A Perfect Bedtime story book.
My two year old loves Barnyard Lullaby but can not resist closing her eyes to sleep as I read the last two lines on every-other page: "Go to sleep, my sweetheart, Tomorrow is a brand-new day". When we are not reading this story at bedtime, she loves to name the animals and make each one's sound.

The perfect lullaby
My 2 1/2 year old loves this book and song. The music is printed at the end - and it puts her right to sleep nearly every time. She sings the song whenever she is putting her animals to bed, and it is a lovely story! The illustrations are great for this age - I wholly recommend it!

Great songs, story, and illustrations.
This is one of a few books that get the "again, again" rating from my 3 year old. He loves the song and story and of course the animals. If is running too long its easy to skip a couple of animals and get to the end w/o compromising the story.

good bedtime book; also nice if you like bears or caves
Frank Asch's _Good Night Baby Bear_:

Baby Bear doesn't want to go to sleep in the cave. He has a litany of complaints/stalling tactics, including needing water, needing food, and needing to see the moon. Ingenious (and patient!) mother bear satisfies each request, and eventually mother bear and baby bear fall asleep happily.

A good offering from Frank Asch. Illustrations are bold and blocky, with nothing terribly intricate or cluttered about them. Text is easy to understand, with just a sentence or two on each page. Great for 2- and 3-year olds, maybe a solid bedtime book for 4- and 5-year olds as well.

I've used this as a bedtime book with my 2-year old many times, and he seems to like it quite a bit, though it's not his favorite.

Be sure to also check out Frank Asch's _Goodbye House_, which I think is his best book.

toddler favorite!
My son and I read this almost every night. The relationship between the mother and baby bear is so sweet and when baby bear gives his Mom a kiss on the nose at the end, my son does the same! Very sweet book with simple, pretty illustrations. This is one of our favorites.

Great bedtime book!
My daughter and I just checked this book out of the library, but a month isn't enough....so I am buying it for her for Chrstmas. The best part of the book is Mother Bear's loving way with her baby bear who doesn't want to go to sleep any more then my daughter does, but ultimately, sleep prevails...for both of them..:) Definitely reccomended!

A delightful game of "hide and seek"
Little Bird teaches Bear how to play "hide and seek," complete with covering his eyes, counting to ten, and, most importantly, taking turns. Later, when Little Bird is not around, Bear asks the moon to play. When it's Bear's turn to count, the moon "hides" behind a cloud. But when Bear can't find the moon, he first enlists the help of Little Bird, then all of the animals in the forest to help search for the moon.

This delightful book teaches toddlers and preschoolers several important lessons. First, they learn the rules of hide and seek, a quintessential childhood game. They can count to ten along with Bear and practice taking turns. And they learn the importance of cooperation and asking for help when you need it. Many books for children attempt to teach such life lessons in heavy-handed ways, but this one maintains its gentle tone throughout.

Great book for toddlers
Of all Frank Asch's books, this is our four year old daughter's favorite. She responds very well to the humor of the situation and loves the idea of playing with the moon.

Back when we first started reading to our daughter as a baby, she was very impatient and wouldn't sit for long stories. We were limited to board books that were very short and direct. Frank Asch's titles helped us show her that sitting for a whole story was worthwhile. Now she'll sit for much longer titles, but the whole Moon Bear series are still favorite re-reads!

My one year old would rate this a 5
She absolutely LOVES this book and my 3 year old even tries to get a hold of this book. I do not find the artwork appealing - the illustrations are very simplistic - but perhaps this is the quality that appeals to toddlers. It is also a repetitive story - each animal asks if they can go for a ride, each gets in the canoe, until finally with a moose on board it sinks and they all go for a swim. So, your kids may like this book even if you don't.

Great Bedtime Book
My 1-yr old daughter loves this book. Of course that means I have to read it about 3-4 times in a row at each setting! A good alternative (and shorter story) to "Goodnite Moon".

Skyfire by: Frank Asch
"One day bear looked out his window and saw a rainbow. He had never seen a rainbow before." Bear Tried to convince his friend little bird that the sky was on fire but little bird knew it was just a rainbow. So. the two friends went on an adventure to find "a pot of gold, and to put the fire out." This book is an awsome way to teach kids about the myth of the "Pot of gold at the end of the rainbow," and its a good way to have fun with two diffrent voices it's a wonderful story however I feel that the Author who is also the illistrater could have put a little more detail into the pictures but the less detail did not take away from the story.

skyfire
The book Skyfire was a very good children's book to read. The book is considered to be a good childeren's book because it is an interesting story for little childeren. It let's them explore their imagination. Skyfire is also a very good childeren's book because it uses words that little kids will understand. When I was younger I loved this book, I would read Skyfire over and over again. As a little kid, I always wondered if I could put out a rainbow by throwing water on it....

Disappointed
"I Can Blink" has an animal pictured on each page. Each animal has a hole cut out where the face should be. The idea is to use the hole to display your own (or the child's) face to make the animal faces as the book is read. The original was a stroke of genius in its design and simplicity. It was a wonderful, interactive way to read a book with a small child but, this version of the book falls short. The hole for your face is two inches in diameter. There is a mirror on the last page so that your face will show for the child (if you see the child's face) and if you hold the book a little distance from your face. Only half of the pages can use the mirror. I have read this book with several children between two and three years old (one child at a time, of course). I have not had a child attend to the fun of making animal faces with this version of the book. The only book that I know to compare it to is the original "I Can Blink" which measures 12"x8" and the 4" hole goes through the entire book, no mirror. The idea was to hold the book up to the face of the reader (or the listener) and do what the book describes the animal doing (I can sniff like a dog. I can shake my head like a horse. etc). The book could be read in front of a mirror so that the child could watch the fun while making the faces. The original was my son's favorite book (he's 17 years old and I still have it, held together with clear tape). I had so looked foreward to reading this book with other children. I was disappointed when the focal point of the book (the hole through which the mirror shows your face) was too small to hold the attention of the children that this book was meant for. This book lacks to ability to provide interaction as the original did. It would probably do for a child to play with alone or with toy animals. The original "I Can Blink" is a Five Star publication that encourages interaction between adult and child, but this version gets thumbs down from me.

All of my children love this book.
This book is one of the few that are geared perfectly for infants. Each page is a mask for you and your child to make believe you are an animal with. My youngest could make a noise for each animal in the book by the time she was 9 months old.

The Blue Balloon-What does it mean?
After reading The Blue Balloon by Frank Asch, I asked myself over and over again, what exactly was this book about? I wonder if the book has some connection with the Vietnam Era (published, 1971)? Why is the balloon green and not blue? It is difficult to pinpoint the plot or purpose of the story. It is my opinion, that the book is not appropriate for young children because of this. I also found it especially disturbing when the main character enters the scene with a gun. what is that telling our children? I guess, I simply do not understand the whole structure or purpose of this book. Can anyone explain? I value Frank Asch as a writer and he has written many wonderful books that are on my children's shelves, as well as, the shelves in my classroom. But, this book has me baffled!
