The Best Indian Book You Can Read
I thought this was a very good book. I enjoyed the story because it was breath taking and historical fiction. Even though, not all of the characters were real, this event really took place. This book is about an Indian band who is living peacefully in their valley. But one day, they are made to move out because the white people want to build roads and farms on their land. The Nez Perce tribe is forced to move on a reservation, but instead of going there, they set out on a journey to Canada. Soun, the main character, is an Indian boy who cannot speak because of a shock when he is young. Soun is the main helper. He helps herd the horses. I encourage you to read this book to find out if Soun ever speaks again. It is a history helper and is good to realize what happened back then to real Indian tribes.

5 stars and two thumbs way up!
I thought that this was a very good book, and even though I am 17, it is still a good book to read. I have almost all of his books, which I got a long time ago. I have always enjoyed reading these kinds of books.

great book for all ages
When traviling through the Yellowstone and Teton area a while back as a young boy, i picked up a copy of this book. To make a long stroy short, once i started i could not stop. Not only was the historical lessons grand but it was very moving. I actually cried the first couple of times i read it. now over 10 years later i read it every once in a while. Ken is a fantastic writer, and i recomend all his books. Parents and children should read this book. I read it with my grandmother, and at65+ she loved it too.

If Maya likes it, so do I!!!
I just got this book and love Maya Angelou's introduction of Julianne Malveaux. I'm enjoying these essays, as well. I'm more familiar with Julianne Malveaux as a televison commentator than as a writer, but she seems an equally talented writer as talker! I highly reccomend this book

A must read from one of our best "talking heads".
Julianne Malveaux is one of my favorite talking heads. On CNN, PBS, and MSNBC, she has a feisty "take no prisoners" style of debate. She is unapologetically left and feminist, but she is also quirky, funny, and thought-provoking. This collection of columns is great! She covers lots of economic issues, deals with women and family issues, and also moral issues. My problem with this book is that the essays are too short, and so is the book. I am waiting to read 200 pages in this wonderful woman's voice. Some of my favorite columns: the column where she compares Long Term Capital Management with gamblers; the USA Today column in which she talks about buying her home; a rejoinder to the organizers of the Million Women's March (she is no fan of either the Million Man or Million Woman March, and she explains why); a tribute to Betty Shabazz. This isn't a book you'll read cover to cover. You'll pick it up and put it down, and pick it up again. It is so full of facts, opinions, statistics, and provocation that I expect to be using it as a resource for quite some time.

A treasure
Chester Higgins captures the beauty, strength and courage of the African-American elders he photographs. I am awestruck by the depth he achieves in these portraits. This collection of photos along with tips from the subjects on how to get along in life is truly an inspiring book for anyone interested in viewing a piece of history.

Elder Grace
I had been waiting since May for the release of this book! It is an honor and a privilege to see our elders dipicted with such natural grace & beauty. Chester Higgins is a absolutely centered photographer! He sees with such clarity. He captured everyone's beauty, emotion, prowess & coutenance. I walk around with the book to show it to everyone I encounter, especially the elders & the children. Everyones' first expression is Ahh! The elders start to reminisce, the rest of us can see how we will grow old 'gracefully'!

Ten stars.
Some poets, many poets, are hard to understand, and are downright boring. I have several poets that I love, and Maya is one of them. Black, white, whatever. They should have made us read her in High School. If we had, I would have gotten into poetry much sooner. This book should get 10 stars.

absolutely magnificent
i am 15 and have not yet finished this wonderful book, but i'm loving every minute of it so far. Still I Rise is by far my favorite. I never realized a single poem could hold such inspiration and strength. A book that should be read by everyone of all ages and colors. Many thanks to Maya Angelou for such lovely poems.

Clinton's inaugural poem
ON PULSE OF MORNING is the poem Maya Angelou read at the first inauguration of Bill Clinton as President of the United States of America. This little booklet contains only the one poem for which it is named.

It has often been said that Maya Angelou is a poet of the people and not a poet for writers. I tend to agree with this assessment of her work, and I see nothing wrong with that fact. I think ON THE PULSE OF MORNING is beautiful. Not everyone can be Emily Dickinson.

inspiring and eloquently beautiful

This book is a must for African art and ethnology buffs.
The most striking feature of AFRICAN CANVAS is the close up detail and large pictures of exterior and interior West African mud house design. Some pottery design is also featured. Colors are mostly earth toned because natural pigments are used. A close-up and personal look at this beautiful art form, and a good resource for folks interested in ethnology and in African design.

priceless
I use this book all the time as an artist and a teacher. I wish there were a book for each one of the fantastic artists in the book, but so glad that here is a book about us (Black Women) by us (Black Women). The reproductions are many and excellent. A great introduction to Black Women doing art that get exposure on a more national scale

Listen to this cd
I bought this cd from another store and lost it. I usually don't repurchase cds when I have lost them, but I had to make an exception . . I listen to this album at least once a week or so. It consists of tracks of Angelou reading her poetry, and she reads so beautifully. There are music tracks in between some of the poetry tracks and those work really well. A beautiful way to experience her poems. I'm surprised there aren't tons of reviews on this item! It's a shame if the lack of reviews means that people aren't listening to this.

Excellent inspiration
Interviews with Maya Angelou from the 70's and 80's -- all of them fascinating, and all of them showing her growth as an artist and as an individual over the years. I've been listening to a lot of her work on audio tapes lately, and this historical book of where she's been and what she's had to say about living, writing, politics and more is an excellent addition to absorbing her other words.

In reading Dr. Avenda Hobbs book, Dr. Maya Angelou : As Seen Through the Eyes of America (Honoring a Woman Full of Life) Has really put me almost in Dr. Maya Angelou life. I feel she's the greatest poet of all time. I was very inspired by all the people whom lives she has touched. Including mine. Dr. Hobbs, text put Dr. Angelou closer to my heart. Dr. Angelou has encounter much to be where she is today & is admired by President Clinton, The Honorable Alexis Herman & Bill Cosby and so many more. What got my attention more than anything is the beautiful hardcover that surrounds this delicate book. The colors are such as kente cloth. Vibrate orange and earth tone colors - up close and personal - is Dr. Angelou's face. Humble as ever, a face of concern, but a face of knowledge, power(in her heart). This book is inevitable will go to the top of the charts. Dr. Hobbs, put her mind to work on this piece of art. It was extremely hard to put the book down. Great gifts, even for teenagers. It keeps you in tuned to know how this woman has indeed a big, big, enormous affect on people lives. In three days, I had finished the book it was complete and now it mounts on the bookshelf. Dr. Hobbs brought Dr. Angelou to my home & now I'm bringing it you.
