Gasdynamic Lasers: An Introduction
Published in Textbook Binding by Academic Press (June, 1976)
Author: John David Anderson

Average review score:

A fascinating and easily-read introduction to the GDL
"Gasdynamic Lasers: an Introduction" by John Anderson is truly a seminal work in the field, and is very easy to read. The mechanisms, peripherals, and priciples of the device are explained in plain language with just the right amount of mathematics, to excite the reader enough about this wonderful device, to want to get some hands-on, and/or dive into somewhat more parametrically intense volumes such as the excellent "Gasdynamic Laser" by S. A. Losev. Numerous graphs, drawings, and photographs of experimental GDLs mesmerize the reader, showing how the devices are actually constructed and operated. Combustion methods such as burners and arc tunnels are described. Fuel mixtures are discussed, as are the resulting exhaust gas content which is the active medium in this case. Internal topography such as supersonic nozzles which are used to freeze the vibrational states of the active medium in preparation for energy extraction are shown. Anderson even tells you how to get the spent gas out of the way. The book "talks to the reader" in a friendly and inviting way. This one really made me want to go out and pick up some pipe and sheetmetal... A great read, and about as close to a set of plans as I have ever seen!

A cross-section of wartime opinions and experiences.
A dozen biographies of those opposed to or affected by Vietnam serve as the foundation for revealing how individuals were influenced by events of the times. Human Tradition in the Vietnam Era goes beyond most Vietnam books to provide a cross-section of opinions and experiences documenting the lasting effects of the war.

Difficult Subject Handled Beautifully
The subject of death is a difficult one to explain to childrenand send a positive, yet real message. Death happens, and"sometimes there isn't a single reaons in the world for something to happen." It is okay to grieve and talking about it can sometimes be the best way to work through a loss. The writer clearly portrays a boy struggling to understand the loss of his dog, and meeting up with his neighbor-- an older man who's wife died previously. The older man understands the boy's frustration and grief, and empathizes with the boy's feelings word for word. As the boy describes his life with the dog, the man remembers his life with his "best friend" (his wife.)

The book does not specifically address where people go after they die, except to clearly state that they are in a better place, happy, able to run and see, etc. (I would hope that people from any religion would be able to interpret this to be whatever they wanted.) And, the man teaches the boy how to be with his dog whenever he wants, by just closing his eyes and imagining... Really beautiful!

This subject matter is difficult, but I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered a loss. I think this will help children understand their feelings and know they are not alone in losing someone. Very well done!

A fun read -- and useful information, too
There's something most of us find fascinating about the lineages of persons of note, whether they're royalty, U.S. presidents, movie stars, military leaders, or literary and historical figures like Pocahontas and Louisa May Alcott. The Virginia ancestry of the Queen Mother is relatively well known, as are the New England cousins of the late Princess of Wales and the Duchess of York -- but did you know Elvis Presley, Jimmy Carter, and Jesse Helms are all collaterally related? Roberts is probably the leading expert at this sort of thing, especially when it comes to uncovering surprising connections, like the British royal descent of Karl Marx's wife (whose grandmother was Scottish), and he carefully lays out examples of what might be called "genealogical evolution," demonstating that genealogy really is inclusive, not exclusive. Many British, European, and American contemporaries are much more closely related than we often realize. There are also a number of descents contributed by guest columnists which maintain the same high standard of documentation.

I was expecting something different.
When I opened my package of hundreds of dollars of book I bought from Amazon the other day, I noticed that this book looked liked a children's book. I was a little disapointed because I wanted it to be a book for ME!

I got over it.

The story and the art were beautiful. I will save it for my little kids and give it to them when they are older so they can appreciate an African creation myth when they can understand it.

The Paleoindian and Early Archaic Southeast
Very useful collection of papers and summaries of papers on paleo and early archaic Americans in this region. The thought provoking theories on settlement and hunting practices that evolved along with the changing climate make this well worth reading. I keep my copy handy and refer back to it often.

An Awesome Tool for Ministry
In this book, David Hesselgrave presents church planting in a practical way. I am so thankful for the influence this book has had even in my own church planting adventure. He discusses the necessary tools that every church planter, and or Ministry worker needs to be:

1. Relevant 2. Possess an anointed message 3. Practical in a world that is continually changing,

I highly recommend this book as a tool for ministry, and a great book for informatory purposes for any library...

Blessings, Rev. Rick Metzgar, Jr.
