An Excellent Introduction.
The cover alone is worth the price! Each stone in this photograph of 46 specimens of turquoise is identified at the start of the book. High quality natural stones from the most important mines of the Southwest are pictured side by side with treated and plastic versions.

The book is a collection of 10 articles written for New Mexico Magazine. Titles include "Turquoise and the Native American", "Buyer Beware: Hidden Facets of Turquoise", Young Native Jewelers Signal Change of Guard" and "The Plight of Old Pawn". High quality photographs of famous mines, artisans and jewelry, both historic and current, will whet the appetite of would-be collectors but also leave an impression of love and respect for the land and its native inhabitants.

Read this book under a strong light to catch the full depth of color!

The Ballot Box Battle

Beautiful and imaginative pictures.
This story takes place in the late 1800's when Mrs. Stanton-the famous women's rights activist-was still alive. It deals with a young girl, Cordelia, who wants to ride Mrs. Stanton's horse. Mrs. Stanton instead of letting her ride the horse tells her about her childhood experiences. Mrs. Stanton also also makes a great impact on Cordelia when she tries to vote and is not allowed. This in turn inspires Cordelia to stand up for herself.

It is a well-written story that shows what life was like for women before they got to vote. It shows that injustices can be overcome when we put our minds to it and when we don't let what others say get in our way of realizing our dreams. This would be a good story to read to 5th and 6th graders as an introduction to American history in this century.

The pictures are beautiful. They recall images of a by-gone era. It is interesting that men and boys are painted in darker colors, while Cordelia wears lighter colors.

Bobbin Girl - a great way to teach about the Lowell Mills
I am an 8th grade history teacher and I use this book every year when I am teaching about the Lowell Mills and the Industrial Revolution. The students love it and it really helps open up a discussion about the positive and negative effects of the Industrial Revolution

Kids Can Be Trusted
That's all the kids want, but their two grandmas are too busy with their conflicting parenting styles to let them get a word in edgewise. So they finally take things in their own hands and show their grandmas how careful they can be and have fun at the same time. My daughter enjoys the book very much [especially since I use the names she calls her grandmas] and imagines herself having fun with them at the lake. And I always laugh imagining my mother and mother in law trying to watch the kids alone together!

Poignant and beautiful children's tale
I read this book when I was seven, and fourteen years later, I still remember it. This is a lovely children's tale that is (symbolically) about love and the journeys we must make to realize it. Superficially, it's elegant prose, chockful of the little protagonist's charming adventures and marvelous illustrations. Unfortunately, the book is out of print, but if you happen to find it, give it to a child in your life. It's pure magic.

The Story of a second hand child!
Poor Leona! 'Middle Child' is hardly an appropriate title for this feisty young heroine. Leona wants so much to be treated like a 'Grown Up',but having an elder sister like the very distinguished Victoria, with her round lavender plastic frames and her perfect dive, or a little brother like Albert, who flushes his underwear down the lavatory, that isn't easy. So, armed with her lavender purse Leona takes on the world with her face clean from any trace of make-up and her hair full of conditioner. An exceptionally good story for anyone who enjoyed Ramona Quimby or Henry Huggins. A 5 star job without question!

Exciting and captivating book for early readers
This is the first book that my 9-year-old, mildly dyslexic daughter read all the way through without stopping. She was captivated by the problems Lulu Witch faces in starting school and making peace with difficult peers in school. "Why aren't there more Lulu books, Mama?"
