Along for the Ride: Some Thoughts on "One-Man Boat"
If you have seen the silent film, Nanook of the North, you might recall that moment when the protagonist arrives in his splendid kayak (also the name of George Hitchcock's near legendary literary journal from 1964-1984), he gets out of the boat and then, from within the boat emerge his wife, two or three children and possibly a husky or two -- on that my memory is not clear. And Story Line Press' masterful collection (edited by Robert McDowell, Joseph Bednarik, & Mark Jarmon, with introduction by Phil Levine, "One-Man Boat: The George Hitchcock Reader" accomplishes a similar effect -- out of this collection emerges George the poet, the playright, the actor, the editor, the novelist, the short story stylist, the witness before the HUAC, and on the cover, George, the painter. This selection from a significant body of work should serve as ample introduction to the work of a man, extraordinary by anyone's standards. This collection stands as testimony to a life lived in dedication to ideas about art and the full expression of art as a daily enterprise rather than some caged rarefied entity. I would hope this book becomes required reading for any serious student of late 20th century literature from the West Coast. I'll close with a paraphrase of one of my favorite poems, "Lying Now in the New Grass" -- the poem is an invocation of rest -- it is sensual and surreal. In its final image the "plow of night" passes over the world. I can think of no other way to spend a restful afternoon/early evening than to sit quietly with the magic of this book, a cup or glass of a favorite beverage, resting in the kayak of this book, with the capable hands of a master at the oars, be he Nanook, be he George -- don't let anyone fool you, it only looks like a one man boat -- it is filled with multitudes.

Excellent Source for the Backyard Observer
If you're a backyard or weekend wildlife observer, this is the perfect book for you. Put it in your backpack, pocket, glove box or camper and always be ready to identify! The illustrations are excellent and provide enough detail to know one similar frog from another. If you're looking for some biological detail, go for a bigger book, but this one is great for quick ID.

Easy to understand
Out of all of the pharm books I have used, this is the easiest to understand. Not as thorough as some but great. I recommend it. Wish I had it for the whole nursing program.

Should be required reading for all entry level ICU staff
I received this book as part of a purchase of a larger textbook. I've only read parts of the textbook, but have the entire text of the companion book several times. This book provides the most pertinent overview of several disease processes in the intensive care setting. I feel this book did a better job of preparing me for working ICU as an RN than any other text. It also figured heavily in my receiving some ofthe highest scores on the CCRN exam. I've loaned this book to many novice ICU RNs and have received similar reviews.

Wonderful debunker of running myths.
A refreshing read that gives the details about the lives and times of these three brillian men. It helps to debunk all the soot that has accumulated upon their work from the burning fires of conservatives and the religious right. The attempts to tarnish their names with accusations of anti-semitism and other prejudices fall flat in front of the facts. This book shows that people must deal with the political waves of their own times, but it does not necessarily make them of the same dogmatic ilk.

A MUST READ!
Forget Tom Peters and the other self-aggrandizing gurus and prophets of management whose insights into theoretical and social changes are as deep as a sheet of paper. David Boje has established himself as THE leading thinker in management and organization theory. Almost single-handedly, through his prolific writing and public talks, Boje has transformed the paradigms of the business world. Boje is to business and managment what Carl Sagan was to science: not only a gifted thinker and writer, but also an indispensible popularizer of crucial disciplinary changes. This book, co-authored with prestigious colleagues, brings the business world into contact with feminism, critical theory, ecology (here Gephart offers major contribuions), and postmodernism in a sparkingly lucid manner. By now, every academic discipline has taken a postmodern turn, even business and management. This anthology explains what is at stake and offers the new maps and compasses for negotiating changes in advanced global capitalism and for democratizing the workplace. It is an invaluable teaching resource for all those interested in the paradigm shifts altering the theory and practice of business and management, and is fully accessible to a nonacademic business audience who want to keep apace with current changes. Indeed, anyone interested in postmodern theory and how it is hardly a passing "fad" would profit from understanding how postmodern insights play out in this field. From my own disciplinary standpoint in philosophy, I learned a great deal and I highly recommend this work.

Prime Time Law -- a great read!
I read "Prime Time Law" for my Society and Law class at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. It is formatted into essays written on different prime time television shows (i.e. Law & Order, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue, etc.). The book as a whole is an excellent analysis of how law and legal actions are portrayed on the small screen. An exception read for anyone interested in a theoretical analysis of such television programs.

A ValuableTime Saver
Pfeiffer did a great job in creating these forms! I am in private practice and find the forms to be very useful. They have helped me and my colleagues organize client information and saved us countless hours in creating specialized forms for our practice. I especially like the client questionnaires--there is a short and long version. Thanks

The Psychology and Physiology of Breathing: In Behavioral Medicine, Clinical Psychology, and Psychiatry (The Plenum Series in Behavioral Psychophysi)

yes, breathing and psychology are related
It is a great book. I studied with Dr Fried at San Francisco in 1988 and every comment he made was supported by adecuate and precisely background and many published papers. I may say if Dr. Fried did not mentioned in the book it is because it does not exist or nobody has ever writen abouth it. The book is full of facts, references, advises and a great dry sens of humor. It signals medical mistakes, contradictions in findings reported, circular arguments; and clarifies all the points in relation to breathing, phisiological changes and how they transform in psychological proceses and "mental disease". Yes types of migraine can be cured, high blood pressure, and a lot more. I was at a academic panel at the School of Psychology of the State University to review a training in breathing, yoga, and relaxation for the treatment of anxiety, and I look good by all the references I had on the relation between breathing and anxiety. A great book for any profesional on biofeedback, psychoterapy, medical general practitioner, and Psychiatrists.
