A Must Read for Fans of Stonehenge and Time Travel
This tale is a must for those of you out there who have always been curious about - and fascinated by - the mystery intimated by the existence of standing stones. Jennifer, an American girl attending school in Scotland, meets up with Robert, a native Scottish boy at the Circle of Arden, a collection of standing stones much like its more famous sibling, Stonehenge. Although they are drawn to this site for very different reasons, the sudden rolling in of a thick mist one grey dawn changes their lives forever. When the mist finally disperses, they find themselves in the future, a world far more "primitive" in some respects than our own, but perhaps more advanced in terms of its values (this you'll have to judge for yourself, but the characters and the issues are well developed and you'll have a lot to think about). The very coastlines have changed and great cities have crumbled to dust. Robert is slightly more prepared for this strange world; he has heard tales in the village of the mists suddenly coming down into the valley, with people mysteriously disappearing every once in a great while. His own mother wandered in among the stones as a small child and was found many hours later, safe, but wrapped in a strange, soft grey cloth. Jennifer is quick-witted and athletic, traits that come in handy when facing the perils of this "brave new world." What must they accomplish there? How are they to return to their own time? The answer to these questions can only be found In the Circle of Time.

A VERY ENTERTAINING BOOK.
Did you ever have one of those days when nothing was going right? If so, read this wonderfully written book by my Great Aunt, Elizabeth Vreeken. Find out what happens to a boy named, Billy, who can't get anything to work out right. Find out what happens when he tries to help his Grandmother with her beloved pet. Will Billy make things right again? This is a great story for young readers. It is a good book for children who are just beginning to read too. The story is well written and easy to understand. I recommend this book to young and old alike.

History of Gitsegukla
An excellent book. during the time these notes were taken, the Canadian Government outlaw these practices. Every single person depicted could have been arrested...I am very glad the UBC decided to print this book simply due to that fact.
For those who are interested, there is a very good time line history of the Gitxsan nation and Gitsegukla, which is situated in the heart of the Gitxsan territory.

Sacre Bleu! An Unexpected Treasure
I just stumbled on this book looking for resources on French culture that went beyond literature, wine and cheese for my students. What a revelation this was! Who knew that Margaret Mead ever wrote anything on France! This is an amazingly perceptive work--still vital and astonishing after 50 years. The astonishing part is that it centers on the structure of the French family, giving a totally different picture of French culture than most Americans ever encounter. As one who has lived with a family in a French village, I found myself continually smiling and nodding in agreement. This book should be read by every student studying French civlization, and everyone contemplating living in that country. I am assigning it to my students, and will give copies as presents this Christmas. Katherine Anderson-Levitt in her introduction puts the entire work in perspective for a contemporary audience, including translations of reviews from French sociologists when the book first came out. This belongs on the bookshelf of every Francophile, and everyone who cares about the anthropology of contemporary societies.

"Trading Places" during the Blitz.
It's the early years of WWII, and the Nazi war machine is about to unleash its fury on England. In order to protect their children from harm, thousands of Londoners are sending their children to the country or, if they can afford it, out of England entirely. Two orphan girls meet in a embarkation area. One girl is from an affluent family and is being sent to Canada; the other, who is from a working class background, is being sent to the country. They are both the same age, look similar to each other, and have no parents. The rich girl decides that she doesn't want to go to Canada, and strikes a deal with the poor girl to switch clothes, destinations, and identities for the duration of the war. Of course, neither of them know that the war will last for six years.

The rich girl assumes the life of her poorer counterpart, and discovers a world very different from that of her own upbringing. The war ends, and she is a completly different person than she was six years earlier. Will she ever be able to go back to her former life of privilege and wealth? And, more poignantly, will the girl who has assumed her identity for six years be willing to give back that life to her and return to the working class?

Memorable
I read this book when I was in grade school. That was about 20 years ago, and the story has stayed with me all this time. Two young girls from different backgrounds trade places during WWII, and the wartime adventures are just the beginning. The real lessons in friendship occur when it comes time to switch back to their original lives.

Searching for Shona is a great funfilled book.
My book is called Searching for Shona, and I loved it. I liked it because it was adventurous, and full of excitement. I would recommend this to anyone who likes books that are packed with action and excitement. This book taught me a lesson about friendship. It taught me that friends would actually change places in life to make themselves happy. I hope that you readers out there choose this book as your number 1 book.

"Breaking the Barriers" breaks the molds
Admittedly, math and science are not my primary fields of interest. However, as a woman and an educator, I was immediately drawn into this book.

The importance of women and minorities in these fields is clearly documented, as are the factors that otherwise dissuade them from participating. Perhaps more importantly, though, the authors outline steps that should be taken to remedy this problem. Guidelines for teachers and administrators, as well as outside program directors, are well organized and easily accessible within the chapters. We learn the best techniques and environments for teaching, as well as names and goals of programs already established to give examples of these theories in practice.

My one problem with the book is that at times, it seemed to stereotype and generalize a bit too much, which is unfortunate, given the tone of advocacy of the book. However, the book is easily forgiven and extremely helpful.

If you're a teacher, this book reminds you that you have a diverse and rich audience, and should teach accordingly. If you're a principal, it reminds you what values to instill in your staff. And if you're a student, it reminds you that you should expect only the best, both from your educators and from yourself, no matter who you are or what you've been told.

Carl Linnaeus: Father of Classification

Swedish Botantist
I enjoyed reading about this Swedish botantist who worked out a system for classifying plants. I didn't realize that Linnaeus was also the one who came up with cultured pearls after watching pearl fishermen open several thousand mussels to find one pearl.

Linnaeus organized huge nature walks on Saturdays with as many as 150 people. He was a very popular lecturer at the university. Those who keep travel journals or nature diaries will find its black coat and white waistcoat, its wrinkled forehead and hooked nose and the effect it gives of wearing spectacles, it looks extremely comical when it walks..."

The last chapter provides activities for the budding botantist (no pun intended) like making a flower press and collecting seeds.

Isaac Newton: The Greatest Scientist of All Time
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1901)
Author: Margaret J. Anderson
Amazon base price: $19.55
Average review score:

A Giant on the Shoulders of Giants
This non-fiction book is interestingly written with details from Newton's childhood and adult life. He said, "If I have seen further than most men, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." The author spends much of the first chapter discussing how the writings of these giants, Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Descartes, influenced Newton.

Boys who are into building models will delight in the model of a windmill that young was powered by a treadmill run by a mouse. He used his model-building experience later in life when he built a reflecting telescope.

The final chapter contains a few experiments for the budding young scientist. Upper elementary aged students will be inspired by Newton's dedication to science and mathematics.
