. I found this book very useful when compared to simple Histology Atlases. You may need another Histology Atlas for more pictures if you are interested but this book is very simple and to the point all encompassing

Super Histo Text for Medical Students
This book doesn't assume that you have an extensive background. The first year medical student who was a liberal arts major can read through this book once and know histology as good (or better) than a student with a master's degree in anatomy! The chapters flow very logically, allowing the reader to make the all-important integration of various regions of the body and the processes/histology associated with them. Furthermore, every page has photomicrographs and/or drawings which allow the reader to have not only a more complete understanding of the material, but a clinically useful knowledge of the proper appearance of tissues. This book leaves nothing out and is, at least at the medical school I attend, unanimously agreed to be the best histo book available.

This book saved me over $400 on my first trip
I just got back from an unbelievable trip to Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. My flight from the USA to Singapore was only $400 round trip. The airlines were charging between $800 and $2000. I stayed in Southeast Asia for an extra month on the money I saved.

I recommend this book for people who want to travel more, but need a good deal in order to do it.

You won't find this information on the Web!
This very useful and tightly written guide explores every aspect of cheap travel, including flight consolidators, couriers, and charters. It's the first book I've ever seen that explains the complex business of airline ticket pricing and arms you with knowledge that lets you beat the airlines at their own game. If you're adventurous and super thrifty, you can even learn how to fly for free!

There's a huge listing of airfare discounters and other dirt-cheap travel resources, arranged by hub city. McColl provides a mini-guide for each locale, along with tips on low-cost meals and lodging, recommended stopovers, and offbeat sights to see. This isn't your standard travel faire, either -- the travel writing is as witty and down-to-earth as any Lonely Planet or Moon-series guide.

Do not--repeat--do not think you can find all this stuff on the Internet.

I know of no site or group of sites that can provide so many low-cost travel airfare strategies in one quick and easy reference. It's a good read -- and it will definitely save you money.

It really helps!
I found this book to be a big help. It gave me more than travel tips. Its real value comes from the author's ability to give the reader an idea on how the travel industry works. Sure, there are the tried and true strategies (i.e., getting bumped) but there are other angles recommended by the author that are less obvious and of great value.

A Unique Insider's Perspective
Having read other books (Den of Thieves, Barbarians at the Gate, etc.) written on some of the other deals which took place in the late eighties and early nineties, I was looking forward to something similar with "Dead Bank Walking."

While the book certainly delivers an informative account of Security Pacific's rise and eventual merger with Bank of America, it also offers the perspective of one of the deal's main decision makers. Instead of the 'Monday Morning Quarterback' approach of most business retrospectives, Smith offers the reader the opportunity to understand all of the factors which influenced this mega-merger and the eventual aftermath.

I'd recommend this book to anyone involved in the financial services industry or considering a career in finance.

Everything you never knew about M&A
Dead Bank Walking gives a very candid and sobering insight into the merging of two banking bohemoths: Security Pacific and Bank of America. People who choose to purchase this book will be thrust into a world of high stakes finance, replete with sometimes brutally honest depictions of the people involved in one the biggest banking mergers in history. Mr. Smith holds nothing back and does a brilliant job of placing the reader directly in the line of fire...basically, in his shoes! His narrative is very descriptive and positively enthralling. Although armed with a seemingly unending supply of wacky characters (including downright white-collar criminals, pompous executives and bloated know-it-all middle managers), Smith avoids the easy way out of making this a diatribe of how unfairly he was treated, rather he takes great pains to illustrate the personal sacrifices others were forced to make in the best interest of the shareholders. Unfortunately, this places the author in an extremely difficult position and what transpires is nothing short of miraculous.
This book is an absolute nail-biter that will surprise you. You definitely would not expect this from a book about "some bank merger that happened 10 years ago out in California." If you work in the business world, especially in the banking industry, you must read this work of passionate dedication and self-sacrifice. The book's in-your-face comments and insight, peppered with self-depricating wit, will make you forget you're reading a book about "business," making it read more like a Oliver Stone screenplay.

A unique and riveting glimpse inside the executive suite
Dead Bank Walking is a fascinating account of the rise and demise of a stalwart California Bank. Smith's narration is personal, and it eloquently captures the excess and arrogance that accompanied big business in the 80's. More importantly, it brings the complexity of senior management decision making to life by providing the content and detail required for the reader to effectively walk in the shoes of this aggressive CEO. Smith takes you inside the emotional roller-coaster of his mega-merger. From the comedic meetings with the period's renegade personalities to the devastating effects FIRREA's fine print had on Security Pacific's solvency, this book is a great read. You won't put it down!

