The purist edition!
This omnibus publishing of the Hitchhikers Quartet contains the first four books of the Hitchhikers Trilogy, considered the only true Trilogy by many purists. The series starts with the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, then continues with The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything and rounds out with So Long and Thanks For All the Fish. This is considered me many the core of the Guide's story, and that "Mostly harmless" takes the story in an unwanted direction and prematurely ends the series with the elimination of 3 of the main characters. Most hardcore Adams purists prefer to leave the story hanging with the possibility of the infinite possibilities possible in an infinite universe.

A great book, very enjoyable to read
This is a remarkable autobiography. I highly recommend it, especially to those considering entering the legal profession.
Liman is a superb writer who's easy-to-read style makes reading the book both an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. Most importantly, Liman vindicates the legal profession by stressing the important contribution that good lawyers can offer to society. He also provides interesting insight into his role as a defense lawyer in the Michael Milken case and as a key player in the investigations of the Attica Prison riot and the Iran Contra scandal.

Old Peter's Russian Tales
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (April, 1989)
Author: Arthur Ransome
Amazon base price: $2.95
Average review score:

Imaginative Tales for Kids
This was the first storybook that was ever read to me. The Book tells the story of an uncle that lives in the chill of Russia during the winter with his nephews. As days go by, he starts telling stories to them ...

These stories, are perfect for children ages 10 and up. They are written pretty much as fables, all of them having some kind of insight as to how people are. No violence is included in the text, though some is meant to be understood, as in Little Red Riding Hood.

Do get this book. Read it out loud to your young and see their reaction.

Swashbuckling children's adventure
This volume in Arthur Ransome's "Swallows and Amazons" series finds the Swallows and Amazons in rare old adventuring form, sailing off to the distant Caribbean (together with grown-ups Captain Flint and the original Old Salt Tar himself, Peter Duck) in search of buried pirate treasure! Along the way, they have to contend with numerous hazards, from sailing in thick fog in the English Channel, to enduring earthquake and tempest, as well as fending off a shipload of villainous pirates intent on getting their hands on the same treasure. If this all sounds rather more daring and far-fetched than can be found in other "Swallows and Amazons" stories, there is good reason for this - although the explanation is not revealed until the next book, "Swallowdale". (This latter was originally published as the second volume of the series but, for obvious reasons, is best left until after you've read "Peter Duck"!)

Despite its somewhat fanciful content, Ransome keeps the tale eminently believable and builds the excitement gradually, drawing the reader inexorably into the events that unfold. You really do just have to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next! By the latter stages, it becomes impossible to put down.

Sprinkled with numerous delightful pen and ink illustrations (charmingly credited to the Swallows and Amazons themselves!) this book is a lovely production. In short, it is nothing short of a little masterpiece that should be on everyone's reading list.

The story of both Peter Stuyvesant and New Amsterdam
From the very start of this juvenile biography for the Colonial Leaders series, Joan Banks makes it clear that Dutch Military Leader Peter Stuyvesant's chief characteristic was stubbornness. Actually, this engaging book is as much about the New Netherlands colony of which "Stubborn Pete" was named governor as it is about the man himself. Stuyvesant, who had lost a leg in a battle, certainly tried to improve the colony in general and the city of New Amsterdam in particular. But Banks also makes it clear that Stuyvesant had his faults; he was quite autocratic and he wanted to ban all other religions besides his own. Banks tells how Stuyvesant protected the colony from Indians and captured New Sweden for the Dutch. In the end, however, he had to surrender to the English and New Amsterdam became New York City. This book is illustrated with historic paintings and drawings, only a few of which actual depict Stuyvesant, as well as some contemporary photographs of both New York and Holland. Peter Stuyvesant is usually mentioned in American History textbooks but this book goes into considerable more detail than what students and teachers would find there. Of course, this book is also of great value to young readers who are researching the early days of what is now New York City.

Wow! A Sensual Feast for the Eyes!
This is a wild book!!!!!!! It is full of very wild art photos of crazy scenes, such as Michel in a bathtub full of feathers, another has him in a loin cloth hanging on a cross after a strange bunch of scenes with a dungeonmaster-looking fellow....it is almost indescribable!...it is ALWAYS a topic of conversation when I bring it out! This book is certainly worth obtaining and keeping. It is sensual art in high form.

Sweet Dreams and Monsters: A Beginner's Guide to Dreams and Nightmares and Things That Go Bump Under the Bed
Published in Paperback by Pan Macmillan (30 July, 1987)
Authors: Peter Mayle and Arthur Robins
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Young children's guide to dreams. Extremely fun!
30 pages. Brilliant illustrations (as is usual from Arthur Robins, the illustrator for Peter Mayle's books).

An extremely fun book for younger children discussing dreams and nightmares, and talking about when/why dreams happen, how sometimes dreams are remembered/forgotten/partially remembered; and the great variety of dreams. A book that provides great reassurance, an incredible amount of humor, and develops understanding and acceptance.

Irish editor boasts about her author's book!
I am the original editor who commissioned Titanic in its first, Irish, edition. I thought it would be interesting to share its origins with you.

As a children's book editor I had always wanted to publish a book on the Titanic as it was a story which fascinated me as a child. When the author, Arthur McKeown, ran some ideas past me for his next project, Titanic was amongst them and I lept at it! Arthur wrote a very good text, telling the story of Titanic, which was built in Belfast, in simple language.

The well-known Irish artist, Peter Hogan, was chosen because he is an avid sailor, one of the first Irishmen to sail around the world, single-handedly, in a Tahiti Ketch he built himself. He was, in fact, about to set sail on another world voyage when he completed the last illustrations for Titanic which are based on original photographs and drawings of the great ship.

Peter Hogan subsequently ship-wrecked in the Mediterranean. He was saved but his beloved boat, the Molly B, was lost. His much publicised shipwreck was surely one of the most dramatic PR stunts ever to sell a book!

Titanic sold very well in Ireland and in the Uk. It was on the bestseller list for months both before and after the film opened.

As an editor, I was proud to have worked on this book and wish it continued success in the US.

I am currently developing other "disaster" titles for a series for this age-range.