Redefines the meaning of "boring"
I was the struggling not to fall asleep the whole time. Terrible, dry language. Not a single practical piece of advice. I was bored to tears.

not exciting but surely useful
I was slightly intimidated because the previous reviewer (anonymous) gave it such a scathing review (stating it was boring and useless) - but I ordered it from Amazon nevertheless since it is so highly rated and a (according to a friend) best seller on the subject. OK, so it isn't the most exciting read on the planet, but useless? Hardly! I found that when I applied the information with the other standard books on offshore that it was extremely useful as a selection tool. There is a lot of information contained in the 300 pages. I suggest that if readers seek excitement that they go see a film. If someone wants a book about choosing an offshore tax haven (even if boring), this is worth the price.

Wonderful Guide for a Novice Offshore Investor
I have never used an Offshore as I thought it too difficult and complicated. After reading other published material on the topic, I still did not know enough to proceed. However, after reading Dr. Grosh's book, I believe it is something that I can make use of.

I would like to thank Dr. Grosh for writing such an easy to read and understand book on such a complicated subject. The advice and guidance provided are proving invaluable to me.

I purchased a copy for my financial advisor so we can work together on this.

Second Stage Advanced Model Rocketry
Published in Paperback by Kalmbach Publishing Company (May, 1991)
Authors: Michael Banks and Burr Angle
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:

Interesting but dated in many ways
This edition has some interesting aspects of model rocketry for the hobbyist who is ready for some new ideas and directions. Unfortunately many of the chapters retained from the first edition are now seriously dated. The photographs are also dated and in at least one case, in the wrong chapter. Most notably missing are any websites for sources, organizations and companies which would expand on a hobbyists knowlege of these advanced topics more effectively than the limited coverage in the book.

A wonderfully written and an insightful book...
This book was very well written and well worth the money. The ease of reading and the knowledge offered makes this a must have for a novice rocketeer.

I was drawn into advanced model rocketry after building my first couple Estes models. Luckily, I came across this book which gave me valuable information on planning and constructing my own model rockets. Not only that but the book offers hints for succesful aerial photography, computer programs to help you with planning your rocket, plans for theodolites to measure the height of your rocket, launch controller circuits, and a lot more!

If you're looking to make that "next" step into model rocketry, this is the book for you.

An Excellent Book for Serious Rocketeers!
The second edition of this important book is worth having as a reference guide and as an idea generator. The author writes clearly and is an obvious expert in the field. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to "push the outside of the envelope" of model rocketry.

Comprehensive Textbook of Foot Surgery (2 vol. set)
Published in Hardcover by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins (15 January, 1992)
Authors: E. Dalton McGlamry, Alan S. Banks, and Michael S. Downey
Amazon base price: $325.00
Used price: $132.15
Average review score:

Good comprehensive coverage, but overly wordy.
Textbook is a good summary of all types of foot and ankle surgery, but it tends to get overly wordy and bogged down with some of the history behind many of the surgical procedures. Book is also heavily politically weighted to make some procedures look very positive and other procedures to look like they should never be performed. Overall, I think it could have been better written, but if you can sift through all the triteness of the text, it is a valuable tool to understanding most of the facets of foot surgery.

The most comprehensive and readible book about foot surgery
There is no other "one book to read" about the subject than this one. Excellent.

A view on this book from an on location expert...
A near excellent review of the Asian Crisis. Chapter 2 by Richard Cooper is especially good. Here in some 12 pages you can get a clear overview of what went wrong. Chapter 3 is a rather lengthy tedious study; the conclusions are clear however: mostly Asian corporate managers are to blame for the crisis. As they took on more and more financial leverage even while net profit margins kept sinking during the boom period of 1992 to 1996. Or at the very least "deficiencies in their risk managment practices greeatly exacerbated it" (the crisis).

What most of these type of books miss however is how large global institutional investors ignored values in SE Asia's stock markets. This in the fanatic pursuit of liquidity. It helped create ignoring of values and incredible overpricing of liquid equities here, until it all crashed.

Even while profitability of Asian companies deteriorated, p/e ratios on most stock exchanges kept rising due to foreign money coming in masses. If Asian managers are to fault, what does this say about global institutional investors? Why is this left out?

Paul A. Renaud.

Helping Hand
This book was a wonder for me. It really showed me what to do when a certain crisis strickes. It also told me how to react. Overall, it made some things much clearer for me.

This book is dated
This book is way out dated (1989). If you are looking for specific up to date information to open an account it's a waste of your time and money. If you want general information about the banking system then it's worth the read.

Undoubtedly the finest guide to Swiss bank accounts!
This book is clear, consise and expertly researched. I've read other books on the subject and found this to be the most helpful and enjoyable to read. I highly recommend it to anyone considering a Swiss bank account. This book will tell you exactly what you need to know.
